Aziz Ansari on Good Hang with Amy Poehler
The Hang, in Short
Amy and Rashida Jones get hilariously relatable about language envy before they even get to Aziz. When Rashida mentions Aziz's perfect Japanese accent (so good he tricks people into thinking he's fluent), she admits whenever she hears about someone speaking another language, she just feels bad about herself. Amy immediately jumps in with "fire of envy, same." They then try to make themselves feel better by remembering Rashida studied French. For a month. The rest is pure Amy and Rashida vibes: declaring "functional flat front fall" as their seasonal fashion theme, reminiscing about Parks and Rec as "the education of Aziz," and gushing about how he cooks Rashida dinner all the time, including chicken 65, a bright red Indian dish made specifically for children. They also have technical difficulties. Amy buys herself long thin tongs to stay motivated in the kitchen.

This is a disaster.
- 1:46

>> Um,, how, are, you, guys, over, there?
- 1:50
>> Am, I, Am, I, the, over, there?, Oh., Oh., Oh,, I
- 1:54
can look at your face now. Yay.
- 1:56
>> Oh,, you, couldn't, see, me, before.
- 1:58
>> It, was, a, side, view.
- 2:00
>> Oh,, no., That's, a, terrible, view.
- 2:03
>> No,, it, was, great., It, was, great., This, is
- 2:05
just more direct and intimate.
- 2:06
>> Bones.
- 2:08
>> Polo.
- 2:09
>> We, just, had, a, a a, tech, fiasco.
- 2:12
>> Fiasco., We, had, a, snafu.
- 2:15
>> I, mean,, it, still, is, a, miracle, that, you
- 2:17
can talk to each other in live time.
- 2:20
>> Yeah.
- 2:21
>> Like, across, regions., So,, I'm, going, to
- 2:23
I'm going to stick with that story.
- 2:25
>> I, still, can't, believe, that, we, have
- 2:26
airplanes.
- 2:28
>> Exactly., Exactly., So,, there, you, go.
- 2:33
This is a miracle. Our meeting today is
- 2:35
a miracle.
- 2:35
>> Where, are, we, talking, to, you, from, right
- 2:37
now? I'm in my f I know the s every time
- 2:40
I talk to you I feel like I'm I'm in my
- 2:43
friend's sitting room.
- 2:45
>> Okay.
- 2:46
>> In, London.
- 2:47
>> Well,, what, makes, a, sitting, room?, What's
- 2:49
a sitting room?
- 2:50
>> Good, question., Lots, of, places, to, sit.
- 2:53
>> And, and, and, kind, of, no, other
- 2:54
functionality like where you're just
- 2:56
kind of sitting and staring at each
- 2:58
other, you know?
- 2:59
>> You're, in, London.
- 3:01
>> I'm, in, London.
- 3:02
>> Ah,, I, miss, you,, friend.
- 3:05
>> I, miss, you,, too., I'm, talking, to, Aziz
- 3:08
today and I'm having a lot of um I'm
- 3:11
having a lot of nostalgic feelings
- 3:13
today.
- 3:14
>> I, feel, that, I, really, miss, I, really, miss
- 3:17
us as a as a cast.
- 3:20
>> Same., And, I, and, I, kind, of, feel, like, we
- 3:22
are his aunties a little bit. We are
- 3:24
definitely
- 3:25
>> totally
- 3:26
>> you, you, especially, um, but
- 3:28
>> it, was, the, education, of, Aziz, I'm, sorry
- 3:30
was sort of like the alternate title for
- 3:32
parks and recreation. I know him and
- 3:34
Plaza feel like they were babies. Even
- 3:38
our babies, they were our babies that we
- 3:40
raised.
- 3:43
>> Our, beautiful, family,, the, four, of, us.
- 3:46
>> Before, we, get, to, Aziz,, who, like, you,, I
- 3:49
think has a like a very specific
- 3:52
cultured aesthetic. I'm loving the color
- 3:55
brown that you're wearing.
- 3:56
>> Thank, you, so, much., Because, I, this
- 4:00
somebody told me they didn't like this
- 4:01
color. I don't remember who it was. And
- 4:02
I was like, I do. I don't know why. It's
- 4:06
like very 70s to me.
- 4:07
>> And, I, was, want, I, was, wondering, what, you
- 4:09
think the color of the of the color of
- 4:12
fall is. I always ask Rashidita these
- 4:15
questions cuz she knows. She's in the
- 4:16
know.
- 4:17
>> Well,, there's, a, there's, a, palette, cuz
- 4:19
you know like when you have you ever
- 4:21
done your makeup test where you're like
- 4:23
an autumn or spring or summer?
- 4:25
>> Yeah,, I, think, we, autumn., You, are, such, an
- 4:27
autumn.
- 4:28
>> I, think, you're, you're, a, summer., I, think
- 4:30
>> I, I, think, I, think, you're, right., And, I
- 4:32
very I wanted very much to be a winter.
- 4:35
It's kind of the story of my life.
- 4:36
>> I, love, summer, polos., But, you, love
- 4:38
summer.
- 4:38
>> I, do., But, the, colors, feel, a, little, um, I
- 4:42
don't know, not substantial, like
- 4:43
>> too, playful.
- 4:44
>> Yeah., They, feel, a, little, um, juvenile
- 4:48
>> and, I, want, to,, you, know,, and, I, remember
- 4:49
looking at the palette and saying, I
- 4:50
think I'm a winter. And then Tik Tok
- 4:52
said, no way.
- 4:54
>> No,, ma'am.
- 4:55
>> They, said, blondie, is, not, allowed.
- 4:58
But okay, so that's an autominal color
- 5:00
that you've got going on.
- 5:02
>> This, I, would, say, like, an, olive, green,, a
- 5:05
wine, like a merllo color is very the
- 5:08
color of autumn. Maybe even like a
- 5:10
mustard as an accent.
- 5:11
>> I, can't, even, get, anywhere, near, those
- 5:13
colors. They do not work for me. And
- 5:15
with that in mind, what do you think is
- 5:17
the uh the fashion of the of the season?
- 5:22
What what should we be wearing?
- 5:24
>> Okay.
- 5:25
>> So, people, should, know., Yeah., So,, every
- 5:28
season Rashidita and I and um we we try
- 5:32
to like name how we're going to dress
- 5:34
basically and
- 5:36
>> and, it's, and, it's, it's, steeped, in, either
- 5:38
like a country or a vibe or or like a
- 5:43
trend or or like an anti-trend.
- 5:46
>> What, have, been, some, past, ways, that, we
- 5:48
have we've got we've we've named the
- 5:51
seasons? I can think of a few. Um, high
- 5:55
school art teacher.
- 5:56
>> High, school, art, teacher., Japanese
- 5:59
winter.
- 6:00
>> Tired, ballerina.
- 6:01
>> Tired, ballerina.
- 6:05
What's the last one that would just that
- 6:06
we kind of found from Tik Tok? It was
- 6:08
like frugal chic.
- 6:10
>> Frugal, chic., Frugal, chic., Right.
- 6:13
>> Like, make, your, own, salads,, bring, them, to
- 6:15
work, wear the same like gorgeous
- 6:17
sweater every day.
- 6:18
>> Shop, your, closet., Shop, your, closet.
- 6:20
>> Closet., Mhm., Um,, what, do, we, think, is
- 6:23
happening this fall?
- 6:24
>> What, about, just, like, a, double, f, like
- 6:26
functional fall or like
- 6:28
>> Ooh,
- 6:29
>> I, was, just, in, Paris,, which, of, course
- 6:31
always the fashion so good in Paris and
- 6:34
the way that like girls wear trousers
- 6:37
like it just is it's hard to describe
- 6:40
why they look so much better on them
- 6:42
than anybody else, but there's like
- 6:43
always like a front Oh, maybe it's front
- 6:45
pleet fall.
- 6:47
>> Okay,, you, know, what?, Jenzie, loves, their
- 6:50
front pleat. I know.
- 6:52
>> I, don't, need, any, more, help, down, there, to
- 6:54
feel full.
- 6:55
>> No, more, pleats, in, the, front., Agreed.
- 6:58
Agreed. Okay.
- 7:00
Functional flat front.
- 7:01
>> Functional, flat, front, ball.
- 7:04
>> Okay., You, heard, it, here, first,, guys.
- 7:07
Hashtag trending. Okay. You know, we
- 7:09
always like to talk well behind our
- 7:11
guests back about our guest. What do you
- 7:14
love about Aziz? I'm sorry. Aziz is um
- 7:18
he's a very insatiably curious human
- 7:22
being. He loves to absorb
- 7:27
art food fashion film
- 7:32
traveling. Like he's just he's so open
- 7:36
to experience and I love people who are
- 7:38
like that.
- 7:39
>> I, would, say, that, you're, like, that, too.
- 7:41
And then of course like he's just so
- 7:44
funny and I always want his take on
- 7:46
something um that makes it uh he's a
- 7:51
pleasure to be around in that way.
- 7:53
>> Yeah., What, um, I, feel, like, you, have, you
- 7:56
two have probably gone and done some
- 7:58
groovy things together like
- 8:02
>> we've, been, in, a, lot, of, countries
- 8:04
together.
- 8:04
>> Yeah.
- 8:05
>> Yeah., And, I, love, being, in, Japan, with
- 8:09
Aziz because he'll he'll just he'll just
- 8:12
bust out like the best accent and just
- 8:15
order in Japanese like a full perfect
- 8:18
accent. Yes
- 8:19
>> he, speaks, Japanese.
- 8:21
>> Yes,, a, little, bit., But, it's, his, accent's
- 8:23
so good that he convinces people that
- 8:25
he's
- 8:26
>> can, like, speak, fluently, because, his
- 8:28
accent's so good.
- 8:29
>> Whoa,, that's, cool.
- 8:31
>> Yeah,, very, cool., Is, it, weird, that, every
- 8:34
time I hear about other people speaking
- 8:36
another language, it I just feel so bad
- 8:40
that I don't like I make it about
- 8:41
myself.
- 8:42
>> Fire, of, jeal, fire, of, envy., Same.
- 8:44
>> Well,, people, should, know, that, you
- 8:46
studied French for a while
- 8:48
>> and
- 8:48
>> a, month,
- 8:49
>> babe., A, month, more, than, other, people,
- 8:51
honey.
- 8:53
>> Okay., So,, um,, what, question, do, you, have
- 8:56
for our guest Aziz today? What do you
- 8:58
think I should ask Aziz? Anything you
- 9:00
want to know? Yeah, I was, you know, I
- 9:02
was thinking about something that would
- 9:04
light him up that he'd want to talk
- 9:06
about. Um, and again, as we mentioned
- 9:09
is he's an extremely cultured individual
- 9:11
and, you know, there's probably stuff
- 9:13
that people don't really know about him.
- 9:17
One thing is that he's an excellent chef
- 9:19
and also he loves food. So, A, what's
- 9:23
his favorite thing to cook? And B
- 9:25
what's his favorite thing to eat?
- 9:27
>> Love, that., Love, that., Has, he, ever, made
- 9:30
anything for you?
- 9:31
>> All, the, time., He, cooks, me, dinner, all, the
- 9:33
time.
- 9:35
Everything. My My recent favorite is he
- 9:38
makes this thing. It's like it's an
- 9:39
Indian dish that's specifically for
- 9:42
children. So, I love it. Uh called
- 9:44
chicken 65. And it it's it's bright red
- 9:48
because of the like the pepper powder.
- 9:51
And it's delicious.
- 9:53
>> Yum.
- 9:54
>> Yeah.
- 9:55
>> Ooh., I, want, to, talk, to, him, about, that.
- 9:57
And I want to talk about kitchen gadgets
- 9:59
in general. Oh
- 10:00
>> I, just, got, for, myself,, I, like, to, every
- 10:02
once in a while get myself a kitchen
- 10:04
gadget so that I can continue to uh
- 10:06
encourage myself to cook. I just got
- 10:09
really long thin tongs like
- 10:12
>> not, your, not, your, grabby, tongs,, but
- 10:14
those long ones that you where you can
- 10:16
turn a delicate a delicate mushroom.
- 10:18
>> Wow.
- 10:19
>> I, wish, we, were, hanging, out, together
- 10:21
right now.
- 10:22
>> I, miss, you.
- 10:23
>> I, miss, you,, too.
- 10:24
>> I, really, want, to, do, a, Tik, Tok, dance, with
- 10:26
you. Oh yeah. Um listeners, Rashidita
- 10:28
sent me a Tik Tok dance um and said, "I
- 10:30
wish we were learning this together."
- 10:31
And I watched it and I was like I I
- 10:34
don't think I'd be able to learn it. It
- 10:35
seems
- 10:36
>> 100%, could, do, that.
- 10:38
>> It, looks, so, cool, cuz, they're, such, good
- 10:40
dancers, but it's very simple steps.
- 10:42
>> You, know,, no, one, is, a, bigger, fan., Could
- 10:45
you do the Tik Tok dance and send it
- 10:47
>> by, myself?, I, will., I'll, send, it, to, you.
- 10:49
I'll send it to you. Just don't show
- 10:50
anybody. I will send it to you.
- 10:52
>> Do, that, thing, where, you, make, yourself, a
- 10:54
three people. You know how you can do an
- 10:55
effect where you can look like three
- 10:57
people?
- 10:58
>> Yes,
- 10:59
>> let's, do, that., Let's, add
- 11:00
>> That's, maybe, your, team, after, they, fix
- 11:02
your audio issues can help me do that.
- 11:04
>> Yeah,, we're, going, to, split, this, into
- 11:05
three
- 11:07
>> and, you're, going, to, be, your, own, backup
- 11:08
singer.
- 11:09
>> I'd, love, that., Best, career.
- 11:12
>> Thank, you,, Bones,, for, doing, this., Miss
- 11:15
>> you., Miss, you, so, much, and, love, you, and
- 11:17
have fun with
- 11:18
>> Aziz, Zezers., Baby, Zezy,
- 11:21
>> as, I, call, them,, baby, Zezy.
- 11:22
>> All, right., Thanks,, friend., Love, you.
- 11:24
Love you, too.
- 11:26

- 12:59
>> Yeah,, we're, on., Oh,, wa., Okay,, good., I'm
- 13:02
glad I didn't drop any racial slurs as I
- 13:05
tend to do when I when I usually see
- 13:07
when you see me right away. We usually
- 13:09
So, what's your favorite right now? And
- 13:10
then I say my favorite and then we start
- 13:13
hanging out. Yeah. So, God, thank
- 13:15
goodness we dropped that tradition.
- 13:16
>> True., Yeah., No,, we're, rolling., And, all
- 13:18
we've been talking about is New York in
- 13:21
the fall.
- 13:22
That's it. New York in the fall, baby.
- 13:26
>> But, do, when, you, come, here,, do, you, get
- 13:27
like um do you ever want to live here?
- 13:30
Well, you still spend time here.
- 13:32
>> I, Yeah,, I, I, feel, like, I, don't, live
- 13:33
anywhere. I'm always just running
- 13:35
around. But whenever I come like
- 13:36
visiting New York is fun because you you
- 13:39
come for and you get a quick hit. You do
- 13:40
all your favorite stuff. You see all
- 13:42
your friends and then and but if I
- 13:44
stayed too long it's too crazy. I'm too
- 13:46
too old now.
- 13:46
>> Yeah,, I, know what, you, mean., It's, it, it
- 13:48
is.
- 13:48
>> Your, little, Zezy, is, all, grown, up.
- 13:49
>> I, know., My, Zezy, is, just, a, He's, an, old
- 13:53
man now.
- 13:53
>> I, know., If, you, watch, if, whenever, I, see
- 13:56
old parks things I was like I didn't
- 13:57
know that me and Aubrey did a show when
- 13:59
we were little kids. Like it's really
- 14:02
>> I, know., How, old, were, you, when, you
- 14:04
started on the show?
- 14:04
>> I, was, 13, in, season
- 14:07
and then when we finished I just turned
- 14:09
18. I I got my driver's license like in
- 14:12
the middle of the run.
- 14:13
>> A, lot, of, people, don't, know, that, you, were
- 14:14
18 when you were playing Tom Hammerford
- 14:16
on Parks and W.
- 14:17
>> Yeah,
- 14:17
>> it, is, true, though., It, is., You, You, look
- 14:20
like a baby. You were a baby.
- 14:24
>> I, didn't, know, anything., I, The, first
- 14:26
seasons I I didn't know how to act or
- 14:28
anything. I should not have been on
- 14:30
television. NBC should be like, "We got
- 14:31
to get Is there any Indian guy that's
- 14:33
done more acting that we can outplay
- 14:35
this guy?"
- 14:36
>> We, want, I, want, to, get, into, this,, too,
- 14:37
because it is it feels like when we we
- 14:40
we've met each other throughout like
- 14:43
we've we've in a bunch of different ways
- 14:45
in a bunch of different places, but New
- 14:47
York City, I will say, feels like, and I
- 14:50
don't, know if, you, feel, this, way, when, you
- 14:52
come here, that you are reminded of when
- 14:54
you were young. Mhm.
- 14:55
>> There, is, a, feeling, here, like, if, you, were
- 14:57
here when you were young, when you come
- 14:58
back you feel younger or something. You
- 15:01
remember your younger self.
- 15:02
>> You, you're, trying, to, get, back, that
- 15:04
energy. You remember you you remember
- 15:05
being outlaid and all this kind of stuff
- 15:07
and and uh
- 15:09
>> cuz, you, were, an, NYU, kid.
- 15:11
>> I, went, to, NYU, and, I, started, doing, comedy
- 15:13
then.
- 15:14
>> Were, you, doing, comedy, like, in, high
- 15:15
school or
- 15:16
>> No,, I, grew, up, in, South, Carolina, so, I, you
- 15:19
know there was no outlet for anything
- 15:21
like that. You know, it was like, you
- 15:23
know, you could dip and and
- 15:27
>> spit, into, a, mountain.
- 15:28
>> You, can, spit, into, a, cup, and, everyone
- 15:30
laugh.
- 15:30
>> Spit, into, a, I, just, drank, Mountain, Dew
- 15:32
and did. That's all I did in high
- 15:33
school.
- 15:34
>> And, did, you, ever, play, four-wheelers?
- 15:36
>> Were, you, in, a, play, at
- 15:38
>> I, was, in, plays, when, I, was, a, kid., I
- 15:40
remember there was some play I did and
- 15:43
uh I don't know what the play was, but I
- 15:45
played like a a cowboy and I was doing
- 15:47
like a big southern accent and I
- 15:49
remember I just crushed and kids were
- 15:51
coming up to me afterwards like that do
- 15:52
it again and and I it was like one of
- 15:55
those things I remember.
- 15:55
>> So, were, you, a, funny, kid?
- 15:57
>> Yeah,, I, like, to, be, funny, in, class, and
- 15:59
and um
- 16:01
>> yeah,, anytime, there, was, anything, that
- 16:03
involved public speaking or something, I
- 16:05
was always super comfortable. Mhm.
- 16:07
>> Um, I, remember, when, I, did, like, something
- 16:09
where I was like 6 years old, I had to
- 16:10
like speak in front of the whole school
- 16:12
and it didn't like phase me at all. I
- 16:13
don't know why.
- 16:14
>> It's, so, funny.
- 16:15
>> Yeah,, because, Okay,, so, when, I, was, in
- 16:17
school in South Carolina, right, this is
- 16:19
in, the, ' 80s., So,, you, know,
- 16:21
>> a, lot, of, these, people, had, never, even
- 16:22
seen Indian people before and I I
- 16:26
skipped first grade. I did skip first
- 16:28
grade and second grade. like in the
- 16:29
middle of first grade, they call my
- 16:31
parents and they're like, "Uh, we we got
- 16:35
to get him out of here. He's too smart.
- 16:37
He already knows all this stuff. I don't
- 16:39
know if it's this this other culture
- 16:41
you're from or what's happening, but we
- 16:43
got to get him the [ __ ] out of this
- 16:44
first grade thing. He needs to go to
- 16:46
second now.
- 16:47
>> Get, him, out, of, my, class., He's
- 16:49
embarrassing everyone else."
- 16:50
>> And, then, I, went, there, and, uh, I, went, to
- 16:53
second grade and it is a little school.
- 16:56
So like I'm like, you know, and there's
- 16:58
like 30 kids in each class. I grew up in
- 16:59
a town of like 8,000 people. So they're
- 17:01
like, "Oh, this this little this little
- 17:03
brown wonder kid." And so like I'm on
- 17:05
the radio and all this
- 17:08
radio and there is there's a there's a
- 17:11
recording somewhere and when I was a
- 17:13
little kid I I had like a southern
- 17:16
accent because that's where I grew up
- 17:18
and that's where I'm around. So I I I
- 17:20
vaguely remember being being on on some
- 17:23
radio program and I was like, "My name's
- 17:25
Aziz. Sorry. And I'm a first grader at
- 17:27
Marbor Academy.
- 17:28
>> When, you're, told, at, six, that, you're, a
- 17:30
smart kid, then you become the smart
- 17:32
kid. Were you the smart kid?
- 17:34
>> I, think, so., But, I, think, it, kind, of
- 17:36
annoyed me in a way. Like I I I like I
- 17:39
didn't want to be painted with a certain
- 17:41
brush., You, know what, I, mean?
- 17:42
>> Yeah., Yeah., I, bet., I, bet, people, are, just
- 17:44
projecting a lot of stuff on you.
- 17:46
>> And, then, I, went, to, the, school, in, 11th
- 17:47
and 12th grade which is in like a
- 17:49
science and math school. And uh it's a
- 17:52
public school in South Carolina called
- 17:54
the Governor's School. And there it's
- 17:56
like all the smartest kids from all over
- 17:58
South Carolina. And there I was just
- 18:00
like this dumb kid that was like smoking
- 18:03
weed and telling dumb stories.
- 18:05
>> And, they, were, like,, "What, happened?, I
- 18:06
thought you skipped first grade."
- 18:08
>> Yeah., 11th, grade., You, should, go, back, to
- 18:10
10
- 18:10
>> expecting., But, yeah,, they, they, kicked
- 18:12
you back down.
- 18:13
>> Yeah., Yeah,, I, mean, it, it, it, we, talked, a
- 18:15
lot about it when we first met like this
- 18:16
idea of growing up in South Carolina in
- 18:19
the 80s as a young Indian boy, one of
- 18:22
probably the only in your class figuring
- 18:25
out
- 18:25
>> de, not, one, one, of, the, there, there, were
- 18:27
in in like first and second grade I
- 18:29
sometimes forget this there there was
- 18:31
this Tai girl her name was Tisha
- 18:35
which does not sound like a Thai name
- 18:38
and they used to always be like what's
- 18:39
up with you and Tisha? I'm not kidding.
- 18:42
I remember there was a play in like
- 18:43
first grade. There was like it was a
- 18:45
play and for some reason there was
- 18:47
Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse and it was
- 18:49
me and Tisha. We were the stars, you
- 18:51
know. Oh. Oh, diversity. No, no. Me and
- 18:53
Tisha in Bennettville in like 1988.
- 18:57
Leads
- 18:59
>> leads, of, this, mysterious, play, where
- 19:02
there's Mickey and Minnie Mouse, but
- 19:03
there was always like, oh, you know
- 19:05
>> were, you, excited, in, a, way, to, expand, your
- 19:07
horizons and go to New York?
- 19:10
Yeah, I I I I had always it's so
- 19:12
interesting. I was thinking about this
- 19:13
you know, the fact that my dad left, you
- 19:16
know, my family is all from the southern
- 19:19
tip of India up until me and my dad left
- 19:24
India and went to uh like he first came
- 19:27
to Jersey and he was doing like you know
- 19:29
residency or whatever and I I you know
- 19:32
it really I was thinking about this a
- 19:33
couple weeks ago is how remarkable it
- 19:34
was and how scary that must have been to
- 19:36
come over there and not know anything.
- 19:38
you know, this is before internet
- 19:39
FaceTime, nothing. If you're there
- 19:41
you're really gone. And uh same with my
- 19:44
mom as well. And And
- 19:45
>> did, they, come, over, together?
- 19:47
>> My, dad, came, first, and, then, my, mom, came
- 19:49
later. Um but I I was just thinking
- 19:53
about how there was something in my dad.
- 19:56
I asked him about this and he was like
- 19:57
"Oh, I always wanted to go." And it's
- 19:59
weird cuz I grew up in South Carolina
- 20:01
and I think I had a similar thing where
- 20:02
I always wanted to go somewhere, you
- 20:05
know, bigger with more stuff going on.
- 20:07
Yeah, you had that same like drive to to
- 20:10
see more of the world basically.
- 20:11
>> And, luckily, I, I, I, went, to, school, in, New
- 20:14
York, which is the greatest place to be
- 20:16
if you have that kind of feeling.
- 20:18
>> So, when, you're, leaving, South, Carolina,
- 20:20
you apply to NYU, you apply, you're
- 20:22
like, I'm going to go to business
- 20:23
school.
- 20:24
>> I, I, Yeah,, I, didn't, know, what, I, wanted, to
- 20:25
do. This is how dumb I was.
- 20:27
>> Yeah,, business, seems, to, be, the, major
- 20:29
that a lot of men who don't know what
- 20:30
they want to do pick.
- 20:32
>> Like, my, uncle, has, a, business., I, was
- 20:34
like, "Oh, maybe I'll start my own
- 20:35
business and I'll major in business."
- 20:37
That's that's how silly I was. And then
- 20:39
I get there and there's all these kids
- 20:40
that are talking about Goldman Sachs and
- 20:42
all stuff. I don't even know what
- 20:43
Goldman Sachs is. And I'm completely
- 20:45
confused. And I had friends that were in
- 20:48
Tish, the the film and television
- 20:49
school. I was thinking about switching
- 20:50
to that or maybe the Gallatin School
- 20:52
where you make up your own major.
- 20:54
>> But, I, never, really, got, it, together., The
- 20:56
little combination of laziness and and I
- 20:58
also started doing standup like the
- 21:00
summer of my freshman year. And I I
- 21:02
distinctly remember sitting in a class
- 21:04
in my sophomore year and just thinking
- 21:05
I'm just going to do something with
- 21:06
stand up. At the least I'll be a
- 21:08
comedian that does comedy clubs and that
- 21:10
that's fine for me.
- 21:10
>> How, do, you, be, how, do, you, go, do, standup?
- 21:12
You're not like what makes you go do
- 21:14
standup when you're when you're in
- 21:16
college?
- 21:16
>> It, it, was, one, of, these, weird, things., I
- 21:18
was in school my freshman year and I was
- 21:20
just sitting around and telling stories
- 21:22
and people were laughing and someone was
- 21:23
like, "Oh man, you should try to do
- 21:25
standup." And then a week later the same
- 21:26
thing happened and it was like one of
- 21:28
these weird maybe the universe is saying
- 21:29
something. And then I went to a comedy
- 21:31
club. I went to the comedy cellar, which
- 21:32
I still perform at all the time. And I
- 21:34
saw a show and I was like, I think I can
- 21:36
do this. And and I and I tried it and I
- 21:38
I wasn't great. I did well.
- 21:40
>> Mhm.
- 21:41
>> But, I, was, very, comfortable, with, it, and, I
- 21:43
really enjoyed it. And I just wanted to
- 21:44
get good at it. I just wanted to get
- 21:46
better. I never thought about anything
- 21:47
further about, you know, acting or any
- 21:50
of that stuff. I just wanted to get good
- 21:52
at this. And it really goes back to what
- 21:53
you were saying earlier where you get
- 21:54
that high of like, you know, oh, I I
- 21:57
want that feeling again.
- 21:58
>> Yeah., And, so, I, uh, I, started, there, and
- 22:02
then uh it just kind of went from there.
- 22:04
>> Well,, when, we, met,, do, you, remember, the
- 22:05
first time we met? I was trying to think
- 22:06
today. I mean, I don't remember
- 22:08
anything.
- 22:09
>> I, have, so, many, friends, where, I'm, like,
- 22:10
when did we first meet? I mean, one of
- 22:11
the first times I remember meeting you
- 22:12
was so the UCB theater and there was a
- 22:16
uh Monday night standup show at 11:00
- 22:19
which is like a tough slot. Monday at 11
- 22:21
is not the prime slot, but they were
- 22:24
doing a stand-up show and um Matt
- 22:26
Besser, who was a part of UCB, asked me
- 22:28
if I would want to do the standup show
- 22:31
and I started doing it and I was booking
- 22:33
like my favorite comedians and and um I
- 22:36
would host it every week and it really
- 22:38
took off and I remember one week you
- 22:40
came and I was like, whoa. like you just
- 22:44
came to see it and said hi and and that
- 22:46
that's one of the first times I remember
- 22:48
meeting
- 22:48
>> that's, what, I, was, going, to, say, is, I
- 22:49
remember meeting you by seeing you on
- 22:51
stage that's back when we could all just
- 22:53
you know sleep all day and then go to do
- 22:55
a show at 11:00 on Monday night
- 22:57
>> then, you, go, on, and, you, do
- 23:00
>> you, create, your, own, sketch, show
- 23:02
>> yeah, we, we, did, the, sketch, show, on, MTV
- 23:03
yeah
- 23:04
>> yeah, and, that, was, kind, of, like, 2007
- 23:07
which was such a cool time for I think
- 23:10
for comedy at the time because you had
- 23:12
>> MTV, TV, and, Comedy, Central, and, all, these
- 23:15
places like taking big risks on on green
- 23:18
apples.
- 23:19
>> Yeah., And, and, Adult, Swim, and, all, these
- 23:21
things. Yeah.
- 23:21
>> Were, you, on, Adult, Swim?
- 23:23
>> No,, but, but, that, was, around, and, things
- 23:25
like Tim and Eric and
- 23:26
>> Yeah., And, it, was, like, here's, this, kind
- 23:28
of niche vibe. Let's give them a show
- 23:31
for, you know, like let's see what they
- 23:33
can do for a couple of seasons. Yeah.
- 23:35
>> And, so, that, that, show, was, Human, Giant.
- 23:37
Yeah.
- 23:37
>> And, you, wrote, and, and, what, did, you, learn
- 23:40
from doing a sketch show?
- 23:41
SketchU is really hard. I mean, you
- 23:44
know, uh that's one of the hardest
- 23:46
things to do cuz especially even just
- 23:48
from a production standpoint, you know
- 23:49
everything is different. There's no
- 23:51
consistency. You're always doing new
- 23:52
costumes. It's new locations. It's
- 23:54
really a hard thing to do. And writing
- 23:56
sketches is really hard. But there was
- 23:58
one sketch I did that I I wrote uh I
- 24:02
think you know we all kind of wrote
- 24:03
together but but it was one that I
- 24:05
really liked and and it was one that uh
- 24:07
Greg Daniels and Mike Sher saw that and
- 24:09
ended and it was because it was on
- 24:11
YouTube or Funny or Die or whatever and
- 24:13
and that was what got me the gig on
- 24:15
Parks.
- 24:15
>> Yeah., And, was, it, Shutter, Books?, No,, it
- 24:18
was this it was it was called viral
- 24:20
videos and the premise was me and Rob
- 24:22
Hub and we were on a talk show that Paul
- 24:24
was hosting and Hubil had just made a
- 24:27
viral video uh because he he did a video
- 24:31
where he cut his penis off and it went
- 24:33
viral and he was like so excited. I got
- 24:35
you know, two million views and then
- 24:37
he's like, "Oh, we have this other guy.
- 24:38
His name's, you know, Kevin Griezler. He
- 24:40
has a viral video, too. and it's me and
- 24:42
and I got like 40 million followers and
- 24:45
all I did was just make funny faces like
- 24:49
>> and, so, he, has, to, reckon, with, the, fact, he
- 24:52
has
- 24:52
>> he, could, have, just, made, funny, faces, and
- 24:54
he's he's done something a little bit
- 24:55
more extreme and uh yeah it was a fun
- 24:59
sketch and um but that's what uh Greg
- 25:02
and Mike told me they saw and they're
- 25:03
like oh we should get
- 25:04
>> yeah, because, a, lot, of, people, don't, know
- 25:06
you were the first person hired for
- 25:07
parks
- 25:08
>> uh, yeah, I, met, with, them, and
- 25:10
>> what, was, that, meeting, like, do, you
- 25:11
remember it.
- 25:12
>> Well,, it, was, so, mysterious, what, they
- 25:13
were up to. I had a meeting with them
- 25:16
and I told them, "I don't know what
- 25:17
you're doing, but whatever it is, that
- 25:19
would be a dream job." And um and you
- 25:24
know, this was like when The Office was
- 25:26
on and Mike and Greg were both involved
- 25:28
in that and that was, you know, my
- 25:29
favorite show like that on the air and
- 25:31
and so I told him, "Whatever you're up
- 25:33
to, let me know." And then of course
- 25:35
you know, when it all came together with
- 25:37
you and Rashidita and everything and and
- 25:39
>> Well,, I'm, kind, of, learning, when, I, was
- 25:40
talking to Plaza when Plaza was here
- 25:42
she was uh talking about like her
- 25:44
meeting with them too and
- 25:46
>> Yeah., Yeah., Very, famous, stories., Yeah.
- 25:48
Yeah.
- 25:48
>> I, know., And, it's, kind, of, funny., I, kind
- 25:50
of forgot the Avengers Assemble feeling
- 25:52
of those guys going out and and getting
- 25:55
people and bringing them in and talking
- 25:58
about like we're going to do something
- 25:59
very cool. I mean, it it was it didn't
- 26:02
even feel like there was a ton of
- 26:03
auditioning. It was more just them
- 26:05
picking people that they thought was
- 26:07
funny.
- 26:08
>> Not, only, funny,, and, I, I, feel, like, all, of
- 26:11
us whenever we see each other, do
- 26:13
interviews, kind of say this kind of
- 26:14
stuff at nauseium, but it's so true. But
- 26:16
also just the best people I've ever met
- 26:19
in my life.
- 26:20
>> Yeah.
- 26:20
>> Like, really,, I, cannot, believe, it., Cuz
- 26:22
we've all done other stuff. And you
- 26:24
know, not everybody's
- 26:26
>> you, know,, look,, we've, all, done, other
- 26:28
stuff. I don't talk about everything the
- 26:30
way I talk about parts.
- 26:32
>> You, know,, you, do, some, things, and, some
- 26:34
people it's different energy, not
- 26:35
necessarily mean or bad, but just
- 26:37
something like we all just clicked and
- 26:38
there was a vibe that worked with all of
- 26:40
us and and and and just to pay respect
- 26:42
to you and Mike, you know, when I did
- 26:44
Master None with Allan and as I become a
- 26:47
director, I I you know, what I learned
- 26:50
from you and Mike in terms of how to
- 26:52
lead
- 26:54
um I mean, I can't thank you enough. It
- 26:55
was the the best role model I could ever
- 26:57
have. C's
- 27:00
see
- 27:01
>> you, know, I, I, when, I, I, started, watching
- 27:03
your podcast and so then Park's clips
- 27:06
started coming on YouTube and
- 27:09
>> when, I, watch, it, sometimes, I, I, just, think
- 27:11
about us making it and and the it's
- 27:13
funnier for me to watch the bloopers cuz
- 27:15
that feels more like my experience
- 27:18
>> and, oh, gosh, some, of, those, things, that
- 27:20
came up I hadn't thought about in so
- 27:22
long and they were cracking me up. I saw
- 27:24
this clip. It was it was it was I don't
- 27:26
remember the context of the episode or
- 27:28
whatever, but it's we're in Ron's office
- 27:31
and me and Donna there's something
- 27:33
called blouch and and and Ron has
- 27:36
decided bronze and blush. So me and
- 27:39
Reetta start just going bronze and blush
- 27:42
bronze and blu. And then I jump on the
- 27:44
table and bush run and and me and Rea's
- 27:47
dancing is getting crazier and crazier
- 27:50
and we're just doing just dancing
- 27:51
dancing all over our doing all the crazy
- 27:54
stuff and they showed that that was what
- 27:56
we shot and then they showed the scene
- 27:57
as it aired and it was just like run and
- 28:00
it cut.
- 28:04
That's also my favorite thing. It's like
- 28:07
I mean I love trying to if I could try
- 28:09
to get someone to break you're pretty
- 28:11
good. I don't I you know. Yeah
- 28:12
>> Pepperman's, pretty, high, up, on, that.
- 28:15
>> Agree., He, never, cracked, up.
- 28:17
>> And, oh, man,, I, there, was, a, couple, of
- 28:20
times where I almost where where I got
- 28:22
like I think he didn't laugh, but I
- 28:23
think his musack may have went up a
- 28:25
little bit and I remember one thing that
- 28:28
you wrote. It was an episode you wrote.
- 28:30
I was doing that puppy boys and then the
- 28:32
and the puppy started looking at his
- 28:35
mustache and I was like, "Hi, Mr.
- 28:37
Ponson. I like your mustache. I'm just a
- 28:39
little puppy." And it it all I think it
- 28:43
almost got
- 28:43
>> it, almost, got., You're, so, right., I, mean
- 28:45
the, the, the, the, the, set, the, the the
- 28:48
setup there was like you had you had a
- 28:51
chance to play around like you got to
- 28:53
try your stuff. I mean the fact that
- 28:55
that treat yourself is used on you know
- 28:59
cocktail napkins and in Kmart and like
- 29:02
it's everywhere. And I I went to some
- 29:05
ice cream place one time and they're
- 29:06
like treat yourself to a sample. I was
- 29:09
like, "Can I have a sample?" I was like
- 29:11
"Please don't please don't connect
- 29:13
this."
- 29:16
>> Luckily,, the, person, did, put
- 29:18
>> didn't, put, them, together., Yeah., I, mean,
- 29:20
I I that's become part of the lexicon.
- 29:23
And I can remember that moment, which by
- 29:25
the way, it's so funny in that moment.
- 29:26
Treat yourself because you guys say
- 29:28
treat yourself 2011. And I'm like, oh my
- 29:30
gosh, 2011. Remember that?
- 29:33
>> And, then, there, was, one, in, the, future
- 29:34
that was like, treat yourself 2014.
- 29:37
It's like it's 2025.
- 29:40
What's happening? But I remember that
- 29:42
episode deeply because it felt like it
- 29:46
was a great example of the writers and
- 29:48
the producers realizing like what made
- 29:52
you laugh, what made Aziz laugh like
- 29:55
what would be like a what would be fun
- 29:58
for us? Like that's what they started
- 30:00
doing so well.
- 30:01
>> Yes., I, think, they, they, just, the, more
- 30:03
they got to know us and it was such a
- 30:05
good group that you could just be like
- 30:06
what happens if we put these two
- 30:07
together and then of course we had like
- 30:09
the greatest people coming in and doing
- 30:12
bit parts and they were all just so
- 30:14
funny and the characters
- 30:17
another clip I watched that and I think
- 30:20
you know talking about breaking this was
- 30:23
is the hardest scene I've ever had to
- 30:25
film in my entire acting career and it
- 30:30
was and and and if It's on YouTube the
- 30:32
the blooper of this and it's me and Do
- 30:34
you remember the scene? It's me and Adam
- 30:35
Scott and we're having lunch with Joan
- 30:38
Calmed.
- 30:39
>> Yes., The, great, Mo, Collins.
- 30:40
>> Mo, Collins, who, always, is, just, so, funny.
- 30:45
And she said we're at a lunch and she
- 30:47
says, "I'm going to go powder my nose
- 30:49
amongst other things." And then she
- 30:51
walks away. And then Adam comes to me
- 30:53
and goes, and then Ben is supposed to
- 30:56
say, "Uh, dude, is she going to go
- 30:58
powder her vagina?"
- 31:00
and we couldn't do it. And and this is
- 31:03
the only time I think this ever happened
- 31:06
on parks or anything where me and Adam
- 31:07
were like just let's just film the rest
- 31:09
of the stuff and we'll come back to
- 31:11
that.
- 31:11
>> We'll, come, back., We'll, just, come, back, to
- 31:12
the cuz we couldn't do it. And then cuz
- 31:15
cuz it's just the most absurd task cuz
- 31:17
he'll be like, "Okay, no, no, we got it
- 31:18
this, time.", Okay., All right., All right,
- 31:20
guys. Ready? Okay. Amongst other things
- 31:24
is she
- 31:26
you know, he could have said, "Dude, she
- 31:27
had no power vagina." But we couldn't
- 31:29
get through it.
- 31:30
>> And, Mo, was, so, funny, doing, it., How, she
- 31:32
was like stumbling out of the table.
- 31:34
>> Yeah., And, then, she'd, add, some, other
- 31:36
thing. And you're like, "You can't do
- 31:37
that. I just stealed myself." And now
- 31:40
you just did this other funny thing.
- 31:42
That's not fair.
- 31:43
>> Oh, my., I, love, I, love, a, blooper., I, love
- 31:45
bloopers in general. I love a blooper.
- 31:47
>> Yeah., But, watching, these, parks, bloopers
- 31:50
was after I watched your thing, it put
- 31:52
me on the algorithm. It was It was It
- 31:54
was, so, fun., Oh,, and, you, know what, I, also
- 31:56
wanted to say when we're in the in the
- 31:58
parks and recreation world for a second
- 32:00
my kids loved Aziz. They're in their
- 32:04
late teens and when they see you on TV
- 32:06
they go, "Oh, is turkey sandwich in
- 32:07
this?" So, yes, my kids were little when
- 32:12
they when I was uh shooting that show
- 32:14
and they would come and visit and Aziz
- 32:18
you're really good with kids
- 32:19
>> and, you, do, a, thing, that, they, love,, which
- 32:22
is you kind of like
- 32:23
>> I, don't, It's, funny., You, realize
- 32:25
sometimes with kids with with people and
- 32:27
kids either people like come on too
- 32:29
strong and just like want to want want
- 32:32
to interact and kids are like
- 32:35
or they just you know they don't know or
- 32:37
they're like hello young person. But
- 32:39
Aziz would basically do these bits with
- 32:41
them that would make them laugh so much.
- 32:44
One of them is you would walk by my
- 32:47
oldest and pretend to be on the phone
- 32:49
with his best friend.
- 32:53
Oh, what was his name?
- 32:54
>> Watson., Watson.
- 32:55
>> That's, right., Oh,, hey,, Watson., What's
- 32:57
going on? No, I'm just on set.
- 32:59
>> Yeah., And, my, oldest, would, just, kind, of
- 33:00
listen and be like
- 33:02
>> "Wait,, he's, talking, to, my, friend?", Like
- 33:04
he was like 5 years old.
- 33:07
And the other day as as you were just
- 33:09
like doing funny bits with them and one
- 33:11
day you were you were holding or eating
- 33:13
a turkey sandwich and they started
- 33:15
laughing and pointing at you and saying
- 33:17
"Turkey sandwich, turkey sandwich
- 33:19
whatever." And you loved that. I just
- 33:22
remember you thinking it was so funny.
- 33:24
And the other thing I just wanted you
- 33:25
you you, mentioned, like, your, algorithm
- 33:28
and your phone taking you to parks
- 33:30
clips. I did want to talk to you today
- 33:32
about your relationship to your phone.
- 33:37
>> What, is, your, relationship, to, your, phone
- 33:39
now?
- 33:41
>> I, I, try, to, stay, off, everything, as, much
- 33:44
as I can. I
- 33:45
>> How, do, How, do, you, do, that?, Teach, me, your
- 33:46
ways.
- 33:47
>> I, I, um, uh
- 33:50
I I have I don't have email. I haven't
- 33:52
had email for like 10 years.
- 33:54
>> Incredible.
- 33:55
>> Yeah., But, I, have, I, have, an, assistant.
- 33:57
>> Okay., All, right., But, still, that, means
- 33:59
there's also stuff like
- 34:01
>> you, know, like, flip, phone, and, if, I, get
- 34:04
really lost I I got to either
- 34:06
>> ask, people, or, or, just, call, my, wife, and
- 34:09
be like hey
- 34:11
>> I've, had, to, do, that, before, like, call, my
- 34:13
wife and I and it to the point where
- 34:15
she's like kind of used to it
- 34:17
>> but
- 34:17
>> and, if, you, know, I, hail, taxis, and, if
- 34:19
there's not a taxi sometimes I'll call
- 34:20
and be there's no one around.
- 34:22
>> So, you, don't, use, like, an, Uber, app?, I, I
- 34:25
usually, in in, London, there's, taxis, all
- 34:28
the time. You can handle them. And here
- 34:29
too., Yeah., In, New York., Yeah.
- 34:31
>> Well,, why, do, you, why, do, you, have, that
- 34:33
kind of relationship with your phone?
- 34:35
>> It, just, gives, me, more, space, to, think., I
- 34:37
mean, I heard something about like
- 34:38
Tarantino doesn't even have a phone.
- 34:39
Chris Nolan doesn't have a phone. I was
- 34:41
like, whoa, those guys are able to get a
- 34:42
lot of stuff done. Maybe there's
- 34:43
something to it.
- 34:44
>> It, does, feel, like, the, the, the
- 34:47
eventual next step will be just that
- 34:49
will be people like breaking up with
- 34:51
their phones in that pretty consuming
- 34:53
and uh yeah I I but that that's just me.
- 34:56
I don't know I
- 34:57
>> no, I, relate, and, I, I'm, genuinely, asking
- 35:00
because I feel like my relationship with
- 35:03
my phone has just just gotten deeper and
- 35:05
more
- 35:06
>> time, on, parks, you, told, some, told, me
- 35:07
something about how your phone fell in
- 35:09
the pool or something and you didn't
- 35:10
have for a couple days and you're like
- 35:11
this is the greatest thing ever.
- 35:12
>> Yeah,, it, definitely, feels, like, something
- 35:14
that had has taken over. It's going to
- 35:17
be really interesting this generation
- 35:19
like Gen Z and Gen Alpha who have grown
- 35:21
up with a phone in their hand.
- 35:24
>> I, saw, a, Gen, Alpha, kid, one, time, at, the
- 35:26
airport and they had a flip phone. I
- 35:28
guess it was like cuz some parents get
- 35:29
their, kid, a, flip., All right,, I'll, get
- 35:30
you flip phone. Sure. So, I saw that and
- 35:32
then I had I had mine and I saw the kid
- 35:34
and I went like this and dapped her flip
- 35:35
phone and she was completely confused.
- 35:41
>> You, know,, another, thing.
- 35:42
>> Can, I, see, your, flip, phone?
- 35:43
>> God,, this, thing, doesn't, even, work, that
- 35:45
well. Um I but another thing is I one
- 35:48
time I was eating in in a restaurant in
- 35:51
London and I heard my phone going off
- 35:53
and I checked and nothing was going on
- 35:54
but it was another dude that had a flip
- 35:56
and then we just started talking and um
- 35:59
he we were talking about all this and
- 36:01
just joking about how like oh what do
- 36:03
you do when you get lost and all this
- 36:04
kind of stuff and uh you know classic
- 36:06
flip phone guy combo and um and then he
- 36:10
said you know the thing I think you got
- 36:12
to avoid now is is the chatbot and I was
- 36:14
like oh 100%.
- 36:16
>> Okay,, let's, talk, about, that., The, AI,
- 36:18
>> not, the, AI,, but, just, chatbot.
- 36:20
>> Chatbot, or, I, I, think, I'm, not, even
- 36:21
calling it right, but the thing where
- 36:23
you type the chat GBT. I call it
- 36:24
chatbot. Yeah, but it's chat GPT. See, I
- 36:27
don't even know the name.
- 36:28
>> Agree.
- 36:29
>> I, think, this, is, like,, you, know,, it's
- 36:32
outsourcing critical thinking. It's
- 36:34
making everyone's opinions kind of same.
- 36:35
This is my feeling, you know, and and I
- 36:37
think people using it instead of Google
- 36:39
most of the time it's wrong. And and
- 36:41
it's just kind of like telling you what
- 36:43
you want to hear so you can keep asking
- 36:45
you questions and you know I someone
- 36:47
showed me some commercial where it's
- 36:49
like someone said like no how do I make
- 36:51
a dinner for this girl that makes and
- 36:54
I'm like why I would rather someone call
- 36:57
someone and and ask someone or maybe
- 36:59
have some sort of conversation a human
- 37:01
thing like I it just seems like it's
- 37:03
like outsourcing
- 37:04
>> it, is
- 37:04
>> thinking, and, and, it's, like, killing, some
- 37:07
bit, of, humanity, and, I, don't know, it, it
- 37:09
kind of makes you I was reading some
- 37:11
article where it said like it's making
- 37:12
everyone a little more basic.
- 37:14
>> Ooh, yeah, that's, real., I, think, that's
- 37:17
real. You know I've always found you to
- 37:19
be a very curious person who's kind of
- 37:22
interested in why we do things. Like you
- 37:24
you're very interested in the why of
- 37:27
like why people make choices. And I feel
- 37:29
like definitely the last few standup
- 37:32
specials that I've seen you do
- 37:34
definitely have that feeling. And what
- 37:36
is it? Are you doing standup right now?
- 37:38
Are you out doing it at all or
- 37:39
>> I'm, I'm, just, been, promoting, the, movie
- 37:41
now,, but, I, think, I'm, going to, go, out, um
- 37:43
in in after the movie in like October
- 37:46
November. Um
- 37:47
>> and, do, new, all, new, material, or, do
- 37:49
>> I've, been, doing, stuff, about, like, being
- 37:51
married and and uh you know I we're
- 37:55
trying to like have a kid talking about
- 37:56
all that stuff.
- 37:57
>> So, what's, it, like, being, married?
- 38:00
>> Is, it, fun, being, married?
- 38:02
>> No,, I, love, my, wife, very, very, much., She's
- 38:05
great that's ever happened to me. Yeah
- 38:07
you met her a handful of times and uh
- 38:08
yeah, she's great.
- 38:09
>> How, did, you, meet?
- 38:10
>> Uh, we, met, in, London, and, uh, you, know,, we
- 38:14
did long distance for a while and then
- 38:16
uh yeah, I I was like, "All right
- 38:19
>> how, has, being, married, changed, you?"
- 38:22
>> I, just, feel, like, all, the, other, stuff
- 38:24
doesn't really matter to me anymore
- 38:26
>> you, know?, I'm, just, like,, "Oh,, wow., This
- 38:28
this person is is everything to me." And
- 38:30
just to to have that person to come home
- 38:32
to and to hold and that that uh that's
- 38:34
it kind of makes everything else seem
- 38:36
like it's less important.
- 38:37
>> I, mean, sorry, I, love, it., I'm, so, happy, for
- 38:41
you. I'm excited to hear what you say on
- 38:44
stage about marriage and relationship
- 38:48
because um I've always known you to be a
- 38:53
a person who's um has who has a lot of
- 38:56
love to give. Oh.
- 38:59
>> Oh,, thank, you.
- 39:00
>> Get, those, tears, going,, Aziz.
- 39:03
>> Let's, get, those, tears, going., Chop, chop.
- 39:13
Before we talk about Good Fortune, your
- 39:15
new film, which looks amazing, and holy
- 39:17
[ __ ] the cast is great and you wrote
- 39:18
and directed it. It's so good. Um, when
- 39:21
you were doing Master of None, it Master
- 39:23
of None feels like a show with Alan Yang
- 39:25
that you created.
- 39:26
>> Yeah.
- 39:28
>> It, feels, like, when, I, was, when, I, was
- 39:29
looking up and and going over your stuff
- 39:32
and being reminded of it almost feels
- 39:33
like a different time in television that
- 39:36
it was precoid.
- 39:38
>> Yeah., I, mean,, was, it, it's, like, a, time
- 39:39
capsule in New York now that show, you
- 39:41
know, it's about 10 years old now, you
- 39:42
know, when we were making it. And um
- 39:44
that was when Netflix first came out.
- 39:46
And this was this was a time when
- 39:48
Netflix was like, you remember people
- 39:50
would be like, "Oh, there's a new
- 39:51
Netflix show." You know, they had so
- 39:52
few. And so every show got their shine.
- 39:55
And you know, when Allan and I made that
- 39:57
show, the idea of like, "Whoa, this guy
- 39:59
this guy that's got the brown face is
- 40:01
starring in the show, like that was like
- 40:04
not really happening, you know." And um
- 40:07
>> uh, yeah,, and, they, let, us, kind, of, really
- 40:09
do what we wanted. Like you know, when
- 40:11
people talk about, oh, you know, getting
- 40:12
notes, they hadn't even hired people to
- 40:14
give, notes, yet., You, know what, I, mean?
- 40:16
And then the first season did really
- 40:17
well. So the second season was like
- 40:18
"Yeah, just keep doing your thing." And
- 40:20
uh and and and it was it was just a
- 40:22
radically different time. And now
- 40:24
streaming and making shows and all these
- 40:26
things have become much much different.
- 40:28
>> Yeah., The, whole, industry, is, so
- 40:30
different. And I remember you guys
- 40:31
feeling
- 40:33
excited about um about doing that. What
- 40:36
was it like to leave an ensemble and
- 40:37
then be like the lead of a show? And and
- 40:40
the
- 40:40
>> Well,, that's, the, other, thing, about, Parks
- 40:41
is is Parks is not only you you're
- 40:44
you're on this great show, but
- 40:46
everything's taken care of. Like you
- 40:48
just show up and you're like, "Treat
- 40:50
yourself. Good night. See you, Z. Thanks
- 40:52
so much. Great day at work." And and and
- 40:54
that is not what you do on Master. Not
- 40:57
what I did on Good Fortune. You you have
- 40:59
to pick
- 41:01
you know, people I think sometimes
- 41:03
>> you, know,, they're, like,, "What, is
- 41:04
directing?" You don't really, it's kind
- 41:06
of a vague thing. And and it's really
- 41:08
you're just deciding everything, you
- 41:10
know? You're like, "Okay, well, okay.
- 41:12
Where where does the scene take place?
- 41:14
Okay, a restaurant. Okay, let's go drive
- 41:15
around and look at how many restaurants
- 41:18
got to pick the restaurant. What are the
- 41:19
people wearing?" You're you're making so
- 41:21
many decisions. You're crafting
- 41:22
everything and you're there and then and
- 41:24
you have to, you know, I I'm writing
- 41:25
everything, too. So, you have to write
- 41:26
it and then you have to figure out how
- 41:28
everything's going to look and make all
- 41:29
these decisions and then you have to
- 41:30
edit it and you have to make sure it all
- 41:31
works. And it's a much more involved
- 41:34
process. Uh and and just acting is a
- 41:37
much different, you know, simpler gig
- 41:39
you know.
- 41:40
>> Um
- 41:41
>> what, part, of, directing, surprises, you
- 41:42
that you like so much?
- 41:44
>> I, just, love, these, moments, where, you've
- 41:46
written something and you have your
- 41:48
actors and you know, you had in your
- 41:50
head certain way and then someone does
- 41:51
something a little surprising or it just
- 41:53
goes to another level. and and you know
- 41:56
when I I was looking at some behind the
- 41:58
stuff scenes for good fortune and this I
- 42:00
really enjoyed the stuff where I wasn't
- 42:01
acting and I was just over the side and
- 42:03
like you know it was like Hanu and Seth
- 42:04
and they were doing something that was
- 42:05
cracking me up and I was just you know
- 42:07
laughing in and you know trying not to
- 42:10
>> mess, up, the, scene, and, um, those, moments
- 42:12
are super fun. I mean there's another
- 42:14
there's a scene where they're like
- 42:15
riding in a car and and um they were
- 42:18
like okay do you want to follow them in
- 42:19
the van be on the radio? I was like oh
- 42:20
those radios always cut out I'm just
- 42:21
going to hide in the back seat. So I was
- 42:23
like curled up like this and I was just
- 42:24
like yelling jokes and and you know Seth
- 42:27
and Kiana are so iconic and like hearing
- 42:28
them say the jokes like the way you have
- 42:30
it in your head but also a little
- 42:32
funnier. I mean that that when it really
- 42:33
feels like you're a little kid playing
- 42:35
those those are the best parts. You know
- 42:36
what I mean?
- 42:37
>> Totally., and, and, and, also, to, be, allow
- 42:40
yourself to still do that because
- 42:42
sometimes I think you know when you're
- 42:44
working on anything that you created no
- 42:46
matter it doesn't have to be a film it
- 42:47
can be anything that you made and you
- 42:48
like hand it over and and people then
- 42:51
start to work on it it's hard to not to
- 42:54
not be too um rigid about it like you
- 42:57
want you have an idea of how it's going
- 42:58
to go and it's supposed to go that way
- 43:00
and
- 43:01
>> the, reason, why, we, work, with, other, people
- 43:02
is to collaborate.
- 43:04
>> Yeah., Yeah., to, and, to, play, like, that, and
- 43:06
to see what they have to say and and I
- 43:07
love collaborating with actors, which is
- 43:09
something I learned from um from our
- 43:11
experience on Parks, you know, Mike and
- 43:14
all the writers, they would take all
- 43:16
these little things like, "Oh
- 43:17
Offerman's into woodworking. Maybe that
- 43:19
oh, he plays a saxophone, maybe, you
- 43:20
know,
- 43:21
>> and, and, I've, always, spent, a, lot, of, time
- 43:23
trying to get to know the people that I
- 43:24
work with and try to figure out how to
- 43:26
put more of them into it and try to
- 43:27
understand who they are to help write
- 43:29
the character better, make it feel more
- 43:30
like them." Um, let's talk about Good
- 43:32
Fortune because that cast is Okay, so
- 43:35
first of all, is Kano as nice as he
- 43:37
seems.
- 43:38
>> He, He's, the, best.
- 43:39
>> He, seems, incredible.
- 43:40
>> Yeah,, he's, the, best., And, he's, also, he's
- 43:42
like the sweetest guy, but he's also
- 43:43
like the coolest guy in the world. Like
- 43:45
he kind of balances both things. Like
- 43:47
you know, we'll do like rehearsals at my
- 43:48
house or whatever and Kean will show up
- 43:50
like on a motorcycle. Like he looks like
- 43:52
he drove from an anime movie straight
- 43:53
into reality. Then he gets out, he's
- 43:55
wearing like all black. He's got like a
- 43:57
backpack from the future. He takes it
- 43:58
off. He's got boots on and and he's just
- 44:01
the coolest. And me and Seth are just
- 44:02
like
- 44:04
>> I, mean, I, don't, know., I, don't, like, that
- 44:06
Kean was still driving a motorcycle. I
- 44:08
want him off that motorcycle for for
- 44:10
insurance purposes.
- 44:11
>> Is, riding, that, motorcycle., I'm, like
- 44:15
No. No. He loves his motorcycle. Yeah.
- 44:17
>> And, Seth, and, Kiki, you've, worked, with
- 44:19
before. Kiki is the best.
- 44:21
>> You, got, to, meet, Kiki., Kiki, is, one, of, my
- 44:23
favorite people.
- 44:24
>> I, have, met, Kiki.
- 44:25
>> You, have?, I, got, the, privilege, of, doing
- 44:28
her podcast.
- 44:29
>> Oh,, you, did?, We, did, her, podcast,, too., It
- 44:31
was so fun.
- 44:31
>> So, fun., Kiki, and, I, have, had, dinner,, not
- 44:34
to brag, by ourselves, just the two of
- 44:37
us.
- 44:38
>> She's, like, in, Australia, now., We, rarely
- 44:41
get to see each other.
- 44:41
>> She, works, all, the, time., She's, so, She, is
- 44:44
so naturally funny. I've described Kiki.
- 44:47
She is a a movie star. Hilarious.
- 44:51
>> She, once, told, me, her, aunt, died, in, a, way
- 44:53
that was really funny, and I was like
- 44:54
"How did you do that?" I'm laughing and
- 44:56
you tell me till your aunt died.
- 44:59
>> She, is, so, quick., She, She's, so, sharp.
- 45:02
She's so talented. I mean, she's just as
- 45:04
good a singer and performer as she is an
- 45:06
actress.
- 45:07
>> We, had, the, scene, where, me, and, Kiki, are
- 45:08
dancing and I was like working with some
- 45:10
choreographer and then Kiki is just
- 45:11
like, "Oh, yeah." And then just does all
- 45:12
this crazy stuff. And I'm like, "Oh
- 45:14
>> yeah., She, is, a, she's, so, talented.", And, I
- 45:17
mean, the cast is really awesome. How
- 45:19
did you um I guess like how did you let
- 45:23
everybody play an experiment on the like
- 45:26
was did was it a was it that kind of set
- 45:29
like did you
- 45:30
>> Yeah,, I, mean, I, think, look, if, you, cast
- 45:32
the right people it's all going to come
- 45:34
together in a and gel in a nice way and
- 45:37
and you know I I spent a lot of time
- 45:39
rehearsing with everybody so we kind of
- 45:41
>> Okay., Do, you, like, to, rehearse?
- 45:42
>> I, like, to, spend, a, lot, of, time., So, we
- 45:43
because you know when you're actually on
- 45:44
set, that is the most precious time when
- 45:46
the camera's rolling to get to that
- 45:48
moment. It it's so precious and you're
- 45:50
always don't have enough time blah blah.
- 45:51
So the more time I can spend with these
- 45:53
people beforehand and rehearse and kind
- 45:54
of
- 45:55
>> make, sure, everything, sounds, right
- 45:56
beforehand and and you know rewrite
- 45:58
things to make it really sound like
- 45:59
them, then when we get on set there's
- 46:00
just less we're already kind of almost
- 46:02
there.
- 46:03
>> Yeah.
- 46:03
>> U, but, of, course, once, you're, there, in, the
- 46:05
place with the clothes and everything
- 46:06
else, you come up with new ideas.
- 46:10
they're so
- 46:12
comfortable with
- 46:15
you know Keanu at first I think Keanu
- 46:16
was a little
- 46:19
he
- 46:20
as a comedy guy as much as me and Seth
- 46:23
but he he got into it and he he would
- 46:25
improvise and stuff a little bit
- 46:26
>> and, I, I, told, Seth, I, was, like, could, you
- 46:28
imagine if like we did an action movie
- 46:30
how how awkward like kind of what I'm
- 46:34
>> I'm, going, to, push, back, on, that, because, I
- 46:37
feel like we would be great as an action
- 46:39
movie. I Cuz I want I want us to be able
- 46:42
to do more action.
- 46:44
>> Really?
- 46:45
>> Don't, you, wish, you, could, do, a, film, where
- 46:47
you get to just say one line a day?
- 46:51
>> Oh,, yeah., Kiana, barely, speaks, in, those
- 46:54
movies. What do
- 46:54
>> you, mean?, You, know,, when, I, was, a, kid,, my
- 46:56
favorite movies were all action movies.
- 46:57
And my favorite movies were like
- 46:58
Terminator 2 and Die Hard. And I mean, I
- 47:01
still love those movies. Those are some
- 47:02
of my favorite movies, but I I loved
- 47:04
action movies as a kid. when I was a
- 47:05
little kid I that you know it's I I was
- 47:08
I mean I I like comedy and all this
- 47:10
stuff but
- 47:10
>> I, feel, like, once, you, start, talking, you
- 47:12
it's diminishing returns like once you
- 47:14
actually start talking in film
- 47:16
everyone's like oh that's how they talk
- 47:17
oh they're saying that like but if you
- 47:19
never talk
- 47:20
>> like, which, are, you, trying, to, be, like, in
- 47:21
a Fast and Furious movie what's the
- 47:23
action movie
- 47:23
>> I, would, like, more, of, like, a, boring
- 47:25
identity
- 47:25
>> oh, whoa
- 47:26
>> just, walking, through, the, streets, of, a
- 47:28
European city
- 47:29
>> I, like, that
- 47:30
>> leather, jacket, I, feel, like, everyone
- 47:32
would like if if I did that everyone
- 47:34
would go like
- 47:36
on the screen.
- 47:37
>> Well,, that's, a, sometimes, sometimes
- 47:39
people send me stuff that's more
- 47:40
serious. I'm like, they're just going to
- 47:42
think I'm too silly to be this guy.
- 47:45
>> I'm, and, it's, going, to, hurt, the, movie., I
- 47:47
can't do it for you.
- 47:48
>> I, know, what, you, mean., I, can't, show, up, as
- 47:49
the villain and people aren't going to
- 47:51
be like, "She's too nice. She's going to
- 47:53
change her mind."
- 47:56
I do think it's amazing when people like
- 47:58
decide to do a a 180 as an actor and
- 48:01
then they play someone really horrible
- 48:03
and you're just like, "Oh no, we love
- 48:05
that person." And now they're
- 48:06
>> Some, people, can, do, it,, you, know?, Even
- 48:08
when Keanu and I one day we were doing
- 48:10
some press stuff together and and there
- 48:11
was like a room that I was waiting in in
- 48:13
between and it would happened to be like
- 48:14
John Wick weekend and like I was
- 48:16
watching, some, of the, Wick, stuff., I'm
- 48:17
like, "Wow, I can't believe he did this
- 48:19
and then plays this very silly guy in my
- 48:21
movie." And it's the same guy. It's it's
- 48:23
it's really impressive. He just also has
- 48:25
um a great reputation for being a
- 48:28
wonderful person, Keanu. Like it just
- 48:30
seems like
- 48:32
you know, those kind of things um just
- 48:35
get out into the world and he just seems
- 48:38
like he's handled his giant fame and his
- 48:41
like very long um
- 48:43
>> yeah,, he's, been, a, long, long, time., Yeah.
- 48:47
I mean, when I was about to meet him, I
- 48:49
did like a little film festival and I
- 48:50
was re-watching like Parenthood and and
- 48:52
>> Parenthood., I, just, saw, rewatch
- 48:55
Parenthood on the plane. It's so good.
- 48:57
>> It's, incredible.
- 48:58
>> It, is., It's, so, good.
- 49:00
>> I, I, during, that, weekend, that, it, with, the
- 49:03
John Wick weekend, they showed
- 49:04
Parenthood, too, and I was watching in
- 49:05
between and I was just very
- 49:06
>> different.
- 49:08
I know. Do you Are there films that you
- 49:10
go back to that are like your comfort
- 49:11
watches? It's like if you're if you're
- 49:13
if it's a rainy day and you're like I'm
- 49:14
going to, put, on, a, movie., Do, you, like, to
- 49:16
watch films?
- 49:17
>> I, I, love, watching, films, and, and, there's
- 49:20
definitely like a film nerd element to
- 49:23
my wife to my life and and um
- 49:26
>> uh, yeah,, the, movies, I, go, back, to, a, lot.
- 49:28
I love you know I you know working on
- 49:31
this I I and and all the time when I'm
- 49:33
writing I revisit a I revisit like Being
- 49:35
John Malovich a lot. I love that. I love
- 49:37
Eternal Sunshine. Smile Eternal
- 49:39
Sunshine. Um, those two I visit a lot. I
- 49:42
love those. And then I love watching
- 49:44
just older movies, too.
- 49:45
>> Me,, too., I, mean,, I, I, I, feel, like, the, the
- 49:49
joy of getting older is like looking
- 49:52
back and realizing, oh, there's a lot of
- 49:54
stuff I still haven't seen, you know?
- 49:56
>> Oh,, yeah., It, never, ends.
- 49:57
>> I, know.
- 49:58
>> I, mean,, that's, the, thing, that, got, me
- 50:00
into being more diligent about watching
- 50:01
film was, you know, I realized, oh, all
- 50:03
these directors that I love, whether
- 50:05
it's like Scorsesei or Paul Thomas
- 50:06
Sanders, whatever, they've seen every
- 50:07
movie. And I was like, that can't be a
- 50:09
coincidence. I got to be honest
- 50:10
sometimes it's overwhelming. Like the
- 50:12
way people who make films talk about
- 50:14
films definitely makes me feel like
- 50:17
stressed.
- 50:17
>> Oh,, I, had, to, go, on, like, TCM, or, whatever
- 50:20
and I was like, "Hey man, I I might get
- 50:22
some things wrong here cuz like Scorsese
- 50:24
will be like and and the person that did
- 50:26
the craft services here um you know, he
- 50:28
was making these ham sandwiches that had
- 50:30
this special kind of cheese that that
- 50:31
everybody loved and uh Greta Garbo
- 50:33
didn't like them. So he for her he would
- 50:35
do it with turkey and you how
- 50:39
>> totally, tell, it's, like, I, don't, know, I
- 50:41
don't know it I know it's just and and
- 50:44
it and it definitely feels like that
- 50:46
feeling like when you have an oral exam
- 50:47
in school like
- 50:48
>> watching, parks, and, recreation, and, you
- 50:49
know any Polish kids call it these I'm
- 50:51
sorry turkey sandwich
- 50:54
>> how, do, you, remember, all, this
- 50:56
>> I, know, it's, intense, okay, speaking, of
- 50:58
food though turkey sandwich and food I
- 51:00
want to talk to you about food
- 51:02
>> sure
- 51:03
>> okay, before, we, wrap, Because, I, feel, like
- 51:05
the food, your relationship to food is
- 51:09
is ties in into the bigger idea of you
- 51:12
like trying to open yourself up to a lot
- 51:15
of stuff in life like being curious.
- 51:16
>> Sure.
- 51:17
>> You, growing, up,, what, was, the, food, you
- 51:19
were eating growing up?
- 51:21
>> I, My, mom, would, cook, Indian, food, and
- 51:24
there was a woman that took care of us.
- 51:25
Her name was Miss Biola and she cooked
- 51:28
southern food. So there would be, you
- 51:29
know, Indian food like biryani or
- 51:31
whatever and then there'd be like
- 51:32
chicken and dumplings and
- 51:34
>> incredible.
- 51:35
>> Weirdly, I, think, would, eat, a, little, bit
- 51:36
of both.
- 51:37
>> So, I, grew, up, on, southern, food, and, Indian
- 51:39
food.
- 51:39
>> Okay., And, then, when, did, you, become, when
- 51:41
did you start realizing like I I
- 51:43
actually care very much about what I eat
- 51:46
and I want to learn how to cook and be a
- 51:48
good cook.
- 51:50
>> It's, interesting, you, ask, because, I, think
- 51:51
people think of me as like oh that was
- 51:53
all the restaurants. Like I know I
- 51:54
actually like just cook at home all the
- 51:56
time now. I love to cook and and that um
- 51:59
uh
- 52:00
>> I, think, it, happened, and, a, lot, of, it, was
- 52:02
during co I started cooking more and
- 52:03
more and it was kind of what our day was
- 52:05
based around. It's like oh we're going
- 52:06
to cook cuz I I was in London during co
- 52:09
and and the farmers markets and stuff
- 52:10
didn't close and you kind of walk around
- 52:12
and and so food became a way to kind of
- 52:15
structure your day a little bit.
- 52:16
>> Yeah.
- 52:16
>> Um, but, during, CO, I, wanted, to, learn, all
- 52:20
my mom's recipes and uh so I asked my
- 52:23
mom to help me cuz Indian food is very
- 52:24
intimidating. I I um but it's not a
- 52:27
Wait, do I ever send you those cookbooks
- 52:29
I make? I make these cookbooks for
- 52:30
friends. Uh I got to send you one. I'm
- 52:32
sorry.
- 52:32
>> No,
- 52:35
>> I'll, send, you, all, of, them.
- 52:36
>> Wait,, wait., So So, you, like, transcribed
- 52:38
your mom's recipes?
- 52:39
>> Not, all, of, them,, but, like, every, year
- 52:41
like during Christmas time, I make this.
- 52:42
I'm so sorry I haven't sent it to you.
- 52:44
I'll send it to you. No worries. But uh
- 52:46
yeah, I uh I I just whatever I've been
- 52:49
cooking that year and I've done I
- 52:50
started during co and then and I just
- 52:52
kind of kept it going.
- 52:53
>> Oh,, that's, awesome., But, Indian, food, is
- 52:55
what I really love to cook.
- 52:56
>> What, What, makes, Indian, food, like, for, for
- 52:59
a person just cooking like hard to cook?
- 53:01
Why, is that?
- 53:01
>> It's, nothing, hard., It's, just,, you, know,
- 53:02
I would ask I'm like, "Oh, how much of
- 53:04
that, coriander, powder, did, you, put in?"
- 53:05
It's like, "I don't know. I didn't me,"
- 53:06
you know, and you're like, "Wait, but
- 53:07
but and you're scared that you're going
- 53:08
to mess it up." But it's not like
- 53:09
baking, you know, where like, "Oh, if
- 53:10
you put like a teaspoon too much, it's
- 53:12
not really going to screw it up too
- 53:13
much." And the other thing that's super
- 53:15
helpful is YouTube. if you can because
- 53:17
you can watch there's all these people
- 53:19
in in uh like you know aunties and stuff
- 53:21
in India that have YouTube channels and
- 53:23
they show you how to cook everything and
- 53:24
seeing it visually makes it a little
- 53:25
less intimidating and you just got to do
- 53:27
that first trip to the Indian store and
- 53:30
and get I always think that term is kind
- 53:32
of funny that's what everybody calls
- 53:34
like the Indian grocery store they call
- 53:35
the Indian store but that sounds like
- 53:36
you're going and buying Indian people
- 53:38
>> no, you're, not
- 53:41
ingredients
- 53:42
>> but, uh, you, just, got, to, get, all, the, stuff
- 53:43
and they keep in the pantry and then
- 53:45
it's like oh yeah everything's like
- 53:46
"Oh, yeah. Slice some onions and some
- 53:47
little ginger garlic and then some
- 53:49
spices and then maybe a tomato and then
- 53:50
you put the chicken in, stir it around
- 53:52
20 minutes, it's done." But
- 53:54
>> wait,, can, I, tell, you?, So,, I, cooked, for
- 53:56
Rashidita
- 53:57
>> like, a, week, ago.
- 53:58
>> Mhm.
- 53:59
>> She, lives, really, close, to, me, and, uh, her
- 54:02
family came over and she brought her
- 54:03
little kid and she was like I was like
- 54:06
cooking Indian food and she's like, "Can
- 54:07
you make something for him? Something
- 54:08
not too intense." I was like "Oh, I got
- 54:10
it. I got to make him chicken 65."
- 54:12
That's like it's like chicken like
- 54:13
Indian chicken nuggets almost. They're
- 54:14
like little pieces of chicken. Little
- 54:16
kids love it. So every little and every
- 54:17
kid loves it. And so I made him Chicken
- 54:20
65 and he ate it and then he started
- 54:23
going crazy. He just like had so much
- 54:25
energy. And then I realized it's because
- 54:27
the chicken 65 they put red food
- 54:29
coloring in it to make it bright red and
- 54:31
the red food coloring has that dye that
- 54:34
makes the kids go crazy.
- 54:35
>> Go, crazy., It, got, him, pumped, up.
- 54:37
>> Yeah., So, now, whenever, they, come, over, I
- 54:39
just make a bunch of chicken 65 and he
- 54:41
goes nuts. Well, it is so funny they say
- 54:43
that because we do a thing here on the
- 54:45
podcast where we like to talk to
- 54:46
somebody before the podcast. We talk
- 54:48
well behind their back
- 54:49
>> and, I, get, a, question, and, I, just, talked
- 54:51
to Rashidita.
- 54:51
>> Oh,, well.
- 54:53
>> And, Rashidita, just, told, us, that, you, made
- 54:55
her chicken 65.
- 54:58
>> She, loves, it., She, was, like, she's, like
- 55:00
she she was like let's comfort her
- 55:02
again. I was like what do you watch
- 55:03
chicken 65?
- 55:05
>> She, loves, it., And, and, you, know, in, many
- 55:08
ways I we both we Rashidita and I feel
- 55:11
like we were your auntie at times on
- 55:13
that show and I know Rashidita and you
- 55:16
guys like and she was talking about like
- 55:18
how you know what we were talking about
- 55:20
earlier that you are um like what she
- 55:24
really respects about you is the way
- 55:26
that you're a curious person always
- 55:28
trying to um learn more about yourself
- 55:30
and the world. And her question was um
- 55:34
and she was you know saying you're a
- 55:36
very very good chef.
- 55:37
>> Oh
- 55:38
>> chef, or, cook?, What, would, you, say?, Chef
- 55:40
cook
- 55:42
a little more seems like someone else
- 55:44
has to call you.
- 55:45
>> I'm, not, that, good., I'm, not, that, great.
- 55:47
>> Um, if, you, get, the, right, hat,, you, become
- 55:48
a chef. You just put it on. Um but um as
- 55:51
a cook, she wanted me to ask you what is
- 55:54
your um favorite thing to cook?
- 55:58
Uh I love to cook Indian food and I love
- 56:00
cooking stuff. I think there's something
- 56:02
special about the food you ate growing
- 56:04
up and the food your family made. And um
- 56:07
I think there's some you know one time I
- 56:09
went to India and I stayed for a little
- 56:11
extra time and and I asked my family I
- 56:13
was like oh who's like really like kind
- 56:15
of the, mean, cooks, like, who, can, I, learn
- 56:16
from? And I stayed for a couple days
- 56:18
with this uh some people that were a
- 56:20
little bit distant relatives like my
- 56:22
aunt sister or something like that. And
- 56:24
um they showed me so much stuff and and
- 56:27
and uh
- 56:28
>> they, were, cooking, in, their, home, and
- 56:29
showed you.
- 56:30
>> Yeah., And, just, learning, like, home, food
- 56:31
that comes from your family. I think
- 56:33
there's something special about it and
- 56:34
and you know cuz that's I think that's
- 56:37
something important to pass down and and
- 56:39
you know my own my own parents you know
- 56:41
they're they're all healthy and
- 56:42
everything but you know you start
- 56:43
thinking about their their time and and
- 56:45
and just like oh wow like uh it's a
- 56:48
piece of your family history that I
- 56:50
think is cool to try to preserve. I feel
- 56:52
like you also took cooking lessons
- 56:54
somewhere else too. Did you go to Italy
- 56:56
or
- 56:56
>> in, season, two, of, Master?, That, also, gave
- 56:59
me a big help to be comfortable in the
- 57:01
kitchen. So it it made it less
- 57:04
intimidating. But uh season 2 took place
- 57:06
in Italy. So before we filmed it, I I
- 57:08
went and lived in this town in Italy and
- 57:10
I I uh learned Italian a little bit and
- 57:12
and I worked in these kitchens and these
- 57:13
places and and these these people did
- 57:16
not really know who I was and I was
- 57:17
like, "Yeah, I'm working on a TV show."
- 57:19
And they're like, "Oh, okay." And then
- 57:21
but they they let me work in the
- 57:22
kitchens and I I I uh
- 57:25
>> I, learned, a, lot, from, these, these, people
- 57:26
that were there and they were so nice
- 57:28
and um it it kind of gave me some
- 57:30
confidence to to kind of start with the
- 57:32
Italian food. And then I there was a
- 57:34
couple of Indian things I could make but
- 57:35
then when during co I really started I
- 57:37
had more time. I had nothing to do. So I
- 57:39
was just like okay I'm going to keep
- 57:40
pushing this. I always say this, I did
- 57:42
not grow up cooking at all. And my I had
- 57:44
a busy working mom who, you know, in I
- 57:47
grew up in the 70s and early 80s, so I
- 57:49
didn't have a ton of, you know, we we
- 57:51
didn't have like a cooking family. And I
- 57:53
always say it's never too late to start
- 57:55
trying because it is very like lowrisk
- 57:59
high reward. Like try a dish and if it
- 58:02
doesn't work, you just nobody knows. You
- 58:04
can just throw it away. Like you can
- 58:06
just And when it does work, you feel
- 58:08
like incredible. Repetition is the
- 58:11
father of learning.
- 58:12
>> Yes.
- 58:13
>> Lil, Wayne, said, that.
- 58:16
>> He, did.
- 58:17
>> He, did.
- 58:18
>> Yeah.
- 58:19
>> Amazing.
- 58:19
>> I, mean,, I, don't, know, if, he, was, quoting
- 58:21
someone else.
- 58:23
>> Maybe., Maybe., Maybe., Um,, we'll, see.
- 58:26
We'll look it up. What are you laughing
- 58:27
at these days? What are you watching
- 58:29
reading?
- 58:31
I know you're not addicted to your
- 58:32
phone. You have a flip phone. Um, but
- 58:35
what are you what do you do to laugh?
- 58:38
Where do you go
- 58:38
>> for, laugh?, What, did, I, watch, to, laugh
- 58:41
recently?
- 58:41
>> I, know, cuz, it's, kind, of, hard, when, comedy
- 58:43
is your job.
- 58:44
>> Yeah., You, don't, watch, as, much, comedy
- 58:46
sometimes.
- 58:46
>> I, don't, you, and, and, you, know, when, you
- 58:49
when you when you come from the stand-up
- 58:50
world, we all know that the way standups
- 58:52
laugh is they just watch each other and
- 58:53
go.
- 58:54
>> Yeah., Yeah., Yeah., It's, a, different
- 58:55
thing.
- 58:56
>> They, go,, "Yeah,, that, was, funny.
- 58:57
>> What, was, I, laughing, at, recently?"
- 58:59
>> I, know., Anything, that, you, do, when, you're
- 59:00
trying
- 59:01
>> I, just, my, You, know,, every, now, and, then
- 59:04
my wife will show me some silly internet
- 59:06
thing. She she showed me something and
- 59:08
it was like it was like a meme of like a
- 59:11
dolphin look. It was like looking happy
- 59:13
and it was like me letting the flight
- 59:15
attendant know I'm ready for a snack and
- 59:17
it was a dolphin just like like just
- 59:19
stupid stuff like that.
- 59:20
>> Let's, look, up, that, dolphin.
- 59:23
>> I I, think, it's, a, dolphin.
- 59:24
>> I, love, a, meme.
- 59:25
>> Um, yeah,, those, kind, of, things., Um, movies
- 59:29
and stuff. What? I'm trying to think. Um
- 59:32
>> smiling., I, love, some, of, those, old, movies
- 59:34
like The Apartment. Like just those
- 59:37
things just make me laugh so hard.
- 59:39
>> Um
- 59:40
>> you, don't, you, don't, go, on, Tik, Tok, or
- 59:42
anything like that, right?
- 59:43
>> No,, I, never, really, been, on, Tik, Tok.
- 59:48
>> I, mean,, I've, seen, videos., I'm, not, like, a
- 59:50
you know, I've seen some of the stuff.
- 59:51
Some of that stuff has made me laugh
- 59:52
but sometimes I see the stuff I don't
- 59:54
understand.
- 59:55
>> It's, not, him.
- 59:56
>> It's, not, him.
- 59:57
>> Oh,, yeah., Yeah., Yeah., Yeah.
- 59:58
>> Well,, it's
- 59:58
>> like, a, cookie., That's, pretty, close., But
- 1:00:00
the the the one my wife sent me, the the
- 1:00:02
dolphin had a better smile. I got to
- 1:00:03
find it. I got to send it to you later.
- 1:00:05
>> Um,, do, you, watch, anything?, Are, you
- 1:00:07
watching any shows right now that like
- 1:00:09
is is, you know, uh, I mean, it it's an
- 1:00:13
interesting time right now for comedy. I
- 1:00:15
mean, Good Fortune is a great example of
- 1:00:17
like there's not a lot of just straight
- 1:00:19
comedies out there in the world right
- 1:00:21
now.
- 1:00:21
>> To, be, like, an, original, idea, that's, a
- 1:00:24
comedy that's in theaters. Like to have
- 1:00:26
even one of those three now
- 1:00:28
>> is, wild., It, is.
- 1:00:30
>> And, I,, you, know,, Seth, and, I, were, always
- 1:00:32
talking about this of how we wanted the
- 1:00:33
movie to be theatrical and how, you
- 1:00:35
know, I remember going in New York when
- 1:00:37
I was in school going to see like Anchor
- 1:00:38
Man and, you know, 40 version, all these
- 1:00:41
movies and just being in like a back
- 1:00:43
theater and just dying and and I think
- 1:00:45
that's that's something I miss and I
- 1:00:47
hope I hope it comes back and I hope
- 1:00:49
more people get to make comedies and and
- 1:00:51
um that we get that back cuz it's so
- 1:00:53
much better to be in a group and laugh.
- 1:00:55
You know, if you go to a live show, you
- 1:00:57
know, if you go to a live show at like a
- 1:00:59
UCB or standup tour, there's so many
- 1:01:01
people there and you don't realize how
- 1:01:03
much the other people that experience is
- 1:01:05
part of it. Like if you come see me do
- 1:01:07
stand up at a theater, it's oh man
- 1:01:08
we're having a great time. But I just
- 1:01:10
came to your house and just started
- 1:01:11
doing standup and you're sitting by
- 1:01:13
yourself. That's
- 1:01:14
>> I'd, be, like,, how, did, you, get, into, my
- 1:01:15
house?
- 1:01:16
>> This, is, not, a, good, experience., This, is
- 1:01:18
But that to me is like the, you know
- 1:01:19
streaming a movie and being on your
- 1:01:21
phone at the same time is like not the
- 1:01:23
same thing. I know. It's back to the
- 1:01:25
phone. It's back to the phone. And the
- 1:01:27
the theater is still the only place
- 1:01:29
where you're not allowed to be on your
- 1:01:30
phone.
- 1:01:30
>> I, love, going, to, the, movie, theater., It's
- 1:01:32
so fun.
- 1:01:32
>> I'm, so, happy, that, you, came,
- 1:01:34
>> Z., I, I, I, got, to, tell, you,, I, I, you, know,
- 1:01:36
when whenever uh I I was like, "Okay, we
- 1:01:39
got to do this press tour for the
- 1:01:40
movie." I was like "Oh, well, I know
- 1:01:42
one thing I'll be looking forward to
- 1:01:43
very much." And that was this and spend
- 1:01:45
time with you.
- 1:01:46
>> Same.
- 1:01:46
>> Um, it's, it's, it's, always, a, pleasure, when
- 1:01:49
we get to see each other. And uh thank
- 1:01:50
you for having me.
- 1:01:51
>> Turkey, sandwich., I'm, so, happy, that, you
- 1:01:52
came.
- 1:01:53
>> Hold, on, one, second.
- 1:01:56
Hey, Watson. Yeah. Yeah. I'm just
- 1:01:58
finishing up the pod. Um, okay. I'll see
- 1:02:02
you there.
- 1:02:03
>> What?
- 1:02:04
>> How, do, they, know, what?
- 1:02:05
>> No,, I, haven't, seen, Archie, and, Abel, in, a
- 1:02:07
long time. What?
- 1:02:08
>> I, don't, know., I, think, I, think, they're, in
- 1:02:09
their, 20s., All right., Take, care,, Watson.
- 1:02:12
Bye.
- 1:02:16
>> Thank, you,, Aziz., Sorry,, for, coming, by, um
- 1:02:19
and hanging. It was so great to see you
- 1:02:21
and to go down memory lane and um talk
- 1:02:23
about all the good things ahead. And now

how bad it is for us. And look, I agree
- 1:03:04
but my best friend gives me a lot of
- 1:03:07
things. It helps me track my other
- 1:03:10
friends and send them creepy texts like
- 1:03:13
"Uh, I see that you're at the airport.
- 1:03:16
Have a good flight." My phone lets me
- 1:03:19
buy things by just going beep just sweep
- 1:03:24
swiping it across a thing and you don't
- 1:03:26
even, know., You, don't even, have, to, take
- 1:03:27
out your credit card. My phone um it
- 1:03:31
just tells me about all the awful news
- 1:03:32
that's happening minute by minute all
- 1:03:34
over the world. And if I missed it, it
- 1:03:37
pops up to remind me. So just take it
- 1:03:40
easy on my phone, okay? It's my best
- 1:03:41

really good. Hey
