Rachel Dratch on Good Hang with Amy Poehler

The Hang, in Short

Before Amy even talks to Rachel Dratch, she checks in with Kevin Cahoon, who's dealing with a wild feral hog situation at his mom's place in rural Texas. Thirty hogs at a time, tearing up property, setting off alarms in the middle of the night. This is the kind of chaos that kicks off a 30-year friendship celebration. Kevin, who met Rachel doing the musical Minsky's in LA (a show that closed out of town, exactly as Rachel's psychic predicted), gushes about what a steadfast friend she's been. He saw her get a Tony nomination for her Broadway debut in Pussy, watched her crush it at Shakespeare in the Park, and wants Amy to ask about little theater camp Rachel's biggest inspirations. Also: what pulls Debbie Downer out of her doom spiral? The feline AIDS won't cure itself.

    >> Hi., I, feel, so, lucky.

  44. 1:53

    >> I, feel, so, lucky.

  45. 1:55

    >> I'm, the, luckiest.

  46. 1:57

I get to see you on this Tuesday.

  47. 2:00

    >> I, know., I, wish, we, were, having, margaritas

  48. 2:02

    with Dra.

  49. 2:04

    >> Hey,, listen., Wouldn't, that, be, great?

  50. 2:06

That's a good hang right there.

  51. 2:08

    >> That, is, for, listeners., Um, I've, had, a, few

  52. 2:11

margaritas with Kevin and Dra over the

  53. 2:13

years, pre-show, postshow, cuz both of

  54. 2:16

you were on Broadway. Well, listen.

  55. 2:19

Anytime I can hang out with you

  56. 2:21

    >> how, are, you?

  57. 2:22

    >> I'm, so, great., How, are, you?

  58. 2:24

    >> Where, are, we, talking, to, you, from?

  59. 2:27

    >> I, am, in, Texas, at, my, mom's, place,, rural

  60. 2:30

Texas, outside of Houston. It's a sunny

  61. 2:33

day. We've had four days of torrential

  62. 2:35

rain. Um, and I'm dealing with these

  63. 2:37

wild hogs. I know this is crazy, but

  64. 2:40

they're wild feral hogs that show up in

  65. 2:42

the middle of the night and they tear up

  66. 2:44

your property. They travel in packs of

  67. 2:46

    30. And I've set up alarms all around

  68. 2:49

and I think they're working. But last

  69. 2:52

night we had a few come and um the

  70. 2:54

alarms went off in the middle of the

  71. 2:55

    night which there's nothing more

  72. 2:57

terrifying. Um and I'm good with animals

  73. 2:59

and I grew up with a lot of animals and

  74. 3:01

I'm fine with animals. Not these

  75. 3:03

    animals.

  76. 3:04

    >> Not, a, fan.

  77. 3:05

    >> It's, worth, a, Google, if, anyone, wants, to

  78. 3:07

    Google Texas wild feral hogs.

  79. 3:13

Well, I mean the the the thing that I'm

  80. 3:16

was so excited to talk to you about

  81. 3:18

today is that you um like many of us

  82. 3:23

    deeply love our guest Rachel

  83. 3:26

    >> Beyond.

  84. 3:27

    >> Tell, me, tell, me, how, you, two, first, met.

  85. 3:29

    >> We, met, doing, a, musical, called, Minsky's

  86. 3:32

in LA written by Charles Strauss and

  87. 3:35

Susan Birkinhead and Bob Martin. It was

  88. 3:38

coming to Broadway, a star-studded cast

  89. 3:41

and it closed in LA, which is, you know

  90. 3:44

the the great showbiz tale. But what you

  91. 3:47

take away from experiences like that are

  92. 3:49

the people, and you usually have one or

  93. 3:51

two from each show. And um I fell in

  94. 3:55

love with RA immediately. What's not to

  95. 3:57

fall in love with? Um and she had told

  96. 4:02

me she had gone to a psychic that I

  97. 4:04

think you had bought her this psychic

  98. 4:05

reading for her birthday. That's right.

  99. 4:07

I should talk to her about that because

  100. 4:08

if she's open to it because her and I

  101. 4:10

both went to the same psychic at the

  102. 4:12

same time when we were both pregnant.

  103. 4:14

    >> Yes,, that's, right., And, she, had, gone, to

  104. 4:16

we had before the show we would go I

  105. 4:18

would go to her dressing room and we

  106. 4:19

would have a day catch up. What'd you do

  107. 4:21

today? Who'd you see? Where'd you lunch?

  108. 4:23

Um and she had said I went to this

  109. 4:25

psychic and the psychic told me that our

  110. 4:26

show was going to close out of town. And

  111. 4:28

we were like they're crazy. That'll

  112. 4:31

never happen. We're moving into the St.

  113. 4:34

James Theater. Well, the psychic was

  114. 4:36

right. But anyway, it that was probably

  115. 4:39

15, 16, 17 years ago, and it has just

  116. 4:42

    been the most nourishing, fulfilling

  117. 4:45

    steadfast

  118. 4:47

friendship that I could have ever, ever

  119. 4:49

imagined. And then I've gotten to have

  120. 4:51

new friends like you that I have met

  121. 4:54

through RA. And you know that they're a

  122. 4:56

good friend when you meet their friends

  123. 4:57

and those friends become your friends as

  124. 4:59

well. So, it um it's just been the most

  125. 5:03

rewarding friendship I could have ever

  126. 5:04

    imagined.

  127. 5:05

    >> I, hear, you., I, feel, the, same., I, feel, like

  128. 5:08

    there's a few friends that and it's

  129. 5:11

proven to be true now that Rachel and I

  130. 5:12

have been friends for almost 30 years.

  131. 5:15

There's a few people that, you know, in

  132. 5:18

in success and in quote failure, in good

  133. 5:23

times and in bad times, they're going to

  134. 5:25

weather that storm with you. And that's

  135. 5:26

not always the case with everyone.

  136. 5:28

Sometimes people are better when things

  137. 5:30

are going badly, right? They're like

  138. 5:32

they like that. And sometimes people

  139. 5:34

want to hear when you're succeeding.

  140. 5:36

That's what they when they want to be

  141. 5:38

along for the ride. But Rachel Drach

  142. 5:41

definitely is there for both if you're

  143. 5:43

lucky enough to have her as your friend.

  144. 5:44

    >> That, is, so, true., And, she's, a, wonderful

  145. 5:47

giftgiver. She never forgets an occasion

  146. 5:50

where she's going to bring you a little

  147. 5:51

something. You know, I did a Broadway

  148. 5:53

show that ran nine months and she was

  149. 5:57

there opening night, she was there

  150. 5:58

closing night, she was there in between.

  151. 6:01

She came again, she brought friends.

  152. 6:04

It's just she is a cheerleader for those

  153. 6:07

that she loves. She is a champion. Um

  154. 6:10

she'll go to bat. She's just life is a

  155. 6:14

little brighter when Ra is around.

  156. 6:17

    >> Cocoon,, let's, talk, about, Shucked,, which

  157. 6:20

is the show you're talking about. That's

  158. 6:22

    true. Yes.

  159. 6:23

    >> I, loved, you, in, it, and, loved, that, show, so

  160. 6:26

    much.

  161. 6:27

    >> You, were, so, dear, to, come., So,, it, meant

  162. 6:30

the world to me. And let me tell you

  163. 6:32

what, Amy Polar, you're one of those

  164. 6:35

friends because not only did you come to

  165. 6:36

Shuck, I did a production of Lasha Fall

  166. 6:39

in the fall. You came to Lasha.

  167. 6:42

    >> You, are, there., I, mean,, you're,, you, know,

  168. 6:46

you birds of a feather fly together. You

  169. 6:48

    guys are just exemplary friends.

  170. 6:52

    >> Oh,, friend., Thank, you, for, saying, that.

  171. 6:53

That means a lot. And I love I mean

  172. 6:55

it's not hard work to go to a really fun

  173. 6:57

show and watch you. Before we get to

  174. 7:00

your question, I do want to I'm going to

  175. 7:02

talk to Drach a little bit about her her

  176. 7:04

Tony nom and her show PUS and how I mean

  177. 7:07

because I know from being her friend

  178. 7:10

how how positive an experience that was

  179. 7:13

for her like great women that she became

  180. 7:16

really good friends with. a Tony nom a

  181. 7:18

hilarious part. Um, do you remember that

  182. 7:21

time and what she said about that

  183. 7:23

experience when she was working on that

  184. 7:25

    show?

  185. 7:25

    >> Well,, here's, the, incredible, thing, and

  186. 7:27

it's so rare. She got a Tony nomination

  187. 7:30

    for her Broadway debut.

  188. 7:33

    >> Damn.

  189. 7:34

    >> Ever, happens., That, is, like, remarkable.

  190. 7:38

And I've seen Rachel on stage so many

  191. 7:42

times at the public, Shakespeare in the

  192. 7:43

    Park, Manhattan Theater Club.

  193. 7:46

She is always the standout. And when you

  194. 7:50

do a Broadway show, whether you want to

  195. 7:52

admit it or not, there's always a part

  196. 7:54

of you that thinks maybe, just maybe

  197. 7:57

that childhood dream would come true.

  198. 7:59

That show that I watch once a year in

  199. 8:02

June, maybe I could be a part of that

  200. 8:04

show. And then when it happens, it is

  201. 8:07

just it's the most uh it's the biggest

  202. 8:11

embrace you could ever imagine from a

  203. 8:13

community that you've always wanted to

  204. 8:14

    be a part of.

  205. 8:15

And you know, a lot of people probably

  206. 8:19

um know Rachel from television and from

  207. 8:22

film, but her theater career is just as

  208. 8:26

sparkling and just as dynamic and

  209. 8:28

diverse as um her impact on TV and film.

  210. 8:33

    >> Yeah,, she's, played, so, many, different

  211. 8:35

types of characters. It's actually a

  212. 8:36

good question. She's played like men and

  213. 8:38

dogs and people and like mothers and

  214. 8:42

robots and whatever. She will. She can

  215. 8:44

    do it all.

  216. 8:46

    >> She, can, do, everything., That's, why, you

  217. 8:47

    hire Rachel D, you know.

  218. 8:49

    >> It's, so, true.

  219. 8:50

    >> It's, so, true., Um,, we, should, all, be, as

  220. 8:53

versatile as Rachel D, you know.

  221. 8:56

    >> Okay,, so, Kev,, what, do, you, think?, I, mean,

  222. 8:58

I could talk to Drach and we'll probably

  223. 9:00

today forever about so many things, the

  224. 9:02

past, the present, the future. Anything

  225. 9:04

you think I should ask her today?

  226. 9:06

    >> Yes., Um,, it, was, hard, to, pick, one

  227. 9:08

question. I have two that I think are uh

  228. 9:12

sparkly. One is about the theater

  229. 9:15

because I feel like a lot of people

  230. 9:17

don't realize that Rachel Drach was a

  231. 9:20

theater kid and she went to theater camp

  232. 9:22

and her dream and ambition was to be in

  233. 9:24

plays and in musicals and then her

  234. 9:27

career took a brilliant detour. Um, I

  235. 9:31

would ask her, little Rachel Drash going

  236. 9:34

to theater camp, what were her three

  237. 9:38

beacons of light in the American

  238. 9:40

theater? A musical, a performer. Who was

  239. 9:42

it that filled her with I want to do

  240. 9:47

that. That's what I want to be when I

  241. 9:49

    grow up.

  242. 9:50

    >> Such, a, good, question.

  243. 9:51

    >> That, was, the, one, question., And, then, this

  244. 9:54

is something that inspires me about

  245. 9:56

    Rachel.

  246. 9:58

She brought us all Debbie Downer, one of

  247. 10:00

    the most iconic American comedic

  248. 10:03

    characters.

  249. 10:06

When Rachel Dret is thinking about

  250. 10:09

feline AIDS and North Korean train

  251. 10:12

    accidents and insurrection

  252. 10:15

what is that catalyst that gets her out

  253. 10:19

of her doom and gloom and brings her

  254. 10:22

back to reality? That would be another

  255. 10:24

question. Debbie would want me to point

  256. 10:26

out that it is good that you brought up

  257. 10:27

feline AIDS because it is the number one

  258. 10:29

    killer of domestic cats.

  259. 10:30

    >> Well,, that's, true., Listen,, we've, talked

  260. 10:32

about feral hogs and feline AIDS. What's

  261. 10:34

    next baby?

  262. 10:36

    >> Texas,, baby., Um,, these, are, such, good

  263. 10:40

questions, Kevin. And she I don't think

  264. 10:41

she knows that I'm talking to you today.

  265. 10:43

    >> I, did, not, tell, her.

  266. 10:44

    >> Okay,, good., I, didn't, tell, her.

  267. 10:45

    >> We, had, a, little, We, had, a, little, Kiki

  268. 10:47

yesterday and I was zipped lipped. So

  269. 10:50

    >> oh, my, god,, I'm, so, happy, because, she's

  270. 10:51

going to be so happy. These are really

  271. 10:53

    good questions. And

  272. 10:56

I think nobody loves a a good question

  273. 10:59

more than Dr. Like if you ask Dra a good

  274. 11:02

    question, she's like, "That's such a

  275. 11:03

    good question."

  276. 11:05

    >> She, will, say, that., I, guarantee, you

  277. 11:07

    that's

  278. 11:08

    >> and, I, had, told, Blake, Lee, who, was, on

  279. 11:10

who's a dear mutual friend of ours who

  280. 11:12

was on for um I told him not five days

  281. 11:17

ago, Amy, I was like, "You were so

  282. 11:18

incredible on Amy's podcast. It's so

  283. 11:21

fabulous that you were on there. It is

  284. 11:23

so chic. What a cool thing. I'm so proud

  285. 11:25

of you. And then my phone dinged and it

  286. 11:28

    was you and

  287. 11:31

    >> it, just, I, can't, thank, you, enough.

  288. 11:33

    >> Are, you, kidding, me?

  289. 11:36

    >> Thank, you, for, taking, a, break, from

  290. 11:38

    fighting the hogs and

  291. 11:40

together was so special to me. It was

  294. 11:47

and I cher it every single minute.

  295. 11:51

    >> All right,, I, can't, wait, to, see, you, in

  296. 11:52

    New York, friend.

  297. 11:53

    >> I, love, you, so, much.

  298. 11:55

    >> Thanks, so, much, for, doing, this.

    >> Rachel, Dra, is, here.

  314. 12:36

    >> Are, we, starting?, Is, it, official?

  315. 12:37

    >> Yeah., And, we, need, to, talk, about, Wait,

  316. 12:40

    what?

  317. 12:40

    >> I, want, to, do, a, podcast., I, just, need

  318. 12:42

    >> What, do, you, got?, What, I, have, all, done?

  319. 12:47

Let's get started here. I'll get this

  320. 12:51

    pulling out the world famous.

  321. 12:55

    >> You've, seen, it., You've, seen, them, before.

  322. 12:58

    >> This, is, my, new, trademark,, everybody.

  323. 13:00

    >> Smithsonian.

  324. 13:02

    The Smithsonian.

  325. 13:05

    >> Academy, of, TV.

  326. 13:06

    >> This, is, my, By, the, way,, I, didn't, I, didn't

  327. 13:08

tangle this. This is how it came out

  328. 13:11

where I was storing it. This is the

  329. 13:12

    >> These, are, the, world.

  330. 13:13

    >> This, is, in, their, natural, state., World

  331. 13:15

famous Rachel DR headphones. They shot

  332. 13:18

fired her around the world. These

  333. 13:20

headphones is where it all began.

  334. 13:23

    >> The, chaos

  335. 13:25

    beginning.

  336. 13:25

    >> Oh, man., Now,

  337. 13:27

    >> now, that, I'm, with, Amy,, everything's, all

  338. 13:30

    right.

  339. 13:30

    >> Okay,, we, don't, even, use, these,, but, I, had

  340. 13:32

    to bring those.

  341. 13:33

    >> Dra, historical, item., Okay.

  342. 13:35

    >> Of, course,, Dash, brings, a, prop.

  343. 13:39

    >> Brings, the, prop, from, home.

  344. 13:42

For people that didn't see our first

  345. 13:44

episode of Good Hang Dra was in the

  346. 13:47

group that was talking about our guest

  347. 13:48

Tina Fay and boy did we have a good

  348. 13:51

    laugh.

  349. 13:51

    >> Oh, my, god,, that, was, like, probably, my

  350. 13:53

    biggest laugh of the year.

  351. 13:54

    >> I, just, watched, it, again, on, the, way, over

  352. 13:56

here and um we're going to get into it

  353. 13:58

    today that

  354. 13:58

    >> of, course, we, are., People, need, to, hear

  355. 14:01

    the behind the music.

  356. 14:04

    Where were you?

  357. 14:05

    >> Where, were, you, when, you, saw, the, clip?

  358. 14:08

    >> I, mean, I, owe, you, money, for, that, clip., I

  359. 14:10

owe you money for that clip. But it

  360. 14:12

really was like it started off the

  361. 14:14

entire vibe of this show. Like I'm so

  362. 14:16

grateful for it cuz it started off

  363. 14:18

exactly what I was hoping which is I was

  364. 14:20

hoping that this would be like fun and

  365. 14:22

easy and a laugh and that was the

  366. 14:25

    deepest laugh.

  367. 14:27

It was such a good laugh.

  368. 14:29

    >> Like, I, mean, imagine, like, your, best, laugh

  369. 14:32

ever and then it's and then it's like

  370. 14:34

recorded for you to watch again. like

  371. 14:36

that that never happens because you

  372. 14:38

    can't plan that.

  373. 14:40

    >> No., No., And, also, having, Fred, and, Seth

  374. 14:43

and Zarna there and there's really no

  375. 14:45

better I would say like partner than

  376. 14:48

Seth when Drach is draing because he's

  377. 14:52

so good at keeping like like things

  378. 14:55

moving in a way or something like

  379. 14:57

    >> he, was, making, me, laugh, so, much, so, hard

  380. 14:59

    >> when, he's, like, Dret., We're, probably

  381. 15:00

going to cut all this out. And then when

  382. 15:03

I was like, I'm holding everything up

  383. 15:05

and he's like, no, this is how she

  384. 15:06

    wanted to start. Like

  385. 15:09

    he was the perfect foil

  386. 15:12

    the comedy foil.

  387. 15:13

    >> Also,, the, thing, that, gets, me,, which, is

  388. 15:14

such a like improv and such a good

  389. 15:17

example of what a good listener you are

  390. 15:18

is that at the very end you clap, which

  391. 15:22

is what we asked you to do 15 minutes

  392. 15:24

before to get started. God, that clap.

  393. 15:26

    >> End, it, with, the, beginning,, people.

  394. 15:29

    Let's just

  395. 15:30

    >> Comedy, 101.

  396. 15:32

    Okay.

  397. 15:33

    >> Second, prop, use, of, this, podcast, is

  398. 15:36

stretch is swirling her ice drink.

  399. 15:39

    >> Okay.

  400. 15:41

No, but it is like that I I have to say

  401. 15:44

when I was thinking about what to talk

  402. 15:45

about today, I was like we have had

  403. 15:48

    deep laughs.

  404. 15:49

    >> We, have.

  405. 15:50

    >> It's, like, the, heart, and, you, love, you

  406. 15:52

love to laugh and the way Dr. Dash has

  407. 15:54

    many kinds of laughs

  408. 15:57

and you have like I I know people have

  409. 16:00

done your laugh to you. Oh yeah. You go.

  410. 16:04

    >> Also,, when, you, go, into, like, a, level, two

  411. 16:06

laugh, when you're going down deep, you

  412. 16:08

    go

  413. 16:11

like you get very old school.

  414. 16:14

    >> Oh, my, gosh.

  415. 16:15

    >> Wait,, I, just, need, to, say, though, that

  416. 16:17

when that was happening that I didn't

  417. 16:20

know that was going to be used for on

  418. 16:22

    camera,

  419. 16:23

    >> which, I, didn't, tell, you.

  420. 16:25

    >> You, did, not, tell, me., I, looked, back, at

  421. 16:28

    the text and

  422. 16:29

    >> I'm, very, sorry., No,, no., I, don't, mean

  423. 16:31

that. I mean it was the best thing ever.

  424. 16:32

But I just mean for people wondering

  425. 16:34

like why'd she order food right when I

  426. 16:36

was there was my podcast like we could

  427. 16:39

argue still with audio. Why did you

  428. 16:41

    >> Well,, cuz, I, thought, it, was, like, a, half

  429. 16:43

    hour of time.

  430. 16:45

    >> True.

  431. 16:45

    >> And, then, it, came, very, quickly

  432. 16:48

    >> and, then, my, dog, barked

  433. 16:50

    >> and, then, and, your, dog's, name, and, then, my

  434. 16:52

    dog's name is Ruffles

  435. 16:54

    >> and, Ruffles, started, barking., Anyway,

  436. 16:56

    sorry. Go ahead.

  437. 16:57

    >> Do, you, remember, I, think, we, talked, about

  438. 16:59

it. There was a hilarious whoever is the

  439. 17:01

Tik Tocker who did this. Somebody

  440. 17:02

posted. There were many clips of it and

  441. 17:04

then someone went and looked at your

  442. 17:05

    chart.

  443. 17:06

    >> Yes., My, my, horoscope., Whatever., Zodiac.

  444. 17:09

    Well, so I'm What's a Pisces? I I didn't

  445. 17:12

know this word. Stellium means all your

  446. 17:15

things are in the same sign like every

  447. 17:16

single thing. But I guess there's one

  448. 17:18

little thing. But this woman, she did my

  449. 17:20

chart on TikTok and she was laughing

  450. 17:22

really hard. She's like, "How is this

  451. 17:24

    woman surviving with everything in

  452. 17:26

Pisces?" She like she's she's somehow

  453. 17:28

she's making it work. But then I guess

  454. 17:30

there's like one thing in Capricorn. She

  455. 17:32

goes this Capricorn is holding the whole

  456. 17:34

rest of it all together. It's doing the

  457. 17:36

work of you know 10,000 men or

  458. 17:38

    something. And that kind of

  459. 17:40

    >> Pisces, final, boss.

  460. 17:42

    >> Yes., And, I, have, wondered, if, I, other

  461. 17:44

people were talking about a ADHD I guess

  462. 17:47

and I have wondered if I have that as an

  463. 17:49

    adult. I don't know.

  464. 17:51

    >> But, that, if, you, look, at, that, clip, you're

  465. 17:52

going to be like yep. I feel like it's

  466. 17:54

like pis I mean we we talk about it like

  467. 17:56

in you know the Pisces being a

  468. 17:58

    shortorthhand for

  469. 18:01

    >> like, you, know, it's, in, its, best

  470. 18:03

    >> chaos

  471. 18:05

    I'm saying that's what I'm saying but

  472. 18:08

    we're opposite

  473. 18:10

    signs

  474. 18:10

    >> Amy's, Virgo, by, the, way, I, don't, know, much

  475. 18:12

about signs but I just know about this I

  476. 18:14

    just know about this

  477. 18:14

    >> I, don't, know, I, I, do, like, astrology, I

  478. 18:16

think it's cool we like astrology we

  479. 18:17

like an enagram we like anything that

  480. 18:19

like is about personality stuff but

  481. 18:22

    what's fun about talking about

  482. 18:23

    >> Pisces, in, Virgo, is, Pisces, are, kind, of

  483. 18:25

the fish that are floating through life

  484. 18:27

and Virgo is the virgin setting the

  485. 18:31

rules. I don't know. And um but I find

  486. 18:34

like we do do I mean I I I feel like you

  487. 18:37

do definitely have a dreamlike approach

  488. 18:41

and a adventurous approach to life.

  489. 18:43

    >> I, would, say, that., Yes.

  490. 18:45

    >> Yes., I, think, you, are, like, a, curious

  491. 18:48

    traveler

  492. 18:49

    >> and, and, you, definitely, don't, um

  493. 18:52

    >> feel, shy.

  494. 18:53

    >> Shy

  495. 18:55

    shy.

  496. 18:55

    >> She, got, shy.

  497. 18:59

    >> Did, you, see, what, happened?, The, curious

  498. 19:01

    traveler.

  499. 19:07

    >> I'm, trying, to, be, myself.

  500. 19:08

    >> I, can't, see., Dash, just, It, was, like, a

  501. 19:10

cloud. A shy cloud came over.

  502. 19:12

    >> But, you, are, kind, of, shy.

  503. 19:13

    >> I, am, shy., Yes., It, goes, without, saying,

  504. 19:15

we've been friends for 30 years. We are

  505. 19:17

often mistaken for being the same person

  506. 19:19

or like just the other day someone we

  507. 19:21

were in the a public bathroom and

  508. 19:22

someone was like "I saw your sister in

  509. 19:23

the bathroom." Like they think we're

  510. 19:25

    sisters.

  511. 19:26

    >> But, you, and, I, did, do, definitely, have

  512. 19:28

like if if life was like a romcom like

  513. 19:30

we would be like growing up next to each

  514. 19:32

    other.

  515. 19:33

    >> So

  516. 19:34

    >> walking, by, each, other, in, the, mall

  517. 19:35

    probably.

  518. 19:36

    >> So, talk, to, people, who, don't, know, your

  519. 19:38

like early Drach. Where did she grow up?

  520. 19:40

    What was her life?

  521. 19:41

    >> Early, Dr., uh, grew, up, in, Lexon,

  522. 19:43

Massachusetts, next town over from Amy

  523. 19:45

but we didn't know each other. Although

  524. 19:47

if well we did work in the same ice

  525. 19:48

cream store, which we always have to say

  526. 19:51

called Chadwick. And if you don't know

  527. 19:53

that, you've been living under a rock.

  528. 19:55

But anyway, um but yeah, grew up in

  529. 19:57

Lexon and uh I don't know. I was I was

  530. 20:00

shy when I was little, but I was always

  531. 20:02

I mean I watched SNL when I was in third

  532. 20:05

grade at someone else's house at a

  533. 20:06

sleepover like their older brother was

  534. 20:08

watching it and I was immediately like

  535. 20:09

what is this? But I definitely was I

  536. 20:11

mean I don't know about you either. I

  537. 20:12

    don't I wasn't like I'm gonna be an

  538. 20:14

actor when I grow at all. Like it was

  539. 20:16

    just for fun.

  540. 20:17

    >> I, didn't, knew, that, was, a, job, really.

  541. 20:18

    Yeah.

  542. 20:19

    >> It, was, sort, of, like, maybe, a, little, dream

  543. 20:20

with like when I saw Annie, you know

  544. 20:23

the musical. I'm like how are they up

  545. 20:25

there? Where where do I get one of those

  546. 20:27

    buckets? You know, like

  547. 20:28

    >> Annie, Annie, is, there, should, be, a

  548. 20:30

documentary about women our age and how

  549. 20:33

    we were affected by Annie.

  550. 20:34

    >> Yeah., So,, um,, but, yeah,, and, then, I, did

  551. 20:37

school plays, but I definitely was not

  552. 20:39

like the queen of the drama club, you

  553. 20:41

know? I just did it for fun.

  554. 20:43

    >> You, did, get, a, superlative,, though,, and

  555. 20:44

    it was

  556. 20:45

    >> I, did, I, got, class, clown.

  557. 20:47

    >> Did, you, get, class, or, did, you, guys, do

  558. 20:49

    those two?

  559. 20:49

    >> We, had, class, clown,, but, I, didn't, get, it.

  560. 20:51

    >> What?, I'd, like, to, know, who, did

  561. 20:53

    >> I, I, was, the, second, runner, up, for, most

  562. 20:56

    casual.

  563. 20:57

    >> You, don't, know, this.

  564. 20:58

    >> I, thought, I, most, casual., It's, like,, what

  565. 21:00

    did that even mean?

  566. 21:01

    >> I, don't, know if, it's, in, manner, or, dress,

  567. 21:03

but didn't even get close. up super

  568. 21:05

    >> kind, of, casual

  569. 21:06

    >> class, clown, but, um, then, let's, see, I

  570. 21:10

    don't know I then

  571. 21:12

    >> uh, oh, and, then, also, well, my, dad, was, very

  572. 21:15

funny as you know Paul D

  573. 21:17

    >> Paul, D, um, and, uh, so, we, just, kind, of, had

  574. 21:21

like you know he would do like kind of

  575. 21:23

oh this is funny I I ran into someone um

  576. 21:26

whose dad had gone to high school with

  577. 21:27

my dad back when I was in high school

  578. 21:29

you know we were at the house and then

  579. 21:31

she said oh my dad said your dad used to

  580. 21:34

always do impressions of the teachers

  581. 21:35

when they left the room and have

  582. 21:37

everyone laughing cuz he was doing Yeah.

  583. 21:39

So like I I just sort of had that it was

  584. 21:42

in my blood. No, but I mean it was sort

  585. 21:43

of like in the atmosphere. And then

  586. 21:46

    >> but, you, did, school, plays., I, mean, getting

  587. 21:48

class clown you got to be funny in real

  588. 21:52

    >> I, guess, like, in, junior, high, I, started, to

  589. 21:54

kind of like pipe up oneliners from the

  590. 21:56

back of the room kind of thing. But um

  591. 21:59

much to the chagrin of teachers I'm

  592. 22:01

sure. But um but then when I got to

  593. 22:03

college then there was an improv group

  594. 22:05

there and then I was cut like I didn't

  595. 22:07

even know what improv was back then. Now

  596. 22:09

    it's like

  597. 22:09

    >> when, when, you, go, to, So, you're, in, high

  598. 22:11

    school in Lexington, Massachusetts which

  599. 22:13

a shot heard around the world like we

  600. 22:15

just mentioned. Um uh like the the

  601. 22:18

birthplace of democracy. Um right next

  602. 22:21

    to it was Burlington, Massachusetts

  603. 22:23

where I was from. And let's be honest

  604. 22:24

they were not different at all. There

  605. 22:26

was maybe Right. Oh my god. Look at She

  606. 22:28

just blast time. She said it. Well, I

  607. 22:31

was, gonna, say, I, exaggerated, for, a fact.

  608. 22:34

    >> Okay., Okay.

  609. 22:34

    >> I, exaggerated, for, shared, them, all.

  610. 22:37

    >> We, shared, them, all.

  611. 22:38

    >> Well,, we, I, often, hung, out, at, the

  612. 22:39

Burlington Mall. We probably passed each

  613. 22:41

    other.

  614. 22:41

    >> We, did., I, think, we, did

  615. 22:43

    >> at, the, Bighgams, or, something.

  616. 22:44

    >> Like, we, definitely, I, felt, like, we, had

  617. 22:46

    very parallel lives, like short

  618. 22:48

    blue-eyed Massachusetts girls who um

  619. 22:51

like were good students but wanted to be

  620. 22:54

funny. And um and the the Lexington I

  621. 22:59

always used to joke that Lexington is

  622. 23:01

like for Parks and Rex fan like Parks

  623. 23:03

and Rec fans Lexington was the Eagleton

  624. 23:05

and Burlington was the Ponty is how it

  625. 23:07

felt like we thought Lexington was where

  626. 23:09

the rich people were. And what did you

  627. 23:11

    think of Burlington?

  628. 23:12

    >> Burlington., Oh,, I, didn't, think, about, No,

  629. 23:14

    I'm just kidding.

  630. 23:16

I'm like, how do I how do I get Amy to

  631. 23:19

see? Um no, first of all, I worked at

  632. 23:22

    Cowdors. Yes.

  633. 23:23

    >> Which, is, in, across, the, Burlington., I

  634. 23:24

crossed town lines during Cowdors with

  635. 23:27

the Burlington Bad Girls and our teams

  636. 23:29

    played each other.

  637. 23:30

    >> Our, teams, played, each, other, on

  638. 23:31

Thanksgiving Day. And so since then we

  639. 23:33

always call Well, now they don't

  640. 23:34

anymore, but we used to call each other

  641. 23:36

    up on Thanksgiving.

  642. 23:36

    >> Yeah,, we, used, to, Burlington., Yeah,

  643. 23:38

    >> we, used, to, try, trash, talk, each, other, on

  644. 23:41

on Thanksgiving. And then you go to

  645. 23:44

    Dartmouth.

  646. 23:44

    >> I, went, to, Dartmouth, Ivy, League, Rachel.

  647. 23:48

    >> Yes.

  648. 23:49

    >> And, very, very, like, uh, what, was, your

  649. 23:52

experience there? Like did you like it?

  650. 23:53

Well, great question. Um, it was, but I

  651. 23:57

went back in the 80s and it was it was

  652. 23:59

very conservative back then. Um, which I

  653. 24:02

didn't even really know what that meant

  654. 24:04

but it was just like um it took me a

  655. 24:06

while to find my people there. Like, you

  656. 24:07

know, I had friends at the beginning and

  657. 24:09

everything, but then the the general

  658. 24:11

ethos of it, I didn't feel like I really

  659. 24:14

matched with, right? Um, and then I saw

  660. 24:17

the improv group, like I've some friend

  661. 24:19

of mine from like acting class or

  662. 24:21

whatever is like, come check this out.

  663. 24:22

And as soon as I saw it, I was like, not

  664. 24:25

like this is, but I was kind of like, I

  665. 24:26

feel like I could do this, you know.

  666. 24:27

    >> This, is, exact., This, is, We, have, very

  667. 24:29

similar stories because same thing. I

  668. 24:31

went to Boston College. I was trying to

  669. 24:33

figure out how I fit in. Big

  670. 24:35

    >> I, didn't, know, that, part.

  671. 24:36

    >> Big, sports, school, like, and, lots, of, um

  672. 24:39

like uh uh private school kids, which as

  673. 24:42

much as we joke with Lex like we didn't

  674. 24:44

have like that prep school vibe of like

  675. 24:47

    >> No,, we, were, kids.

  676. 24:49

    >> What, person, is, the, Yeah,, that, was, a, big

  677. 24:51

vibe. I remember going into people's

  678. 24:53

dorm rooms and being like, "How do you

  679. 24:54

know how to get your dorm room so ready

  680. 24:57

    so fast?"

  681. 24:58

    >> And, they're, like,, "I, was, living, in

  682. 24:59

    Deerfield.

  683. 25:03

I spent three years at Deerfield." And

  684. 25:05

that's how. But I didn't know that you

  685. 25:07

    felt that way, too.

  686. 25:08

    >> Yeah., And, so, I, saw, an, improv, group, my

  687. 25:10

    freshman year.

  688. 25:11

    >> My, mother's, flea, bag.

  689. 25:12

    >> Yes., And, yours, was

  690. 25:13

    >> said, and, done.

  691. 25:19

Oh my, god., This, looks, nothing, like, those

  692. 25:21

    improv

  693. 25:21

    >> improv, group, names., Yeah., Um,, our, friend

  694. 25:24

Brian Stack, who is a performer at

  695. 25:25

Tekken City, used to like love to talk

  696. 25:27

about good and bad improv names and like

  697. 25:30

how they would either be really goofy

  698. 25:32

right, like punfilled, or they would be

  699. 25:34

    very like serious and pretentious.

  700. 25:36

    >> Oh,, I, haven't, heard, this.

  701. 25:37

    >> There, was, one, and, and, if, if, anyone's

  702. 25:39

listening and I as part of the group, I

  703. 25:41

I enjoy your work and I respect your

  704. 25:43

    work,

  705. 25:44

    >> but, um, one, of, them, he, said, was, called

  706. 25:46

    Society's Mirror. No.

  707. 25:51

    >> Is, that, real?

  708. 25:52

    >> Good, question.

  709. 25:53

    >> I, don't, know., I, There's, no, way, to, check.

  710. 25:56

    >> Like, I, could, look, at, it, on, my, laptop,

  711. 25:57

    but

  712. 25:59

    >> it, I, think, it's, out, of, batteries.

  713. 26:01

    >> Okay.

  714. 26:02

    >> Yeah., Okay., So,, you, did, you, do, Were, you

  715. 26:04

    in S and Done?

  716. 26:05

    >> So,, then, Yeah., So,, then, I, got, into, Set

  717. 26:07

and Done and then I was like, "Oh, like

  718. 26:09

these are the fun people, you know."

  719. 26:11

    >> But, you, were, a, theater, kid.

  720. 26:13

    >> I, Well,, I, mean,, I, don't, know., No,, I, just

  721. 26:16

did like you did plays, right? Did you

  722. 26:18

    do plays

  723. 26:19

    >> theater, camp?

  724. 26:20

    >> I, I, did, go, to, theater, summer, theater

  725. 26:22

camp. Yes. But not like one of those

  726. 26:24

like I'm not saying this to be like it

  727. 26:26

wasn't like those ones like the real

  728. 26:28

ones. It wasn't like professional like

  729. 26:31

you know kids that were really it was

  730. 26:32

just like suburban Boston like you know

  731. 26:35

whatever. But um but yeah then I that's

  732. 26:38

where I met our pal Alec. But um

  733. 26:41

    >> but, yeah,, I, wasn't, like, like, the, star, of

  734. 26:44

anything like I wasn't like rolling in

  735. 26:46

and then like the lead and everything. I

  736. 26:48

started out like everything I started

  737. 26:50

out like the chorus and then you move up

  738. 26:52

a little bit the next year. Yeah. That

  739. 26:53

    kind of thing.

  740. 26:54

    >> Yeah., And, and, I, think, like, me, and, you

  741. 26:56

like we didn't really know anyone that

  742. 26:57

were actors or writers growing up. So I

  743. 26:59

just never thought that would be a job.

  744. 27:00

    >> Right., Right., Right.

  745. 27:01

    >> Did, you, have, like, an, idea, as, a, kid, what

  746. 27:03

    your job would be?

  747. 27:05

    >> I, mean, like, every, kid, in, third, grade, I

  748. 27:06

wanted to be a marine biologist. like

  749. 27:09

like like us all, right? Um but no, they

  750. 27:12

like I mean I don't everyone wants to be

  751. 27:14

    a marine biologist.

  752. 27:15

    >> What, do, we, think, we're, going, to, do, here?

  753. 27:17

    >> Like, play, with, dolphins, and, save, the

  754. 27:19

nature. I I actually legitimately was

  755. 27:22

like very in and still am like nature

  756. 27:25

like a a career for in saving nature was

  757. 27:28

like something I actually when I was

  758. 27:30

little like then when I go then as you

  759. 27:32

know I wanted to be a therapist. Um, but

  760. 27:34

I also like every time I'd see a movie I

  761. 27:36

was like, "Oo." Like I was just really

  762. 27:37

intrigued, but I had no idea how you

  763. 27:39

ever did that. And I also to be really

  764. 27:42

like not self-deprecating, but it wasn't

  765. 27:43

like I had felt like I had special skill

  766. 27:46

in acting or anything, but I loved like

  767. 27:49

    cracking jokes

  768. 27:51

but yet you don't think you're

  769. 27:53

    >> like, cuz, it's, like, not, like,, "Well,, I'm

  770. 27:54

an actor." Like, not like that, but just

  771. 27:56

like I like comedy and I like watching

  772. 27:58

it and and like I had a group of funny

  773. 28:00

friends, too. So we would always like

  774. 28:02

you know, I legit funny friends. So that

  775. 28:05

was also sort of like practice, you know

  776. 28:07

    what I mean?

  777. 28:07

    >> Yeah., Okay., So, you, get, to, Dartmouth,, you

  778. 28:10

graduate and what was your degree in?

  779. 28:12

    >> It, was, drama, and, then, I, minored, in

  780. 28:14

    psychology,

  781. 28:15

    >> right?

  782. 28:15

    >> And, then, Oh,, so, my, improv, group

  783. 28:19

sophomore summer we're on campus. We

  784. 28:20

took this little like trip cuz one of

  785. 28:22

the guys from the group was from

  786. 28:23

Chicago. So, we went out to Chicago for

  787. 28:25

a week just to like check out Second

  788. 28:28

City Improv Olympic and just like, you

  789. 28:30

know, go to all the little sites there.

  790. 28:32

And then I was like, "Okay, maybe when I

  791. 28:34

graduate, I'll come back here and like

  792. 28:36

try this, you know." And I sort of just

  793. 28:38

wanted to try it more to know that I'd

  794. 28:41

given, it, a, shot., I, don't, know how, you

  795. 28:42

were about this, but I was kind of you

  796. 28:44

all you hear is like it's so hard you're

  797. 28:46

never going to make it. like that's all

  798. 28:47

you hear when so then I was like buying

  799. 28:49

into that and then I was like okay I'm

  800. 28:51

just going to go out and try Chicago and

  801. 28:53

then I won't make it and then I'll come

  802. 28:54

back and be a therapist in suburban

  803. 28:56

Boston and um but then like very then

  804. 28:59

like I mean I don't know how much

  805. 29:00

detaile go but right when I got there I

  806. 29:02

did not get into classes at Second City

  807. 29:04

like I heard like everyone auditions

  808. 29:06

gets into classes and then I didn't get

  809. 29:08

into classes and then I was like oh like

  810. 29:10

what did I do you know but then I just

  811. 29:12

stuck it out and then I took class like

  812. 29:13

later like everything I did I kind of

  813. 29:15

didn't get the first time around sort

  814. 29:17

    of. Um

  815. 29:17

    >> Oh,, interesting., Interesting.

  816. 29:19

    >> Well,, like, that, and, then, like, touring

  817. 29:21

company I auditioned and didn't get in

  818. 29:23

    and then like

  819. 29:24

    >> um, well, SNL, I, auditioned, two, times, like

  820. 29:26

just but then you kind of get used to

  821. 29:29

that I guess. I don't know but um but

  822. 29:31

anyway uh yeah so then I eventually got

  823. 29:34

into the classes and then did like

  824. 29:36

    little theater things there and

  825. 29:38

eventually got into the touring company.

  826. 29:41

    >> So, you, get, to, Chicago, and, do, you

  827. 29:42

    remember when we first met?

  828. 29:44

    >> I, do., Well,, in, my, memory,, we, were, in, the

  829. 29:46

lobby of Second City and you had just

  830. 29:49

moved there and you were in the touring

  831. 29:51

company,, I, guess., I, don't, know if, you

  832. 29:52

were in it yet or just coming around to

  833. 29:54

check it out or something, but anyway, I

  834. 29:56

remember meeting you and I remember you

  835. 29:59

being really friendly and like I would

  836. 30:00

just say like sunshiny like it's not you

  837. 30:03

    you don't always remember meeting

  838. 30:04

someone for the first time, but I do

  839. 30:06

remember, at least, in, my, mind, this, was

  840. 30:07

the first time. And I just remember you

  841. 30:09

were like very like like you are you

  842. 30:10

were very friendly and smiley and you

  843. 30:13

    know cute little blondie.

  844. 30:16

    >> I, remember, meeting, you, but, I, didn't, see

  845. 30:18

    you. I saw you. So

  846. 30:20

    >> I, arrived, and, you, were, kind, of, the

  847. 30:22

junior to my freshman in Chicago I would

  848. 30:24

say. And I saw you on stage. You were in

  849. 30:27

Lois Cass an improv show very like kind

  850. 30:31

of famous improv show named after

  851. 30:34

    >> a, woman

  852. 30:34

    >> the, woman, that, worked, in, the, office, or

  853. 30:35

    something. I don't.

  854. 30:36

    >> Yeah., Sketch, and, improv, and, comedy,, it's

  855. 30:38

just like music, right? Like it's like

  856. 30:39

"Oh, go check out this cool band." Like

  857. 30:41

"Oh, these two people are singing

  858. 30:43

together." Um, you know, you just were

  859. 30:46

like watching groups and trying to

  860. 30:48

figure out what was good. What did you

  861. 30:50

like? And Lois, the show that you were

  862. 30:52

in, um, was just like, "Oh, these are

  863. 30:54

the cool good improvisers. Go see them."

  864. 30:57

And I remember so the first time I saw

  865. 30:59

you before we met um I saw you on stage

  866. 31:02

and I just remember you know

  867. 31:05

I think like when you see someone on

  868. 31:07

stage for the first time it's very it's

  869. 31:09

a very interesting dynamic like you're

  870. 31:10

just like forever looking up to them

  871. 31:12

like it feels like and I just was like

  872. 31:14

oh she's so funny like just loved being

  873. 31:19

like watching you perform like just and

  874. 31:22

um and you know subsequently like we got

  875. 31:25

to know each other in Chicago and I was

  876. 31:27

    your understudy for uh

  877. 31:30

    >> touring, company, for, sure., Yeah.

  878. 31:32

    >> So,, what, is, touring, company, for, people

  879. 31:34

    who don't know?

  880. 31:34

    >> Well,, it's, like, your, first, step, to

  881. 31:36

getting into Second City and you're not

  882. 31:37

out on the road like for big long times.

  883. 31:39

You're just like you're going to Indiana

  884. 31:41

for the weekend like that kind of thing.

  885. 31:43

Yeah. And it's just sort of like cutting

  886. 31:45

your teeth and I mean you get paid a

  887. 31:48

minimal sums. You're like it's your

  888. 31:50

first like I'm a working actor, you

  889. 31:51

know? And it's sort of your first step

  890. 31:53

to moving up the little ladder there.

  891. 31:55

    >> Yeah., So,, we, didn't, get, to, tour, together

  892. 31:57

cuz I was only filling in when you were

  893. 31:59

    >> and, then, Amy, struck, out, and, moved, to, New

  894. 32:03

York and started UCB, which I told you

  895. 32:05

before that I was always just like, what

  896. 32:07

are you guys? Like, I didn't know you

  897. 32:09

guys that well, but I was just like

  898. 32:10

what are they doing? Like, they're on

  899. 32:11

track to, you know, you were already

  900. 32:13

very successful in Chicago or like

  901. 32:16

    successful like

  902. 32:18

    >> known, to, be, good, improvisers,, whatever.

  903. 32:20

But um but then like you definitely

  904. 32:21

would have moved up the ranks at Second

  905. 32:23

City, but you guys had this like pioneer

  906. 32:26

spirit of moving here and started

  907. 32:28

    >> this, kind, of, like, if, if, we're, if, the

  908. 32:30

Drach and Polar romcom is happening

  909. 32:32

this is where the we kind of separate

  910. 32:34

for a little bit to go find our own

  911. 32:36

right? because I moved to New York.

  912. 32:39

You're on mainstage in a very famous

  913. 32:42

show at Second City and then you meet

  914. 32:44

    Tina when

  915. 32:45

    >> Oh,, so, then, Tina, joined, then, the, next

  916. 32:47

show then they changed it to three men

  917. 32:49

    three women which was like

  918. 32:50

    revolutionary.

  919. 32:51

    >> I, was, like, what?

  920. 32:52

    >> I, know, but, um

  921. 32:54

    >> three, women, together., I, know., But, then

  922. 32:56

Tina came in for the next show, my

  923. 32:58

second show on Mainstage called Citizen

  924. 33:00

Gates. And uh she was of course

  925. 33:03

hilarious from the get-go. And then we

  926. 33:06

did two shows together. And then and

  927. 33:08

then I started to get more comfortable

  928. 33:10

up there and like being better at

  929. 33:11

creating characters and all that. And

  930. 33:13

then Tina went off to write for SNL

  931. 33:15

after the second her second show. And

  932. 33:18

    then I stayed there.

  933. 33:19

    >> How, many, more, years, did, you, stay, there?

  934. 33:20

    >> I, was, um, well, I, was, four, years, on, the

  935. 33:22

    main stage

  936. 33:23

    >> and, uh, and, it, was, such, a, fun, job., I, mean

  937. 33:27

it might have been like my favorite job

  938. 33:28

    ever.

  939. 33:29

    >> Yeah., Like, take, us, back, to, what, it, was

  940. 33:31

like a day when you were on the main

  941. 33:33

station. What was that day like?

  942. 33:36

    >> Well,, I, mean,, I, remember, like, you'd

  943. 33:37

sleep really late, much later than I do

  944. 33:39

now. But I just Well, but then you're

  945. 33:41

writing the show. If you're rehearsing

  946. 33:43

you're writing the show by day. So

  947. 33:44

you're in rehearsal all day. So, and

  948. 33:46

that but you never wrote like how we did

  949. 33:48

at SNL where you were like at a

  950. 33:49

    typewriter. What? A typewriter. Okay.

  951. 33:51

    >> Word, processor.

  952. 33:54

    >> When, you, were, at, a

  953. 33:55

    >> I, think, I, got, a, good, one, here.

  954. 33:57

    >> Give, me, more, paper.

  955. 33:59

    >> I'm, on, a, paper., Schultzy.

  956. 34:03

Okay. Computer is what they're called

  957. 34:06

    now. But um

  958. 34:08

but no, like you it's not like SNL when

  959. 34:11

you're like, "Oh, let's think of

  960. 34:13

something." We're in an office. It was

  961. 34:15

all on its feet and like just someone

  962. 34:18

had an idea and you just and then you

  963. 34:20

try it out in front of the audience or

  964. 34:21

the audience would give a suggestion and

  965. 34:22

then a scene would really hit from an

  966. 34:24

    audience suggestion. Let's try that

  967. 34:25

again, but let's change this. So that's

  968. 34:27

how we wrote the thing. Um, and then

  969. 34:29

eventually like the show would be done

  970. 34:31

and it'd be set and then you just do the

  971. 34:33

show night after night. But um, but the

  972. 34:36

show was like sketch like for those that

  973. 34:38

don't know like and then afterwards

  974. 34:39

you'd improvise every night pretty much.

  975. 34:42

And um that's how you get really good at

  976. 34:44

improvising by just night after night

  977. 34:46

after night. Cuz if I had improvised

  978. 34:47

right now, I'd be like uh like I'd wait

  979. 34:50

linger in the backline. You know, if you

  980. 34:52

keep doing it like welloiled machine.

  981. 35:02

    >> So, talk, to, us, about, you're, on, you, get, to

  982. 35:03

    SNL what year?

  983. 35:05

    >> 99,

  984. 35:06

    >> right?

  985. 35:06

    >> Yeah., Fall, of, 99., And, uh, I, was, the, only

  986. 35:09

new person that year. Well, the only new

  987. 35:12

actor, Ali, was a new writer. But um but

  988. 35:15

yeah, so you just get like

  989. 35:17

    >> who's, on, the, cast, when, you

  990. 35:19

    >> when, you, just, said, us, and, I, just, got, a

  991. 35:20

little tense. You know, this show comes

  992. 35:23

out on Tuesdays. And to me, I just

  993. 35:25

realized I was like, "Oh, this is like a

  994. 35:28

    a new way to

  995. 35:30

change Tuesdays for me, cuz Tuesdays

  996. 35:32

used to be writing night at SNL where it

  997. 35:34

was like the dread of Tuesdays. Like, oh

  998. 35:37

no, this is the night where I have to

  999. 35:39

try to get on the show because you

  1000. 35:41

audition basically every week and I

  1001. 35:43

    haven't written anything yet and I'm I'm

  1002. 35:44

so tired and uh I'm going to let the

  1003. 35:47

host down. I'm going to let every myself

  1004. 35:49

down." now that there's like this show

  1005. 35:51

comes on she says I don't know there's

  1006. 35:52

    just something like but yes

  1007. 35:54

I think people are aware of the dread

  1008. 35:56

but what what just came up for you

  1009. 36:00

    which particular type of dread

  1010. 36:02

    >> I, don't, know, I, just, thought, of, like

  1011. 36:03

    walking in there

  1012. 36:06

    and like picturing the hallway

  1013. 36:08

    >> and, I, think, I, thought, you, were, going, to

  1014. 36:09

like go to the audition but no then I'm

  1015. 36:11

like right in that hallway I'm in the

  1016. 36:13

hallway Amy I'm in the hallway stay in

  1017. 36:16

the hallway stay in the hallway stay

  1018. 36:18

    there Rachel

  1019. 36:19

    I can still I can

  1020. 36:23

    >> feel, your, feet, on, the, ground.

  1021. 36:24

    >> Here, comes, Lauren, down, the, hallway., Um

  1022. 36:26

    okay. Um

  1023. 36:27

    >> so, you're, there, by, that's, hard, being, the

  1024. 36:29

    only new cast.

  1025. 36:30

    >> That, was, hard., I, can't, I, cannot, tell, a

  1026. 36:32

    lie. That was hard because

  1027. 36:34

    >> that, place, is, like, Well,, I, think, you

  1028. 36:36

know some like when Will Ferrell came in

  1029. 36:38

I think is the year that like a whole

  1030. 36:40

bunch of new people they were like the

  1031. 36:42

freshman class and then you're all like

  1032. 36:44

in it together. But when you come in

  1033. 36:46

new, like no one's like, you know

  1034. 36:49

here's how this works in here. So, and

  1035. 36:50

it's just you're kind of just like, "Hey

  1036. 36:52

    guys, what's you know

  1037. 36:54

    >> wandering, the, halls, kind, of."

  1038. 36:55

    >> It, definitely, feels, like, the, the, high

  1039. 36:57

school version of like your tray in the

  1040. 36:59

lunchroom, like where do I sit?

  1041. 37:01

    >> Yeah,, for, sure., Um,, I, mean, Tina, was

  1042. 37:04

there, so that was good because she knew

  1043. 37:07

how already she knew the system

  1044. 37:09

obviously, but like I had someone to

  1045. 37:11

write with because some people come in

  1046. 37:13

there and they're great, but if they if

  1047. 37:16

they don't know how to write for like

  1048. 37:17

also the writing for SNL is very

  1049. 37:18

different from writing for Second City.

  1050. 37:20

Like a scene that killed a Second City

  1051. 37:22

you couldn't get it on SNL cuz it's just

  1052. 37:24

this different like and at the time

  1053. 37:26

you're like but this is awesome and why

  1054. 37:28

don't you? But now, like with more

  1055. 37:30

wisdom, I'm like, why theater? Why

  1056. 37:32

    wouldn't it work?

  1057. 37:32

    >> Just, cuz, like, a, a, scene, in, the, theater

  1058. 37:34

like could take longer to get going, you

  1059. 37:36

didn't need to have like laugh laugh.

  1060. 37:38

Like it's like people in the theater are

  1061. 37:39

just like into seeing this character

  1062. 37:41

    kind of

  1063. 37:42

    >> do, their, thing., But, at, SNL, had, to, be

  1064. 37:44

like you need laughs like off the bat.

  1065. 37:46

You need to know what this is right

  1066. 37:47

    away. And um

  1067. 37:49

    >> I, don't, know, just, one, thing, that

  1068. 37:51

    >> Do, you, remember, the, first, scene, on, SNL

  1069. 37:52

that like you got were getting laughs

  1070. 37:54

and you thought like it's working? Like

  1071. 37:56

    that felt like

  1072. 37:57

    >> No., Um

  1073. 38:01

um gosh, I don't remember the first cuz

  1074. 38:04

I remember the first few times I got on

  1075. 38:06

    >> like, I, wasn't, even, I, like, left, my, body.

  1076. 38:09

So I don't remember like this is going

  1077. 38:10

really well. I was just like I'm on like

  1078. 38:12

that kind of thing. Yeah. Um

  1079. 38:16

well the first very first show I wasn't

  1080. 38:19

in like the you know season premiere

  1081. 38:21

whatever right and like you've told all

  1082. 38:23

your friends like I'm on a and like

  1083. 38:24

everyone's watching it your scene gets

  1084. 38:26

cut like it does and then the next week

  1085. 38:28

the same thing happened scene got cut so

  1086. 38:30

it was like the third week

  1087. 38:32

    >> who, was, the, host, do, you, remember

  1088. 38:33

    >> the, one, that, I, got, on, was, uh, I, should

  1089. 38:35

know this oh my god well I know the

  1090. 38:37

first one was Jerry Seinfeld then it was

  1091. 38:39

Nor McDonald and then it was

  1092. 38:42

and does not compute. Oh my god. I don't

  1093. 38:45

    >> know., It's, funny., The, brain, remembers

  1094. 38:46

trauma. So, you remember the two shows

  1095. 38:49

    that you weren't on.

  1096. 38:52

    >> Dana, Carvey., I, don't, going, to, have, to

  1097. 38:54

    go.

  1098. 38:54

    >> They're, going to, do, those, three, guys, in

  1099. 38:56

a row. Let's What year was it, Drachie?

  1100. 38:57

    >> It, was, 1999., Third, episode.

  1101. 39:00

    >> Okay., This, will, be, a, fun, game.

  1102. 39:01

    >> Dana, Carvey.

  1103. 39:02

    >> Okay., I'm, going, to, And, I'm, going, to, have

  1104. 39:03

you guess the musical guest because

  1105. 39:04

    that's always fun, too.

  1106. 39:06

    >> Oh, my, god.

  1107. 39:07

    >> 1999., I, don't, remember, anything., 1999

  1108. 39:11

    SNL

  1109. 39:12

hosts. And don't worry, we're gonna keep

  1110. 39:14

    all

  1111. 39:15

    >> Let, me, tell, you, one, cool, thing,, though.

  1112. 39:16

Let me I just heard that. Wait, let me

  1113. 39:19

tell you one cool thing, though.

  1114. 39:20

    >> Please.

  1115. 39:21

    >> The

  1116. 39:23

Please. Um, the very first musical guest

  1117. 39:27

was David Bowie. And when I was I've

  1118. 39:30

told this before, but when I was getting

  1119. 39:32

my photo taken for like the very first

  1120. 39:34

opening credits, like it was on the

  1121. 39:36

stage, you know, like in 8H and David

  1122. 39:39

Bowie was it was Thursday. He was

  1123. 39:41

rehearsing with the band. So like I'm

  1124. 39:43

getting my picture taken and he's right

  1125. 39:45

over there singing Rebel Rebel. I mean

  1126. 39:48

I have chills every time I think about

  1127. 39:49

that because that was just like

  1128. 39:52

I mean I don't even have words for like

  1129. 39:55

    the surrealness.

  1130. 39:57

    That's a very that's a to have a

  1131. 39:59

soundtrack of that moment for your life

  1132. 40:01

    and it's David Bowie playing

  1133. 40:02

    >> David, Bowie, icon., Yeah., So, I, remember

  1134. 40:05

    that.

  1135. 40:06

    >> Should, we, tell, the, Black, Crow, story?

  1136. 40:07

    >> So, one, time, So, I, don't, do, drugs, at, all.

  1137. 40:16

So So and then one time the Black Crows

  1138. 40:19

were the musical guest and um someone in

  1139. 40:21

the department came up to me. He's like

  1140. 40:23

    "Hey, do you want

  1141. 40:28

That's my drug offer voice. Hey, do you

  1142. 40:31

    want

  1143. 40:32

um whatever you call it? Joint.

  1144. 40:35

    >> Not, a, joint,, but, just, like, a, hit, off, a

  1145. 40:37

    joint. I see.

  1146. 40:38

    >> And, I, was, I, don't know., I', I, tried, it, a

  1147. 40:40

couple times. It's never really worked.

  1148. 40:42

I've never really dug it. And then I was

  1149. 40:44

like, "Okay, sure." So, I took like one

  1150. 40:47

puff off of this Black Crows. Am I going

  1151. 40:49

to get sued? The Black Crows pot. And

  1152. 40:54

took a hit off the black crow's pot. I

  1153. 40:57

took a hit off the black crow's pot and

  1154. 41:00

my my cousin was visiting me, my cousin

  1155. 41:03

Zach, and um I came back to the table

  1156. 41:06

and I was like, "Oh, I guess this is

  1157. 41:08

like I'm really high right now." And I

  1158. 41:10

was so embarrassed cuz like it was my

  1159. 41:12

    little cousin

  1160. 41:16

and I never ever ever get high. And then

  1161. 41:20

I came back and I was kind of like

  1162. 41:22

I don't really remember if I told him or

  1163. 41:24

    not.

  1164. 41:25

    >> You, Oh,, he, didn't., He, might, not, even

  1165. 41:26

    know.

  1166. 41:26

    >> I, don't, even, know., But, um, that, was, my

  1167. 41:29

    one like

  1168. 41:29

    >> I, remember, you, telling, me, you, couldn't

  1169. 41:31

    get up from your chair.

  1170. 41:32

    >> Oh,, I, don't, remember, that., But, it's

  1171. 41:33

    possible. It's possible.

  1172. 41:34

    >> You, were, kind, of, stuck.

  1173. 41:35

    >> I, was, just, like, really, like, anyway., And

  1174. 41:39

    that's why I don't do drugs.

  1175. 41:41

    >> I, mean,

  1176. 41:42

    >> no,, I'm, just, not, into, that, feeling,, I

  1177. 41:44

    guess. But

  1178. 41:44

    >> no,, you're, not, into, that.

  1179. 41:46

    >> Only, if, it's, from, the, Black, Crows., and

  1180. 41:48

Ben. Yes. Chris Chris Robinson. Call me.

  1181. 41:52

    Call me.

  1182. 41:57

I just love that. That was the

  1183. 41:59

    >> By, the, way,

  1184. 42:00

    >> Also,, it, wasn't, it, wasn't, like, I, was

  1185. 42:02

like partying with the Black Cross. It

  1186. 42:03

was like secondhanded made it down to

  1187. 42:05

the music guy and I was told it was from

  1188. 42:07

    the Black Cross.

  1189. 42:08

    >> But, it's, so, interesting, that, you, took

  1190. 42:10

the hit that you at least

  1191. 42:13

I was feeling a little jaunty that

  1192. 42:14

    night. I don't know. I don't know. No

  1193. 42:17

but drugs is not your thing. Never

  1194. 42:20

    like a margarita.

  1195. 42:21

    >> Like, a, margarita.

  1196. 42:23

    >> I, know, you., But, look, at, Yes.

  1197. 42:25

    >> Or, perhaps, you, like, to, sail, to, the, Pogio

  1198. 42:28

    Islands.

  1199. 42:29

    >> Amy, and, I, will, occasionally, sail, to, the

  1200. 42:31

    Pog Grigios.

  1201. 42:32

    >> We'll, text, each, other, and, say,, "Shall, we

  1202. 42:33

    take a trip

  1203. 42:34

    >> to, the, to, the, Grigios?"

  1204. 42:35

    >> Yeah.

  1205. 42:38

    Yeah.

  1206. 42:41

Um, and then when you were at SNL, like

  1207. 42:44

I feel like we got it I was thinking

  1208. 42:47

today about all the stuff we got to do

  1209. 42:48

together and we got to do a lot of dumb

  1210. 42:51

    >> so, fun.

  1211. 42:52

    >> So, fun, stuff.

  1212. 42:52

    >> Oh, my, gosh., And, but, you, know, and, I, was

  1213. 42:56

thinking it was like I I mean in many

  1214. 42:58

ways I wish we had I I wish we had more

  1215. 43:01

time together when I was more

  1216. 43:02

experienced there because I was new and

  1217. 43:04

kind of stressed and you were the again

  1218. 43:07

the junior to my senior and I felt like

  1219. 43:09

I loosened up more and figured out how

  1220. 43:11

to like just have more fun as as I got

  1221. 43:14

    older there.

  1222. 43:15

    >> Um

  1223. 43:16

    >> but, we, did, get, to, do, some, fun, stuff

  1224. 43:18

together. First of all, you were in the

  1225. 43:20

original Debbie Downer and that was so

  1226. 43:22

fun. I mean, just to be laughing there

  1227. 43:24

    with you.

  1228. 43:25

    >> Well,, you, bring, this, up, and, you, know,, I

  1229. 43:28

ask this question to people on this

  1230. 43:30

podcast and I truly feel like it is

  1231. 43:32

because of Debbie Downer that I ask this

  1232. 43:34

question. Again, I owe you a lot of

  1233. 43:35

money and thank you for thank you for

  1234. 43:37

building this podcast with me. Um, but

  1235. 43:40

Debbie Downer, I've said it many times

  1236. 43:42

before, was and is the thing that I go

  1237. 43:44

to, um, uh, also maybe now replaced by

  1238. 43:48

the clip, the clip of this podcast.

  1239. 43:50

    >> I, watch, the, clip, a, lot, of, times., And, I

  1240. 43:52

just wanted to clarify, I don't go like

  1241. 43:54

watch my work like I don't go watch like

  1242. 43:56

a movie I did cuz like I just like to

  1243. 43:58

have it in my head. But that it's like I

  1244. 44:00

    said, it was like

  1245. 44:02

    >> seeing, your, biggest, crackup.

  1246. 44:04

    >> Yes.

  1247. 44:04

    >> And, just, like, I, I, have, to, laugh, every

  1248. 44:06

    time I watch it.

  1249. 44:07

    >> Me, too., And, Debbie, Downer, was, like, that

  1250. 44:09

for me during very dark times because it

  1251. 44:11

    was the combination of

  1252. 44:14

    >> us, all, having, fun., you

  1253. 44:18

    your

  1254. 44:20

like the way in which you were

  1255. 44:21

physically trying to hold it together

  1256. 44:23

like the way like the laugh was like um

  1257. 44:27

something you were trying to hold in

  1258. 44:29

combined with the zoom zoom in

  1259. 44:32

    >> and, the, sound, effect

  1260. 44:35

    >> and, we've, watched, it, so, many, times, like

  1261. 44:37

Emily's knows every single like this is

  1262. 44:39

the part where your lip starts quivering

  1263. 44:41

because there's one part where at the

  1264. 44:42

    very beginning I'm going g

  1265. 44:45

and Then there's the part where you

  1266. 44:46

something falls backstage and I look

  1267. 44:48

away my eyes start over there like we

  1268. 44:50

    know every single moment.

  1269. 44:52

    >> It, is, it's, like, the, Zruder, film, like

  1270. 44:54

frame by frame and it proves it just it

  1271. 44:57

got me. It's such a serotonin boost.

  1272. 45:00

    >> Before, we, move, on, talk, to, us, about, the

  1273. 45:03

like who did you write Debbie Downer

  1274. 45:04

with and how did it start?

  1275. 45:06

    >> Like, the, origin, of

  1276. 45:08

    >> Yes., The, origin, of, people, will, want, to

  1277. 45:10

know. So, um, well, it really started

  1278. 45:13

because I went on a vacation by myself

  1279. 45:17

that had been suggested to me by a

  1280. 45:19

    therapist,

  1281. 45:21

and I often leave that detail out, but

  1282. 45:24

since I'm on this one-on-one Amy

  1283. 45:26

interview, no, I've said it like once or

  1284. 45:29

twice, but usually I leave that part out

  1285. 45:30

for the masses. But, um, no, uh, not

  1286. 45:33

like this. This number one podcast

  1287. 45:35

masses. Um, but no, she was she just

  1288. 45:39

like she kept saying like take a trip by

  1289. 45:41

yourself and I was like why? Like I

  1290. 45:43

don't want to do that. I could go with

  1291. 45:44

friends. Like I don't want and I just

  1292. 45:46

kind of took it as like doctor's orders.

  1293. 45:48

Like I just sort of like I'm doing this

  1294. 45:50

and I like self-propelled myself to the

  1295. 45:54

    jungles of Costa Rica.

  1296. 45:59

No, but I wanted to pick somewhere that

  1297. 46:01

it wasn't going to be like honeymooners

  1298. 46:02

and like I wanted to pick somewhere that

  1299. 46:04

was like just like I don't know

  1300. 46:06

somewhere kind of remote I guess. So it

  1301. 46:08

was like very remote. It was in the Osa

  1302. 46:10

Peninsula. You had to take like the big

  1303. 46:11

plane then you take the smaller plane

  1304. 46:13

then you take the 2hour jeep drive. I

  1305. 46:16

mean I was going deep out of society

  1306. 46:20

and each time they were like it was like

  1307. 46:24

Barbara Potty one. Well no. So I picked

  1308. 46:26

this. It was like this eco lodge thing.

  1309. 46:29

So, I went there and um and then it was

  1310. 46:31

just like a it was so there was like

  1311. 46:33

these communal it wasn't like a lot of

  1312. 46:34

people there and it was actually really

  1313. 46:36

cool like and I did meet really cool

  1314. 46:38

people and um I met these two sisters

  1315. 46:41

that like at like they were older but

  1316. 46:42

they're like my age right now but um I

  1317. 46:45

mean the age I'm now and they were sort

  1318. 46:47

of like they sort of told me like the

  1319. 46:48

    rudimentary

  1320. 46:50

u fundamentals of what is later known as

  1321. 46:52

the secret like did you did I tell you

  1322. 46:55

    when I was on this

  1323. 46:56

    >> people, should, know, Dr., knew, the, secret

  1324. 46:57

    before anyone knew.

  1325. 46:58

    >> So, when, I, from, and, I, learned, it, from, the

  1326. 47:00

jungles of Costa Rica from two white

  1327. 47:02

ladies that were from Colorado. But

  1328. 47:04

anyway, so so so they like they were

  1329. 47:08

just weird, you know, cuz you're like

  1330. 47:09

chatting and and I got to say like hats

  1331. 47:11

off to the suggestion cuz I never would

  1332. 47:13

have talked to strangers if I was with a

  1333. 47:15

friend, right? You know, so I'm like

  1334. 47:17

having this conversation and these women

  1335. 47:19

were telling me about like, you know

  1336. 47:21

basically like what's the law of

  1337. 47:22

attraction, I guess. But they put it

  1338. 47:24

like you know if you if you think on

  1339. 47:26

positive things positive and if you're

  1340. 47:28

if you're focusing on lack you'll

  1341. 47:30

attract lack basically. But then it

  1342. 47:33

almost like the whole thing got like

  1343. 47:34

sealed because then we were on this like

  1344. 47:36

you know you could do like nature walks

  1345. 47:38

or whatever and we were on this like

  1346. 47:40

walk on the beach like with the little

  1347. 47:41

like it wasn't like a group. It was like

  1348. 47:43

whoever's here and wants to go on this

  1349. 47:44

thing. And um this woman was saying like

  1350. 47:47

there were these like beautiful birds

  1351. 47:49

overhead these like scarlet macaus and

  1352. 47:52

this like way up in the sky and this

  1353. 47:54

woman goes I I want a feather to bring

  1354. 47:56

home for my daughter and I swear like 20

  1355. 48:01

seconds later from like way way up high

  1356. 48:05

this feather starts to just go and it

  1357. 48:08

falls down. We all like kind of see it

  1358. 48:09

like and it lands like right at her

  1359. 48:12

    feet.

  1360. 48:12

    >> Whoa.

  1361. 48:14

    >> Amy, doesn't, believe, in, any, of, this

  1362. 48:15

    stuff.

  1363. 48:16

    >> I, do., I

  1364. 48:17

    >> Okay., No,, that, that's, cool., That's, cool.

  1365. 48:18

    But I believe in manifesting.

  1366. 48:20

    >> That, was, cool, though., So, then, I, was, just

  1367. 48:21

like sold. I'll join your cult. No, but

  1368. 48:26

    >> No,, but, then, that, Okay,, this, isn't

  1369. 48:28

anything about Debbie Donner. This is

  1370. 48:29

just other stuff on that trip. But

  1371. 48:31

anyway, but then the Debbie Donner story

  1372. 48:33

is that when later it was like sitting

  1373. 48:35

at dinner like you're with randos that

  1374. 48:37

are there and um people just making

  1375. 48:40

chitchat and someone said like where are

  1376. 48:42

you from and I said New York and then

  1377. 48:43

they said like oh were you there for 911

  1378. 48:47

and it was like 3 years after 911. It

  1379. 48:50

wasn't like it just happened. It was

  1380. 48:52

kind of out of and then I was kind of

  1381. 48:54

like uh yeah and then like it's kind of

  1382. 48:58

like just like in Debbie D you had to

  1383. 49:00

like get the conversation back because

  1384. 49:01

    it was like vacation times

  1385. 49:03

    >> right

  1386. 49:04

    >> and, then, like, about, a, week, later, after, I

  1387. 49:06

got home I was like out listening to

  1388. 49:09

some band which isn't something I

  1389. 49:10

usually do but I think that's kind of

  1390. 49:12

interesting cuz like doing something you

  1391. 49:13

don't usually do and then your brain is

  1392. 49:15

kind, of, like, I, don't know, you're, not, on

  1393. 49:17

your usual channels I guess but then I

  1394. 49:20

just had that idea of is kind of based

  1395. 49:22

on that like some like that a Debbie

  1396. 49:24

Downer popped into my head of like

  1397. 49:26

    >> yes

  1398. 49:26

    >> and, then, which, this, is, kind, of, just

  1399. 49:30

talking creativity I found at SNL you

  1400. 49:33

couldn't just go in there and like okay

  1401. 49:35

let's think of a scene like it had to be

  1402. 49:36

    like moments like that like

  1403. 49:38

    >> and, to, me, that, only, happened, like, once

  1404. 49:40

or twice a year which is why like you

  1405. 49:42

might sit there at home be like why

  1406. 49:44

isn't there like like SNL man but it's

  1407. 49:46

    like thinking of really original

  1408. 49:48

characters that kind of like hit on

  1409. 49:50

something. It's not something you can

  1410. 49:53

like steer the ship on. It like to me

  1411. 49:55

like it has to like vibe out with you.

  1412. 49:59

    >> Yes., You, have, to, be, like, you, have, to, to

  1413. 50:01

your point, you have to like keep the

  1414. 50:02

channel open and be like find the muse

  1415. 50:04

and like let it find you. It just can't

  1416. 50:06

    be like turned out.

  1417. 50:08

    >> Exactly.

  1418. 50:08

    >> And, how, then, I, took, it, to, Paula, Pel, who

  1419. 50:11

we wrote with often and is hilarious and

  1420. 50:14

everyone knows Paula now because I love

  1421. 50:15

Paula's like out there more in front of

  1422. 50:17

the camera. But um but anyway, and then

  1423. 50:19

we were on writing night, we were trying

  1424. 50:21

to write it. We set it in an office and

  1425. 50:23

it just kind of wasn't really flowing.

  1426. 50:25

We it just wasn't really jing. And then

  1427. 50:27

we were like maybe we need to put her

  1428. 50:29

somewhere really happy. So then we

  1429. 50:30

thought of Disney World, of course

  1430. 50:32

happiest place on earth. And then and

  1431. 50:34

then while we were writing it, like when

  1432. 50:36

like of course Paula was cracking me up

  1433. 50:38

with these oneliners and everything and

  1434. 50:39

then we started just going like like

  1435. 50:41

just for ourselves and then we're like

  1436. 50:43

what if we put that in the scene with

  1437. 50:46

actual trombone sound. So then for read

  1438. 50:48

through we had I don't remember if we

  1439. 50:49

had like the live person or someone just

  1440. 50:50

had done it but then at read through

  1441. 50:52

like it killed but then you never know

  1442. 50:54

cuz sometimes something can kill at the

  1443. 50:56

table and then when we were in dress

  1444. 50:59

rehearsal Jimmy and Horatio were kind of

  1445. 51:01

laughing and I was thinking like you

  1446. 51:03

guys like I feel like this could work

  1447. 51:04

    like

  1448. 51:05

    >> keep, it, together, guys, and, then, like, on

  1449. 51:08

air I just flubbed one of the lines and

  1450. 51:10

    then I don't even know I guess I was

  1451. 51:12

    like so nervous

  1452. 51:13

    >> and, then, on, you, but, thankfully, you, just

  1453. 51:17

like like the good Pisces fish like you

  1454. 51:20

just like you went along for the like it

  1455. 51:24

was it's so joyous watching it because

  1456. 51:26

it is just the com it's like what real

  1457. 51:28

live TV is supposed to feel like like it

  1458. 51:31

just felt like a a special moment in

  1459. 51:34

time and also um I mean you are such a

  1460. 51:39

good performer that you you're able you

  1461. 51:42

were able to like do it and have and

  1462. 51:45

enjoy doing it at the same time. It was

  1463. 51:47

like just it's very sometimes when

  1464. 51:49

people are stressed it's stressful to

  1465. 51:52

watch like it's not good to watch.

  1466. 51:53

    >> That's, how, I, feel., But, you, don't, seem

  1467. 51:56

    stressed in that moment.

  1468. 51:57

    >> Well,, I, love, watching, performers, that

  1469. 51:59

like this is what like you know I feel

  1470. 52:01

like I've had so much time now that I'm

  1471. 52:03

older to like think of like what makes a

  1472. 52:05

good comed and everything like that. And

  1473. 52:06

like I love watching people like you can

  1474. 52:08

tell that underneath it they're also

  1475. 52:10

like laughing inside. Like I mean better

  1476. 52:12

to keep it inside but I mean like like

  1477. 52:15

    >> and, I, feel, like, you, have, that, like, I, was

  1478. 52:16

just talking about you um I forget like

  1479. 52:20

in what context but like you are always

  1480. 52:23

like you can see the joy of perform like

  1481. 52:25

    there's two levels happening. There's

  1482. 52:27

like what you're performing and then the

  1483. 52:30

sort of joyful like under bubbling

  1484. 52:32

    that's also happening

  1485. 52:34

    >> like, I, just, like, Steve, Krill, just, popped

  1486. 52:35

into my mind as like someone that

  1487. 52:38

    >> like, you, can, see, the, fun, happening

  1488. 52:40

behind the Feral go the mischievous like

  1489. 52:44

dance underneath it where they're having

  1490. 52:46

fun. Circling all the way back to Debbie

  1491. 52:48

Downer and all the way back to the

  1492. 52:49

question that I ask my guests.

  1493. 52:51

    >> This, brings, up, the, person, that, I, spoke

  1494. 52:53

    to earlier before this podcast.

  1495. 52:56

    >> So,, you, know,, we, always, like, to, talk

  1496. 52:58

    well behind people's backs.

  1497. 52:59

    >> I, talked, to, the, great, Kevin, Kahun, about

  1498. 53:01

    you today.

  1499. 53:02

    >> You, did?, Oh, my, god., I, was, wondering, who

  1500. 53:05

my person was going to be. And um

  1501. 53:08

because I want him to lead us into

  1502. 53:09

Broadway, which we're going to next um

  1503. 53:12

this Virgo has a plan. Okay. And I'm

  1504. 53:14

taking you there, babe. I'm taking you

  1505. 53:16

there. I got no Okay. I'm aware of the

  1506. 53:18

time. I'm aware of the time.

  1507. 53:19

    >> Okay., I, could, hang, all, day,, but

  1508. 53:21

    >> No,, I'm, just, kidding., Um, but, but, I

  1509. 53:23

talked to Kevin uh and uh he he had a

  1510. 53:27

couple really good questions for you.

  1511. 53:28

And one was what what and it's and it's

  1512. 53:31

this it's a similar question to what we

  1513. 53:32

ask on the podcast. is like if uh like

  1514. 53:36

when you're feeling that when when

  1515. 53:38

Rachel is feeling like that Debbie

  1516. 53:40

Downer feeling, what do you do to get

  1517. 53:42

yourself up out of it? And that's a

  1518. 53:44

question we ask here, which is

  1519. 53:46

    >> what, do, you, watch,, listen, to?, How, when

  1520. 53:48

when you've got Der Blues, as we like to

  1521. 53:51

call it, how do you get up out of it?

  1522. 53:53

What makes you laugh? You know, for me

  1523. 53:55

it is it is a lot of Debbie Downer and

  1524. 53:57

clips. I mean, it is a lot of you

  1525. 53:59

    Rachel.

  1526. 54:00

    >> That's, so, nice.

  1527. 54:01

    >> It, is, you., Like,, you, really, get, me, out

  1528. 54:03

of the dumps. You really do. You're like

  1529. 54:05

an elevator that helps me get up out of

  1530. 54:07

    there. Uh-oh.

  1531. 54:10

    Tears.

  1532. 54:12

Tears. But you really get me way up and

  1533. 54:15

    it's because of the laughter.

  1534. 54:17

    >> You, do, that, for, me.

  1535. 54:19

    [Laughter]

  1536. 54:23

    >> Is, there, anything, else, that, like, you

  1537. 54:25

like to go to to just like

  1538. 54:27

    >> the, bottom, of, a, tequila, bottle?

  1539. 54:31

    I go to the worm.

  1540. 54:32

    >> The, worm.

  1541. 54:35

    >> I, ate, the, worm.

  1542. 54:36

    >> I, ate, the, worm.

  1543. 54:37

    >> That, was, such, an, 80s, thing., Like,, she

  1544. 54:38

    ate the worms.

  1545. 54:39

    >> I, know., Now, there's, no, worms, anymore.

  1546. 54:41

    >> No,, there's, no, worms.

  1547. 54:42

    >> Um,, let's, see., I, forgot, that, you, asked

  1548. 54:44

this and like I feel like I don't have

  1549. 54:47

    like healthy um

  1550. 54:50

    serious

  1551. 54:51

honestly the real thing that elevates me

  1552. 54:53

is like meeting like meeting with

  1553. 54:55

friends out in New York. Like that's

  1554. 54:57

    like that's my honest answer.

  1555. 54:59

    >> Yes., you, like

  1556. 55:00

    >> Mars, nights, and, um, and, like, meeting, with

  1557. 55:04

    my lady friends that's like

  1558. 55:06

    >> because, like, I, feel, like, I, have, this

  1559. 55:07

great you know group various groups of

  1560. 55:10

people but they're all like fun but then

  1561. 55:13

like I love a friend who is really fun

  1562. 55:16

and like sees the joy in life and like

  1563. 55:19

can laugh through like the foibless and

  1564. 55:22

all that but also has the side that's

  1565. 55:24

like you know the amateur psychologist

  1566. 55:27

like you know that we can help each

  1567. 55:29

other out. And if you're if you like I

  1568. 55:31

like if you show up to a friend and you

  1569. 55:33

don't have to be anything other than

  1570. 55:35

what you're feeling cuz like there's

  1571. 55:36

certain friends where you can just do

  1572. 55:38

that. You can come in and you be like

  1573. 55:39

you know, I'm not going to be bringing

  1574. 55:41

my aame and like that's fine. And I like

  1575. 55:44

not having to ex exert extra energy to

  1576. 55:48

pretend I'm like somewhere I'm not. And

  1577. 55:50

    I hope that like

  1578. 55:52

    >> I'm, that, for, other, people, too., But, um

  1579. 55:54

    >> that's, exactly, how, I, described, you, by

  1580. 55:56

the way to Kevin. Exactly that. which is

  1581. 55:59

you are a friend like in good times and

  1582. 56:01

bad in sunny weather and stormy weather

  1583. 56:03

and you just can always show up as the

  1584. 56:05

version of yourself. That's exactly how

  1585. 56:06

    I described you.

  1586. 56:08

    >> Well,, that's, what, I, like, in, others, too.

  1587. 56:10

    So,

  1588. 56:11

    >> um

  1589. 56:12

    >> this, isn't, like, a, joy, thing., This, is

  1590. 56:14

more like a like mind set thing.

  1591. 56:18

    >> No,, like, a, settle, your, mind., Like, I, like

  1592. 56:20

doing, those, word, puzzles, in, the, New York

  1593. 56:21

Times. Like I like that's my like my

  1594. 56:24

like ritual is I do all those cuz it

  1595. 56:26

sort of makes me like forget all the you

  1596. 56:30

can't be like emotional when you're

  1597. 56:31

trying to think of the word.

  1598. 56:32

    >> Well,, I, would, say, as, a, person, that, has

  1599. 56:34

now known you for 30 years has

  1600. 56:35

vacationed with you has you know our

  1601. 56:37

kids are friends like we are in a lot of

  1602. 56:39

different ways in life together that

  1603. 56:42

those kind of like quiet puzzly moments

  1604. 56:45

    is a dr recharge.

  1605. 56:47

    >> Yeah, that, is, a, recharge., Yeah,

  1606. 56:48

    >> because, you, are, a, very, interesting, combo

  1607. 56:50

of introvert, extrovert. Like you are

  1608. 56:52

    very extroverted and especially on

  1609. 56:54

stage, but your everyday like you

  1610. 56:56

    definitely need quiet time.

  1611. 56:59

    >> I, guess, so.

  1612. 57:00

    >> Would, you, say, no?

  1613. 57:00

    >> Yeah., I, don't, know., I, think, I, used, to

  1614. 57:02

need um less of it. I think now I'm a

  1615. 57:05

little more like I just need like the

  1616. 57:07

    the recharge moment. Yeah.

  1617. 57:09

    >> Um, Okay., Kevin, also, had, a, question, too

  1618. 57:11

    that leads us into Broadway.

  1619. 57:13

    >> Okay.

  1620. 57:13

    >> And, um, you, were, in, an, incredible, show

  1621. 57:16

called PUS. tell us about that

  1622. 57:18

experience, what it was like working

  1623. 57:19

with those women and what it was like

  1624. 57:21

    being nominated.

  1625. 57:22

    >> Um,, well,, I, mean, it, was, a, lot, like, it

  1626. 57:26

the mindset of doing it was so it was

  1627. 57:28

this comedy with all women and um I just

  1628. 57:31

got like called up to do this show with

  1629. 57:34

Susan Strowman who I had done a few

  1630. 57:36

readings for and um the part was very

  1631. 57:40

much like the clown in the show. So, I

  1632. 57:42

got to do a lot of like physical just

  1633. 57:43

like make up your own bits and all this

  1634. 57:45

stuff. And um it felt very much like

  1635. 57:47

being back at Second City like in the

  1636. 57:49

best way. And also I love like just I

  1637. 57:52

mean the theater schedule is no joke as

  1638. 57:55

any Broadway person will tell you. But

  1639. 57:57

um cuz you know you have to kind of like

  1640. 57:59

sign your life well like you're not

  1641. 58:00

going out on the weekends all that

  1642. 58:02

stuff. But um the thing that I love

  1643. 58:03

about theater, it's just you and the

  1644. 58:05

audience. Like there's no one saying

  1645. 58:06

like um we think this should go this way

  1646. 58:09

or like like of course there's a

  1647. 58:10

director in developing this part, but

  1648. 58:12

once you're up and running it's just

  1649. 58:14

like that feeling that connection of you

  1650. 58:15

and the audience like and that was like

  1651. 58:18

hearkens back to Second City like oh how

  1652. 58:19

long am I holding this slap or oh if I

  1653. 58:21

do this little tiny thing it gets left

  1654. 58:23

like you don't even I love all that

  1655. 58:24

stuff. So um it was just very freeing

  1656. 58:27

    and fun.

  1657. 58:28

    >> Yeah.

  1658. 58:29

    >> And, and, you, loved, the, women, you, did, it

  1659. 58:31

    with.

  1660. 58:31

    >> Yeah., Yeah., You, guys, became, a, very

  1661. 58:33

desperate group that was all like meshed

  1662. 58:35

really well together. Yeah, it was

  1663. 58:36

    >> And, where, were, you, when, you, got, your

  1664. 58:37

Tony nom for your Broadway debut?

  1665. 58:39

    >> Well,, um, you, know, the, the, nominations

  1666. 58:42

come out like in the morning and you can

  1667. 58:44

just like watch it online. I was just

  1668. 58:46

    like,

  1669. 58:46

    >> "Okay,, I'll, check, this, out.", You, know,

  1670. 58:48

and then like they said my name and then

  1671. 58:50

you know your phone starts going off the

  1672. 58:52

hook. I mean that was something like you

  1673. 58:53

know as a comedian like comedy often

  1674. 58:56

doesn't get like award stuff but all

  1675. 58:59

that to say like I didn't expect like

  1676. 59:01

    getting nominated was never anything

  1677. 59:03

that I thought would be happening when

  1678. 59:06

when you're in comedy you just don't

  1679. 59:07

    really think like

  1680. 59:08

    >> but, the, Tony's, are, an, exception, I, think

  1681. 59:09

the Tony's often do give it up for good

  1682. 59:12

comedic performances that's true I think

  1683. 59:14

they really are like they really respect

  1684. 59:16

    the craft

  1685. 59:18

    >> they, do, the, craft., Yes., So, Kevin, had, a

  1686. 59:21

question about you um uh being like

  1687. 59:23

young Rachel like what were some theater

  1688. 59:28

performers, some musical some shows that

  1689. 59:30

like what were I think his question was

  1690. 59:32

like what are the top three

  1691. 59:35

um pieces of theater uh that you like

  1692. 59:39

really inspired you when you were young

  1693. 59:42

    >> you, know,, like, maybe, scratch, some, little

  1694. 59:44

spark. Well, I guess as mentioned

  1695. 59:46

    Annie,

  1696. 59:47

    >> can, we, just, for, one, second, talk, more

  1697. 59:49

    about Annie? Because Annie

  1698. 59:52

    >> so, many, female, parts,, so, many, parts, for

  1699. 59:54

girls. Like that alone, like a lot of

  1700. 59:56

shows just don't have a lot of parts.

  1701. 59:58

It's like there was you Rachel and I

  1702. 59:59

were both in Once Upon a Mattress.

  1703. 1:00:00

    >> We, were, Amy, had, the, lead, and, I, had, the

  1704. 1:00:02

boring part, but we weren't in the same

  1705. 1:00:04

    production.

  1706. 1:00:05

    >> We, weren't, in, the, same

  1707. 1:00:05

    >> both, of, our, schools., I, was, in, the, sixth

  1708. 1:00:07

grade production. Oh, this is funny

  1709. 1:00:10

though. And Amy was in the high school.

  1710. 1:00:11

    >> Yes., High, schoolction., And, Amy,, if, you

  1711. 1:00:13

know Once on Mattress, Amy played

  1712. 1:00:15

    Wifford, the princess, the clown.

  1713. 1:00:17

    >> The, clown., Yeah., Carol, Bernett

  1714. 1:00:19

    originated on Broadway.

  1715. 1:00:20

    >> Clown., And, I, played, this, character,, Lady

  1716. 1:00:22

Larkin, who's the boring part. But let

  1717. 1:00:26

me also say this that because it was in

  1718. 1:00:29

sixth grade, the only comedic hook that

  1719. 1:00:31

Lady Larkin has is that, well, she's

  1720. 1:00:34

pregnant and so they're in a hurry to

  1721. 1:00:37

get married, you know, cuz they're in

  1722. 1:00:38

the castle. So they need Winterfred to

  1723. 1:00:40

get married. Well, in sixth grade, they

  1724. 1:00:42

take out the pregnancy, of course. So, I

  1725. 1:00:45

had nothing to play. There's no there

  1726. 1:00:48

there. I'm just a lady in waiting.

  1727. 1:00:52

    >> And, I, wasn't, pregnant., By, the, way,, I

  1728. 1:00:54

don't even think I knew that the

  1729. 1:00:56

    original characters, but they changed

  1730. 1:00:57

the lyrics cuz the real lyrics were in a

  1731. 1:01:00

little in a little while you you and I

  1732. 1:01:02

will be one, two, three, four, like

  1733. 1:01:04

kids. And they just like you and I will

  1734. 1:01:06

be together. That's what they changed it

  1735. 1:01:09

to. And you're like, I got nothing to

  1736. 1:01:10

    play.

  1737. 1:01:10

    >> I, got, nothing, to, play.

  1738. 1:01:16

    >> So,, okay., So,, okay., Annie,, of, course., Um

  1739. 1:01:18

or also orphans, you know, orphans. One

  1740. 1:01:22

other thing is with Annie, everyone's

  1741. 1:01:23

like your age. Like literally, if you're

  1742. 1:01:25

    10 and they're 10, you're like, "How do

  1743. 1:01:27

I how do I get in this?" Like that kind

  1744. 1:01:29

    of thing, right?

  1745. 1:01:30

    >> And, and, also, a, dog.

  1746. 1:01:34

    >> A, dog., We, love, a, dog.

  1747. 1:01:36

    >> Did, you, have, the, album?, Oh, my, god., Yeah.

  1748. 1:01:38

Okay. knew every single song and I

  1749. 1:01:40

wanted to play every part and I loved it

  1750. 1:01:42

    so much. Okay, so Annie

  1751. 1:01:43

    >> Okay,, so, Annie, um, then, also, well, of

  1752. 1:01:45

course this is probably the same too um

  1753. 1:01:48

like Gild D Rner, Carol Bernett, Lily

  1754. 1:01:51

    Tomlin. Yes.

  1755. 1:01:53

    >> I, mean,

  1756. 1:01:53

    >> just, those, and, they, were, on, stage, like

  1757. 1:01:55

    they were they were on

  1758. 1:01:56

    >> I, mean, I, only, saw, them, obviously, like, I

  1759. 1:01:58

saw them like I mean when I was really

  1760. 1:02:00

little my parents watched Laughing and I

  1761. 1:02:02

remember Lily Tomlin being Edith Anne in

  1762. 1:02:04

    the giant chair

  1763. 1:02:06

    >> and, that's, the, truth.

  1764. 1:02:08

    Sorry. Um and then um

  1765. 1:02:11

    >> Carol, Bernett, of, course.

  1766. 1:02:12

    >> Yes.

  1767. 1:02:13

    >> And, like, often, times, we, get, asked, till

  1768. 1:02:15

we're blue in the face about women in

  1769. 1:02:17

comedy, right? And like I just think

  1770. 1:02:19

growing up seeing them, you're not

  1771. 1:02:22

thinking like, "Oh, these are women in

  1772. 1:02:24

com." You're just like, "This person's

  1773. 1:02:26

really funny and they're being really

  1774. 1:02:28

brash and bold and they're, you know

  1775. 1:02:31

not afraid to look weird and here she is

  1776. 1:02:34

with the curtains as a dress and just

  1777. 1:02:36

like, you know, she's like the center of

  1778. 1:02:38

it all." and um like you know Gilda Rner

  1779. 1:02:42

making all her faces and everything like

  1780. 1:02:44

    >> so, I, just, think, you're, just, seeing, that

  1781. 1:02:48

and you're not delineating you know and

  1782. 1:02:50

    then like

  1783. 1:02:51

    >> I, mean, the, first, season, of, SNL, that, cast

  1784. 1:02:54

like I did watch like you know John

  1785. 1:02:55

Blushi Steve Martin that's why like when

  1786. 1:02:57

Steve Martin hosted SNL it's like oh my

  1787. 1:02:59

god Steve like I still have that when

  1788. 1:03:01

I'm when I see Steve Martin I'm like

  1789. 1:03:03

when I'm hanging out with Steve Martin

  1790. 1:03:04

no that never happens um not true I've

  1791. 1:03:06

seen it but anyway I think like seeing

  1792. 1:03:09

them um was an influence but not knowing

  1793. 1:03:13

it at the time of course.

  1794. 1:03:15

    >> Um, fame

  1795. 1:03:16

    >> fame, which, of, course, we, all, had, played

  1796. 1:03:20

that on the piano out here on my own.

  1797. 1:03:21

    >> You, can, play, the, piano.

  1798. 1:03:22

    >> No,, but, I, was, like, plunking, it, out, but

  1799. 1:03:24

    out here on my own

  1800. 1:03:25

    >> when, I'm, down

  1801. 1:03:28

everyone wants to hear this. I close my

  1802. 1:03:30

eyes so I can be with you.

  1803. 1:03:34

    >> And, then, what, was, the, third, one?, And

  1804. 1:03:37

    then I would say hair.

  1805. 1:03:39

    >> Hair.

  1806. 1:03:42

    >> Hair.

  1807. 1:03:43

    >> I, don't, think, enough, people, are, talking

  1808. 1:03:45

    about hair these days.

  1809. 1:03:46

    >> No.

  1810. 1:03:46

    >> The, the, musical.

  1811. 1:03:47

    >> No.

  1812. 1:03:49

    >> Hair, was, so, big.

  1813. 1:03:52

like the music and the I think like the

  1814. 1:03:56

    movie

  1815. 1:03:56

    >> the, movie, cuz, that, was, the, first, like, I

  1816. 1:04:00

mean I just remember like excuse me that

  1817. 1:04:04

had like major like tragedy in it and

  1818. 1:04:07

    sadness and

  1819. 1:04:09

    >> but, also, like, yes, I, remember, seeing, that

  1820. 1:04:12

the Lex in a movie theater and um

  1821. 1:04:14

    >> must, have, been, nice

  1822. 1:04:17

we ate gold we ate gold covered popcorn

  1823. 1:04:20

HC had a chandelier here at your own

  1824. 1:04:22

    bar.

  1825. 1:04:22

    >> We, ate, golden, popcorn, and, we, drank

  1826. 1:04:25

champagne. We We showed our movies on

  1827. 1:04:28

    the side of a barn

  1828. 1:04:30

    side of the mall.

  1829. 1:04:32

Side of the dress barn at the mall.

  1830. 1:04:35

That's where we showed our movies.

  1831. 1:04:37

    >> The, dress, band., Oh, my, god.

  1832. 1:04:41

    >> No,, but, I, remember, hair, was, like, like

  1833. 1:04:44

emotional and but also just the music so

  1834. 1:04:47

    good.

  1835. 1:04:48

    >> So, good., I, And, yeah., Anyway,, I, think

  1836. 1:04:51

they like they should do a new

  1837. 1:04:53

production of hair, but there's no parts

  1838. 1:04:56

in it for us. Like it's all new, young.

  1839. 1:04:58

Is there's going to be some like old

  1840. 1:05:00

lady who tells the kids on Get out of

  1841. 1:05:02

Get out of my lawn. No, no. Get out. Get

  1842. 1:05:05

    out of the park.

  1843. 1:05:08

    >> I'm, walking, my, dog.

  1844. 1:05:10

    >> You, should, cut, your, hair.

  1845. 1:05:12

    >> That, could, be, us.

  1846. 1:05:13

    >> Yeah,, that, could, be, us., Or, like, a, a

  1847. 1:05:14

business woman who comes in and goes

  1848. 1:05:16

    "Listen people."

  1849. 1:05:17

    >> Yeah., this, this, bunch, of, hippies, could

  1850. 1:05:20

really make us some money. And they go

  1851. 1:05:21

"Get out of here, lady." That's what I

  1852. 1:05:23

would play. Like a New Yorker who comes

  1853. 1:05:25

    in to ruin the vibe

  1854. 1:05:26

    >> right?, But, you, have, played, so, many

  1855. 1:05:29

different things on on on in like you

  1856. 1:05:32

have played like like you played a man.

  1857. 1:05:34

You played a uh you were we love a Marco

  1858. 1:05:38

Polo cuz we are women of a certain age

  1859. 1:05:39

and we love to marco Polo each other.

  1860. 1:05:41

    >> You, were, Marco, Poloing, me, one, time

  1861. 1:05:43

    wearing a having a mustache. um a

  1862. 1:05:46

    mustache

  1863. 1:05:46

    >> in, a, production, of

  1864. 1:05:49

    >> was, it, anything, goes, or, um, No,, you, were

  1865. 1:05:51

playing Guys and Dolls. Guys and Dolls.

  1866. 1:05:53

    >> You, play?

  1867. 1:05:54

    >> Yes,, I, played, a, dude., Yes.

  1868. 1:05:57

    >> Yeah.

  1869. 1:05:57

    >> But, you've, played, a, lot, of, different

  1870. 1:05:58

    things. I have on stage.

  1871. 1:06:00

    >> Um, well,, I, mean,, as, have, you.

  1872. 1:06:04

    >> We, are, but, the, makers, of, Mary., Um,

  1873. 1:06:10

we are but clowns for your pleasure.

  1874. 1:06:15

    >> We, are, here.

  1875. 1:06:15

    >> We, don't, win, Oscars,, but, we, shall, make

  1876. 1:06:18

you laugh. No, we are here but to be the

  1877. 1:06:20

    fool.

  1878. 1:06:22

    >> We, are, but, we, are, but, fools.

  1879. 1:06:25

    >> Dash, and, I, always, say, if, we, were, back, in

  1880. 1:06:27

those times, we would definitely be not

  1881. 1:06:30

only gestures, but we'd be the

  1882. 1:06:31

    >> Oh,, we'd, be, the, maid.

  1883. 1:06:32

    >> We'd, be, the, maids., Yeah,, we, be, the, maids

  1884. 1:06:35

at the bottom of the castle.

  1885. 1:06:36

    >> Maid, scrubbing, things.

  1886. 1:06:39

    >> I, think, that's, the, role, that, I, think, I'm

  1887. 1:06:41

born to play is like some cuz I would

  1888. 1:06:44

love to do I'm going to put this out

  1889. 1:06:46

there a Broadway thing like a really

  1890. 1:06:48

secret like like a really really funny

  1891. 1:06:51

Broadway thing and maybe I'm playing

  1892. 1:06:52

    this person

  1893. 1:06:54

    >> scrubbing.

  1894. 1:06:55

    >> This, is, my, aspiration

  1895. 1:06:57

    >> for, listen, just, face, scrubbing

  1896. 1:07:00

    >> scrub, on, Broadway., Yeah., I, scrub, my, way

  1897. 1:07:03

    to a Tony.

  1898. 1:07:05

    You listen?

  1899. 1:07:07

You listen, you big mucky mucks.

  1900. 1:07:09

    >> I, had, the, Jonas, Brothers, on, and, we, were

  1901. 1:07:11

singing Lay Miz and they were like, "You

  1902. 1:07:13

would be really good uh in Master of the

  1903. 1:07:16

    House." I was like "I know. I was 20

  1904. 1:07:18

years old. I'd be the old lady of the

  1905. 1:07:20

    house."

  1906. 1:07:21

    >> Oh,, by, the, way,, you, can, cut, this,, but, um

  1907. 1:07:23

but um but I got to audition got to I

  1908. 1:07:26

made the mistake of auditioning for

  1909. 1:07:29

Lamez on Broadway for that part. And I'm

  1910. 1:07:32

like, you know, I can't sing, right? And

  1911. 1:07:34

they're like, just go in. And then I

  1912. 1:07:36

like I even went to like a voice lesson.

  1913. 1:07:39

But like that part is like you really

  1914. 1:07:41

    have to sing.

  1915. 1:07:42

    >> You, really, It's, It's, an, incredible, part

  1916. 1:07:43

and incredible female actors have played

  1917. 1:07:46

it. Incredible um singers, but it and

  1918. 1:07:48

it's definitely the most comedic part of

  1919. 1:07:50

    >> But, you, have, to, have, a, good, voice,, which

  1920. 1:07:52

I like just realized when I was in front

  1921. 1:07:54

of these people in the room just like I

  1922. 1:07:57

mean because they they didn't just give

  1923. 1:07:58

me the master of the house song. There's

  1924. 1:08:00

    another song that's like very

  1925. 1:08:01

    complicated.

  1926. 1:08:02

    >> Yeah.

  1927. 1:08:03

    >> And, I, just, like

  1928. 1:08:05

    >> like, I, sculpt, out

  1929. 1:08:08

    >> I, will, stick, to, making, Mary, without, song

  1930. 1:08:12

    if it please you

  1931. 1:08:14

    >> if, it, pleases, you.

  1932. 1:08:14

    >> I, can't, be, singing, for, the, king, again

  1933. 1:08:17

    for me to not sing.

  1934. 1:08:21

    >> Yes., Ku, is, like, how, do, you, like, your

  1935. 1:08:24

    potatoes?

  1936. 1:08:26

    >> We, could, do, a, duo., We, we, could, do, a, we

  1937. 1:08:29

    could do maids.

  1938. 1:08:31

    >> By, the, way,, that, would, be, a, very, funny

  1939. 1:08:32

idea for shows like you know upstairs

  1940. 1:08:34

downstairs. It just be like called

  1941. 1:08:35

    downstairs

  1942. 1:08:36

    >> and, it's, just, us., Yeah., Yeah., We're, just

  1943. 1:08:38

    like

  1944. 1:08:39

    >> we're, just, washing, clothes

  1945. 1:08:42

    >> and, we, have, dirt, on, our, faces, for, sure.

  1946. 1:08:45

    >> 100%, having, grooves, this, morning.

  1947. 1:08:50

    >> Okay., And, the, last, thing, I, just, wanted

  1948. 1:08:52

to talk about because we talked about it

  1949. 1:08:53

    a little bit is

  1950. 1:08:55

    >> your, wooonness

  1951. 1:08:56

    >> because, we're, going, to, talk, about, your

  1952. 1:08:58

podcast, your great podcast, Woo Woo

  1953. 1:09:00

    which

  1954. 1:09:00

    >> and, Amy, was, a, guest, on, it., One, of, my

  1955. 1:09:02

favorite episodes. You need to listen to

  1956. 1:09:04

    Amy on Woo, my podcast.

  1957. 1:09:05

    >> So, many, great, stories, on, there, and, you

  1958. 1:09:07

have you are very open to psychic uh

  1959. 1:09:11

experiences. You are not judgmental in

  1960. 1:09:13

any way. I would say that.

  1961. 1:09:15

    >> Oh,, that, I'm, not, judgmental., Okay., Yeah.

  1962. 1:09:16

Yeah. Yeah. And you have um I would say

  1963. 1:09:18

you are also a little bit psychic but or

  1964. 1:09:21

you and like you have that channel open.

  1965. 1:09:22

Speaking of channels um what is that woo

  1966. 1:09:25

woo world? So I started this podcast

  1967. 1:09:29

called woo woo and the like I'm not I

  1968. 1:09:32

always say like I'm not really woo woo

  1969. 1:09:33

    cuz I don't like I don't live my life

  1970. 1:09:35

like I got to ask my psychic guy. I

  1971. 1:09:37

don't have a second. But but anyway, I

  1972. 1:09:39

always feel the need to say I know, but

  1973. 1:09:40

I always feel the need to say like I'm

  1974. 1:09:42

not like super woo. But then I started

  1975. 1:09:43

doing this and it's making me definitely

  1976. 1:09:45

making me more woo woo with the stories

  1977. 1:09:47

I'm hearing. But the reason I thought of

  1978. 1:09:48

doing this cuz I just had sort of

  1979. 1:09:49

    collected these stories from friends

  1980. 1:09:51

over the years. And I was like, "Oh

  1981. 1:09:53

these stories are really cool. Would you

  1982. 1:09:55

come on and tell this?" So that's kind

  1983. 1:09:57

of how it started. Um and then you came

  1984. 1:09:59

on, which was really fun. And you're not

  1985. 1:10:01

like a huge woo believer, but you're not

  1986. 1:10:03

like totally shut down. But Amy came on

  1987. 1:10:05

and talked about the anagram, which she

  1988. 1:10:07

    lives her life by.

  1989. 1:10:09

    >> I, mean,

  1990. 1:10:10

    >> for, those, who, care,, Rachel, is, an, inagram

  1991. 1:10:11

    nine, if you haven't noticed.

  1992. 1:10:13

    >> Yeah,

  1993. 1:10:13

    >> the, ultimate, nine.

  1994. 1:10:14

    >> The, ultimate, nine,

  1995. 1:10:15

    >> peacekeeper,

  1996. 1:10:16

    >> peacemaker.

  1997. 1:10:18

    >> Um,, but, uh, but, yeah,, so, I, guess, what

  1998. 1:10:22

else do I say about it?

  1999. 1:10:22

    >> Well,, I, was, going, to, say, that, there's, a

  2000. 1:10:24

couple woo woo things that have happened

  2001. 1:10:26

with us. I feel like a little tiny woo.

  2002. 1:10:28

Most of my woo woo things have happened

  2003. 1:10:29

    with you. Ooh.

  2004. 1:10:30

    >> And, we, were, pregnant, at, the, same, time.

  2005. 1:10:33

Our sons are close in age and I'm happy

  2006. 1:10:35

to say like real friends, which is so

  2007. 1:10:38

great. And we I can remember a very like

  2008. 1:10:41

hot summer where you and I were waddling

  2009. 1:10:43

around the city like both really

  2010. 1:10:46

pregnant. And you can tell from our

  2011. 1:10:48

height like we didn't we carried out

  2012. 1:10:51

front, you know, there's not a lot of.

  2013. 1:10:53

So, I just remember us being like going

  2014. 1:10:54

    to movies, like

  2015. 1:10:57

watching movies because it was so hot

  2016. 1:10:59

out and going to a psychic to talk about

  2017. 1:11:03

um our our our kids. And you brought me

  2018. 1:11:06

to this really cool psychic um who um

  2019. 1:11:10

you know, like just you just have

  2020. 1:11:13

introduced me to a lot of just like give

  2021. 1:11:16

this version of life a try, I guess, is

  2022. 1:11:20

the best way to say it.

  2023. 1:11:22

Yes. It's kind of like why not believe

  2024. 1:11:25

    >> Yes.

  2025. 1:11:26

    >> that, that, thing, was, not, a, coincidence., I

  2026. 1:11:29

    don't know.

  2027. 1:11:30

    >> Yes.

  2028. 1:11:30

    >> Um, I, think, once, you're, It's, almost, like

  2029. 1:11:33

what we're saying about the writing

  2030. 1:11:35

sketches. I think once you're kind of

  2031. 1:11:36

open to it, then you start to

  2032. 1:11:39

    >> see, like, you, just, I, don't, know., I, don't

  2033. 1:11:41

want to say like you get messages or

  2034. 1:11:43

whatever, but I just think the more open

  2035. 1:11:45

you are, the more woo woo you might

  2036. 1:11:47

become. Do you think that like that has

  2037. 1:11:50

anything happened lately that has felt a

  2038. 1:11:52

little like in the woo woo world for

  2039. 1:11:53

    you?

  2040. 1:11:54

    >> Um,, well,, first, of, all,, as, Amy, said, with

  2041. 1:11:55

the pregnancy thing that a a psychic

  2042. 1:11:59

told me that I was going to have a kid

  2043. 1:12:01

    when I was 43 and I wasn't even with

  2044. 1:12:03

anybody and then that happened. So, that

  2045. 1:12:06

was so that was my first like little

  2046. 1:12:07

like this is really strange. But, um

  2047. 1:12:10

    >> yeah,, you, write, about, it, really, well, in

  2048. 1:12:11

your memoir. Um, walks into a bar.

  2049. 1:12:13

    >> Um,, and, uh,, let's, see., I, don't know

  2050. 1:12:16

something lately. I just like to hear

  2051. 1:12:17

your like like is there any vibe you're

  2052. 1:12:20

getting right now? Like what's the vibe

  2053. 1:12:21

of this room? The vibe of this room is

  2054. 1:12:23

    great.

  2055. 1:12:24

    >> It's, good., Okay., Any, ghost, in, this, room?

  2056. 1:12:26

    Outside this room. Not good.

  2057. 1:12:30

    >> Things, are, not, good, once, you, leave, this

  2058. 1:12:32

    room.

  2059. 1:12:32

    >> The, vibes, are, not, good.

  2060. 1:12:38

    >> So, true., But, this, room, is, a, good, hang

  2061. 1:12:42

and it's fun and bright and cheery. But

  2062. 1:12:44

you but I feel like you do that. I mean

  2063. 1:12:47

like you're really fast at being like

  2064. 1:12:48

    this isn't a good vibe. This isn't a

  2065. 1:12:50

good hang. This isn't a good like you're

  2066. 1:12:52

really good at reading people fast or or

  2067. 1:12:55

experience in like rooms or people.

  2068. 1:12:57

    >> Yeah., Yeah., Yeah.

  2069. 1:12:58

    >> You're, like, I, don't, like, that., I, don't

  2070. 1:12:59

get a good feeling from that.

  2071. 1:13:01

    >> Yeah., And, and, I, started, to, like, again

  2072. 1:13:02

older I get like listen to that like if

  2073. 1:13:05

you're if you're if you get that feeling

  2074. 1:13:06

of like h like you're allowed to not

  2075. 1:13:11

hang, there, or, whatever., I, don't know.

  2076. 1:13:12

    >> And, last, question., Uh,, are, you, afraid, of

  2077. 1:13:14

zombies? Would you in a zombie movie?

  2078. 1:13:17

What? How would you This is my new

  2079. 1:13:18

question. I'm just I'm just thinking

  2080. 1:13:19

about it right now, but maybe I'll ask

  2081. 1:13:20

people moving forward because Dr. always

  2082. 1:13:23

    inspiring me.

  2083. 1:13:23

    >> I, might, just, freeze., Is, that, what, you're

  2084. 1:13:25

about I think you're about to say.

  2085. 1:13:27

    >> Well,, I, was, going, to, say, it, kind, of, gets

  2086. 1:13:28

    into like conflict styles.

  2087. 1:13:30

    >> Oh, gosh., Yeah.

  2088. 1:13:31

    >> But, it, is

  2089. 1:13:32

    >> sometimes, I, think, I, think, with, conflict

  2090. 1:13:34

    I freeze.

  2091. 1:13:35

    >> Mhm.

  2092. 1:13:36

    >> Which, isn't, always, the, bad, choice., You

  2093. 1:13:38

don't like you're not fanning the

  2094. 1:13:40

    >> I, just, noticed, it, about, myself, though.

  2095. 1:13:42

    M.

  2096. 1:13:42

    >> So, if, zombies, were, coming,, I', I, guess

  2097. 1:13:44

    I'd freeze.

  2098. 1:13:45

    >> You'd, turn, into, a, statue.

  2099. 1:13:46

    >> Yes.

  2100. 1:13:47

    >> And, you'd, hope, that, they, went, by.

  2101. 1:13:48

    >> We, can't, end, on, this, note., We, can't.

  2102. 1:13:50

    We're going to cut this.

  2103. 1:13:53

    >> We, can't.

  2104. 1:13:55

Let's sing the song from Chadwicks.

  2105. 1:13:58

    >> Oh,, okay., The, chant.

  2106. 1:13:59

    >> So, Chadwick, was, an, ice, cream, place, that

  2107. 1:14:01

    Dret and I worked at.

  2108. 1:14:03

    >> Not, at, the, same, time.

  2109. 1:14:04

    >> Not, at, the, same, time., But, I, I, have, to

  2110. 1:14:05

say probably the highest percentage of

  2111. 1:14:06

SNL people from any ice cream place.

  2112. 1:14:08

    >> Probably, two., Yeah., And, um

  2113. 1:14:10

    >> it, was a, purple, building.

  2114. 1:14:12

    >> Okay., I'm, going, to, put, I'm, going to, do, a

  2115. 1:14:13

lip balm break before we sing. Do you

  2116. 1:14:14

    want Do you need any?

  2117. 1:14:15

    >> No,, I, think, I'm, okay.

  2118. 1:14:16

    >> Okay., Um, so, it, was, a, purple, building.

  2119. 1:14:19

    >> Purple, building, ice, cream.

  2120. 1:14:20

    >> You, had, to, wear, styrofoam, barber, shop

  2121. 1:14:22

    quartet hat.

  2122. 1:14:23

    >> You, had, to, we, alt, often, had, a, kazoo.

  2123. 1:14:26

    >> We, often, had, a, kazoo., And, I, feel, like, we

  2124. 1:14:28

were both attracted to the drama and the

  2125. 1:14:30

    showmanship.

  2126. 1:14:31

    >> The, show, not, drama., The, showmanship, of

  2127. 1:14:34

Chadwicks because when it was someone's

  2128. 1:14:35

birthday, you got a free Sunday.

  2129. 1:14:36

    >> Yeah.

  2130. 1:14:37

    >> And, um, they, did, not, check., So, people

  2131. 1:14:39

came in a lot with birthday Sundays. But

  2132. 1:14:42

    then there was a

  2133. 1:14:44

    >> a, little, chant, birthday, chant, they, did

  2134. 1:14:47

and it went something like this.

  2135. 1:14:49

    >> Ladies, and, gentlemen,, we're, happy, to

  2136. 1:14:51

have you here at Chadwick today, but

  2137. 1:14:52

we're especially happy to have Amy

  2138. 1:14:56

because she came here to celebrate her

  2139. 1:14:58

birthday. So, at the sound of the drum

  2140. 1:15:01

please join in singing Amy a loud

  2141. 1:15:04

    embarrassing

  2142. 1:15:06

    happy birthday.

  2143. 1:15:08

    >> Then, they, would, order, a, giant, ice, cream.

  2144. 1:15:10

And it was called the belly buster.

  2145. 1:15:12

    >> And, it, was, carried, out, by, two, two, men

  2146. 1:15:16

holding a stretcher thing with a big

  2147. 1:15:19

bowl in the middle of it that had Oh

  2148. 1:15:21

and then this was a separate thing. If

  2149. 1:15:23

you ordered the belly buster, there was

  2150. 1:15:24

an announcement for the belly buster and

  2151. 1:15:26

it went something like this. Ladies and

  2152. 1:15:28

gentlemen, we're happy to have you here

  2153. 1:15:30

    at Chadwick today

  2154. 1:15:32

to introduce you to the Belly Buster.

  2155. 1:15:37

    >> 10, scoops, of, ice, cream,, five, different

  2156. 1:15:40

toppings, mounds and mounds of whipped

  2157. 1:15:42

cream, cherries and nuts, Chadwick's own

  2158. 1:15:45

belly buster, and then we'd like do like

  2159. 1:15:47

    drum drum.

  2160. 1:15:50

And then the two guys would come up, the

  2161. 1:15:51

thing in the stretch are like pretending

  2162. 1:15:53

to struggle under its weight. And then

  2163. 1:15:56

it would land at the table. And if you

  2164. 1:15:58

ate, rumor had it, the lore was that if

  2165. 1:16:00

you ate the belly buster by yourself

  2166. 1:16:02

    you got it for free.

  2167. 1:16:04

    >> That's, right., Do, you, remember, that?

  2168. 1:16:05

    >> Yep., And, there, used, to, be, like, teen, boys

  2169. 1:16:07

    >> vomiting.

  2170. 1:16:08

    >> Vomiting, and, drinking, the, ice, cream

  2171. 1:16:10

    juice

  2172. 1:16:11

    >> in, an, attempt, to, get, it, done, in, time.

  2173. 1:16:13

    >> Yeah., The, vomit, was, separate, from, the

  2174. 1:16:15

    ice cream juice.

  2175. 1:16:15

    >> Yeah., Yeah., Yeah., The, teen, boys, were

  2176. 1:16:17

trying to get it done and I I don't

  2177. 1:16:19

think I ever saw it happen.

  2178. 1:16:20

    >> I, don't, think, I, did, either,

  2179. 1:16:21

    >> Laura., But, Laura, says, it, happened.

  2180. 1:16:22

    >> Now, Chadwick, no, longer, exists.

  2181. 1:16:24

    >> Nope., It's, uh, just, a, in, a, landfill

  2182. 1:16:26

    filled with ghosts.

  2183. 1:16:28

    >> We, just, did, an, interview, for, my, podcast.

  2184. 1:16:31

    >> The, ghost, of, Chad, Wix.

  2185. 1:16:35

    >> But, that's, a, good, ending., That's, a, good

  2186. 1:16:37

    ending.

  2187. 1:16:37

    >> That, is, okay., Okay.

  2188. 1:16:39

    >> Love, you,, Drewie.

  2189. 1:16:40

    >> Love, you., This, was, fun.

  2190. 1:16:42

    >> So, fun., Thanks, for, doing, it,, buddy., And

  2191. 1:16:44

thank you again. I really do owe you a

  2192. 1:16:46

lot. Always in my life and in on this

  2193. 1:16:48

show. So come back anytime and bring

  2194. 1:16:50

    your headphones always.

  2195. 1:16:52

    >> Hold, on., Well,, we're, going, to, wrap, it

  2196. 1:16:54

    up.

  2197. 1:16:54

    >> Okay,, there., Well,, now, they're, clean.

  2198. 1:16:56

    >> Oh,, well,, we, still, can't, get, them.

  2199. 1:16:58

    >> This, isn't, a, good, ending., Okay.

  2200. 1:16:59

    >> Well,, it's, It, is, still, hard, for, you, to

  2201. 1:17:00

    get them on, though.

  2202. 1:17:01

    >> Okay,

  2203. 1:17:01

    >> here, we, go., And

  2204. 1:17:08

    >> what, the, Oh,, here, we, go.

  2205. 1:17:13

    Nailed it. Dra out.

  2206. 1:17:17

Thank you, Dr. You are the best. My baby

  2207. 1:17:19

Droo, my little Ray Ray. Um, thank you

  2208. 1:17:23

    for coming on. And, um

  2209. 1:17:26

you know, we talked a lot about a lot of

  2210. 1:17:28

things. You know, the idea that, you

  2211. 1:17:30

know, life can be a a series of

  2212. 1:17:33

    interesting and unexplainable events

  2213. 1:17:36

and, uh, it can be really woowoo if you

  2214. 1:17:38

let it. And so, um, as part of this

  2215. 1:17:40

polar plunge, I do want to just remind

  2216. 1:17:42

everyone to check out Rachel Drach's

  2217. 1:17:44

podcast, Woo Woo. Um, her and her

  2218. 1:17:46

co-host, Irene, um, they, uh, listen to

  2219. 1:17:50

    people's

  2220. 1:17:51

    interesting ghosty spooky stories. They

  2221. 1:17:54

get into uh that that um those chills

  2222. 1:17:58

that you get when something weird or

  2223. 1:18:00

unexplainable happens. And so uh check

  2224. 1:18:02

out that podcast. I um have gone on the

  2225. 1:18:05

podcast and I have said um that I've

  2226. 1:18:08

never seen a ghost and um I'd like to

  2227. 1:18:11

keep it that way. So I'm fine with that.

  2228. 1:18:13

Um but if you have seen a ghost, contact

  2229. 1:18:16

Woo Woo and not me, okay? Um, but good

  2230. 1:18:20

for you and um it's not a competition

  2231. 1:18:22

but um I am glad I uh I didn't. Um okay

  2232. 1:18:26

    thanks for listening. Bye.
